Alex Turner and the casual racism/ignorance that plagues the white rich educated itellectuals
I’ll start with a disclaimer, I am a huge Arctic Monkeys fan, I love Alex Turner with all my heart, or loved, because lately as I’m no longer a teenager I’ve noticed things about the celebrities I admire that I’m critic of. This is not a hate or “drag” post but simply some truths that as a brown latina I feel to need to draw attention to. In fact, if most people in this fandom weren’t so fond of ignoring and overlooking this kind of shit I wouldn’t have to make this post in the first place.
(Yes, the quote on the title is very out of context but we’ll get to that)
⠀
In case you don’t know what the 2011 riots in England were about, here it is:
This is what Mark Duggan looked like:
Got it, right? Black dude, police officer, racism. Now let’s go on with it.
Alex Turner, white male born and raised in the middle class, well read, studied in philosophy, comdemns the violence present on riots.
⠀
First of all, I doubt Alex ever went to a political manisfestation in his life, much less one lead by black people, here is the thing: those pretty little signs, flower crowns, songs of peace is bullshit. Black people are constantly speaking about racism but no one listens to them, so when a black person dies because of it, they loose their cool, they go out in the streets and they break stuff because it’s the only way to make themselves heard and seen.
⠀
Someone should tell Alex that during the 80’s riots there were probably people saying that they were being too radical, and that in the US during the Civil Rights Movement it was much more “about the politics”.
⠀
After all
It goes on
See, here he questions the media and how it portraits the events. He understands that there is something behind all that breaking and destruction and that if you’re gonna dismiss those people as degenerates you should at least question why they became degenerates in the first place.
⠀
Yet, he finishes without conclusion, looking at the situation from above without taking a side, probably because he thinks that both sides are wrong and right.
⠀
The thing is, if you perceive the response violence of people who have been victim of discrimination for 5 centuries equal to the gratuitous violence of someone abusing their position of power and privilege, you’ve picked a side already.
⠀
It’s safe to say that Alex is a decent person, I don’t think he looks at Trump and sees anything more than a fucking idiot, he voted for the UK to remain in the European Union, yet, if he has it in himself to be with, live and love someone who thinks like this:
It speaks volumes. He was with this woman for 3 years, they clearly talked about politics since his first ever attempt to make a political statement (lmao) in his songs was related to her. She too was someone who criticized Trump, who posed as a progressist, politicized woman.
⠀
Regarless of all formal intellectual knowledge, Alex Turner still is extremely ignorant when it comes to racial issues and doesn’t seem to have any interest in learning about other people’s reality. Unfortunately, this kind of obliviousness is the base of the racism pyramid, and ignorance and omission is what allows the existence of people who are openly hateful towards one’s race or ethnicity.
⠀
You don’t need any kind of formal/academic education to have political consciousness and having the former will not guarantee you the latter.
