ok. i’m...headed to walt disney world later today for a few days, and i will not be bringing my laptop so i will be entirely mobile. i’d love to do some disco stuff if anyone’s interested? and i’m going to try right now to go through and crank out a few more headcanon posts to throw into a queue for my muses, focusing on the ocs because i know it’s hard to interact with ocs when you don’t know a lot about them. but i did put out a BUNCH of stuff so far this morning? and ask anyone who has ever written with me- i’m flexible as fuck about my kids. even my canon muses, i’m delighted to change their names to interact with other versions of themselves and i’m a serious lover of twin aus.

a few warren/bennett headcanons-

bella was 19 when she was married to leo. they honeymooned for a full two months- sailing to europe, a tour there, and then back. he spent most of the trip cranky and drunk and displeased with his bride. she came back from europe with crucifixes from almost every country they visited as though it might save her soul from the things her husband liked to do in the bedroom. she is not catholic- she’s lutheran. she bought crucifixes anyway.

bella frequently gets involved in charity works- volunteering as a nurse in a local hospital that caters to the poor and downtrodden, knitting scarves for orphans in canada, packing up grains and non-perishable foods for the ‘starving heathens’ in africa. (please don’t judge her, she is very white and it was 1899.). leo often suggests that she does these things to be closer to other men. and then tries to blackmail her with threats of exposing entirely non-existent affairs.

leo has an illegitimate, 17 year old daughter named ophelia lewis, who lives in brooklyn. her mother was a parlor maid formerly employed in the warren home, who was let go when she was found to be pregnant. moira lewis, who has now passed, raised her daughter as best she could, but lia, who spent her youth selling newspapers, can’t read, and is not one of the brooklyn girls who has a good reputation. she’s ingvar’s on-again-off-again girlfriend. and is a lot of other guy’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, as well. if leo DID know about her, the most he’d do is get her washed off, stuffed into a nice dress, and marry her to one of his friends to cement a business deal, regardless of how she’d be treated and with zero regard for her overall well being or education.

(eventually i might add lia to the mix too. fc is amanda seyfried. she’s a riot and in any instance where she DOES end up in leo’s household, she’s cheerfully doing EVERYTHING he did with the staff at her age, only behind his back, and with consent between herself and whoever is interested in playing. AND she does it all with a grin.)

ash is VERY good friends with seamus fitzgerald. (see the previous conlon family headcanon post for who seamus is.)  the two go basically pub crawling all the time. and seamus is very adept at keeping ash more or less in line. because ash can be exceedingly cruel, verbally. it’s nicely balanced- if nice is the word- with seamus’ physical cruelty. the two of them can do a lot of damage.

leo’s abuse of cocaine, alcohol and occasionally opium have stripped him of really ever functionally having any more children. bella, however, ends up bearing the brunt of this, and the suggestion is that it is, of course, her failure. this is actually a cause of a great deal of distress for bella, and she is often found praying for children, because to her mind, once she’s given leo at least a son and perhaps also a daughter, he’ll leave her the hell alone. truth is, bella is perfectly able to bear children. and in some rare, miracle instance, she might yet do so. under leo’s nose. while internally tormenting herself for her sins.

leo has two bffs he likes to party with. patrick morris and joseph williams. (because i need you to have a visual, pat’s fc is martin freeman and joe’s fc is rupert penry-jones.) and while ash and his little irish thug friend might go to dive bars, these fellas go to just a shade above that, socially. they are raucous and obnoxious- and joe and leo are the worst- pat can, at least, be relied upon to be worried what his wife might think if she ever found out. joe, in his own words, is blessedly a bachelor.

some sullivan family headcanons-

jack (franky, to anyone who knew him as a kid, like goldie. see this fanfic set) always wore a cowboy hat, ever since he was little. and the nickname cowboy came along with him from a very early age.

his father, francis sr, had a younger brother, john sullivan, whose wife left him when their daughter was only 2. fiona sullivan- known as rosie- is about a year older than jack, and has spent most of her teenage years in and out of the girl’s house of refuge for theft. she’s a reasonably skilled con artist, an excellent pickpocket, and an all around horrible influence. rosie was also childhood friends casually of goldie.

(at some later point, rosie may be added to the blog, but she’s a particularly difficult muse because i once let her be completely psychologically destroyed, and have never backtracked to pick those pieces up. her fc is alison sudol- but only when she has red hair. none of the hp nonsense which isn’t real and never happened anyway.)

francis sr was arrested, charged and convicted of crimes he didn’t actually commit by an angry neighbor. his wife and son fled the neighborhood, but were tracked down. ada sullivan, who was already sickly at this point- likely tuburcolosis- was beaten. if jack had been home, he likely would have been, too. but as it was, ada was fragile enough that the beating ultimately was too much for her body to handle. she held on until jack came home. from that point forward, jack was alone.

francis sr knew medda because he was a carpenter, and had done significant work on irving hall for her. it was actually her giving him work that consistently kept his head above the water, financially. they became friends over the years, and he often brought little jack to the theatre when he was working there. medda took a shine to the boy almost right away.

rosie calls jack, to his face and to this day, ‘franky-wanky-puddin-pie’. he calls HER ‘rosie-posie-i-ain’t-got-money-for-you-to-borrow’.

there IS a long lost elder sullivan sister. her name was maud, and no one knows where she is or what she’s doing. the answer is that she married wealthy in toronto, and when she does die, both her nephew and niece will inherit her husband’s estate and fortune, as they were childless, he had no family, and had already left it to her when he passed.

conlon family headcanons-

bridget and patrick- pat- conlon were married approx two months, and she was barely a month and a half pregnant with her first child when pat first cheated on her. he was a serial philanderer, which was ultimately his downfall.

ma conlon’s mother was irish, but her father was russian. she has family in county westmeath, near mullingar, and in dublin, and family in moscow. there are elements of her family who are not... ahem, in business that are above board, lets say.

pat has very little contact with his family back in the old country, but they’re from the area around kilkenny. he does have three older brothers, and two younger, and everything he managed to scrape together for himself and his family was done BY himself- with the assistance of one of the local saloon owners/politicans, deagland fitzgerald. deagland’s youngest brother, seamus, is a friend/mentor to spot, and a mid-level member of the fitzgerald gang, who run rackets from gun running to drug importing, to nominal ownership of several businesses where the company of women can be obtained for a price, including the dancing dove.

that said, while spot does enjoy the company of the ladies (and as long as nobody finds out, the gents) who seem to find him alluring, he does have a favorite at the above mentioned establishment- trixie. (trixie thinks she’s in love with him. he likes that she looks innocent enough that he can still feel like he’s corrupting her.)

mel loves her laudanum. it was first proscribed when she was a young teenager and had very bad cramping for a bit. when her mother tried to stop her from taking it, she found other ways to get her hands on it. easy enough, where they live.

when spot was about 15 and mel just turned 14, a woman approached pat conlon in the street with a 12 year old girl in tow. her name was mariella reuda, and the girl, consuela reuda was her daughter by pat. she’d been shipped home to mexico by her brothers when they found her pregnant, her daughter given to a cousin to raise, but mariella had stolen her when little ella was about 6, and hauled them both first to california, and then slowly across the country, back to new york, convinced that if she could just tell pat that she’d been pregnant, and had brought his daughter to him, that he would leave the “bitch he’d married” and marry her instead. that’s absolutely not what happened. pat laughed at her, and told her he couldn’t even remember her. mariella shot him dead between the eyes with a derringer whose bullet never managed to leave his skull after entering, knocking around and leaving him still breathing but clearly not alive. mikey- the eldest conlon-, ing, spot, and mel were all there, and mel’s screaming brought almost everyone in a three block radius to see what the hell was happening. bridget was at home with the twins, pregnant with her last child. mariella was arrested without resisting, after she shot pat again in the groin, the blood loss from which is what actually killed him. she was hung about a year later. little ella was left to an orphanage, but she ran away fairly quickly. even ma conlon’s big heart couldn’t see big enough to take the girl in. she’s a little furious shadow that will some day cause spot a lot of trouble.

...and now i want to dig up my absolutely ancient newsies fanfic, like the one where my oc and my at-the-time bff’s oc decided that jack and spot were too controlling as boyfriends, and chained them up in a basement and starved and tortured them before killing them, robbing medda, and fleeing to chicago.

i feel like we were 14 when we wrote this...i should go look for it...

we also had a whole thing where medda dreamed up grease in 1900, and it was about wagon racing...

y’all there was a time when i actually had printed out maps of 1901 manhattan, brooklyn, queens, and the bronx. because even then, no one gave a shit about staten island.

and before i launch into an awkward info dump about the segments of the city that actually existed in 1899- for example? there was no little italy, OR any real, cohesive chinatown, thank you very much, it was ALL little germany. do you know when that stopped being a thing? when 400+ members of that neighborhood died on the same steamship outing on the river in 1904. it was heavily jewish. and buttressed the financial area of lower manhattan, which is where the lodging house shown in the film is located, given it’s proximity to both irving hall- a real location- and the statue of horace greely in the beginning of the film, and therefore it makes sense that david and les (AND SARAH) would have been living in little germany. also...no. stopping right here. i promised no awkward info dump.
