below the cut is an old note i just came across from ~6 years ago. a lot has changed since then, for better & for worse, but i felt like sharing it with y'all.
for a while i wanted to be a writer or an essayist; to put my way-too-many hours of reading old thinker's notes to good use and maybe help someone else along the way... but it can't do much good if a "finalized" thing is just kicking around in my notebook haha
someday i'll probably format this and write it by hand but for now this is enough, at least to me
"for the times" by me
i'm ready to find a place to live.
i'm ready to find a career i have a passion for.
i'm ready to say goodbye to the shores i've known.
i'm ready for autumn to come.
i'm ready for another cup of coffee.
i'm ready for the times to get better.
am i actually ready?
am i prepared for things to get better?
am i watching for the sun to rise?
am i taking the time to rest?
am i listening to my own thoughts, keeping them in check?
am i willing to accept the better times?
or do i want to wallow in my misery?
do i want to sit back and do nothing?
do i want to tune out anything pushing me forward?
do i want the clouds to fill the sky?
do i want the day to pass by idly?
do i avoid what makes my life better?
to live a life, to see a world like no other, to learn and grow beyond myself, to improve another life, to leave a record for future sojourners, and to ever watch the horizon.
that is the purpose of my writing.
to accomplish those lofty goals i have to be ready:
ready for profit and loss
ready for joy and sorrow
ready for growth and stagnation
ready to work for every step forward
ready to struggle with my self more than any other
ready to accept help
ready to love
ready to let go of things i know
ready to move on
i have to be ready for the times to get better, not just tired of how things are.

as with any technological advancement, Al should be used as a stepping stool for people who are interested/ struggling/learning/branching out artistically so that they can find a starting point; it shouldn't replace the act of doing but it should allow more people to get started!
i have seen people take up photography because they are slow at painting but want to paint a scene accurately, i know people who have used a pencil sketches to ink digitally to watercolor by hand process cause they hate inking with a pen but love the rest, authors who would never dream of writing by hand because of how quickly they can type, musicians who compose with digital samples so they can write music for instruments they can't play, and i took up calligraphy as a way to make a digital font to type with but have found so much enjoyment in the analog art that i may never make the font (long story made really short, but i thought i wanted to be an author/essayist and wanted to have it look like my actual writing on my own site or in "special printings" lol)
i'm against people losing their livelihood at the hands of conglomerates, tech bros, and greedy/jealous bullshit, but i'm glad i got to chat with an art student (college age) who does fantastic work both digitally & physically and hear his opinions about Al cause it helped show me the perspective of someone who doesn't yet have an art job but was studying to get one during all this, and it boiled down to "use it to visualize something and either pay an artist to make it or do it yourself"

if you go the route of pilot parallel pens i have had good luck with my inks from "dominant industry" for flow rate & color accuracy, and plan to buy more with my next supply order; i haven't used any of the ones that have a shimmer/glitter added but that's just a personal aversion haha
the best practice advice i have is to find a style you like and just write an A4 sheet of various notes "everyday" — journal if that's your thing, copy down a page of the book you're reading, or do what i did and narrate your train of thought till the page is full. the big goal is not just to try copying a hand that you like but to keep the pen, ink, and paper in contact as close to every day as you can, you want the equipment to feel comfortable in your hand and that just cones with time. and i always recommend spending time in your local library looking through typography, calligraphy, engravings, and the like to keep adding to your personal knowledge base.
and best of luck! i've had a lot of fun learning calligraphy and it's even been useful with my other hobbies too, stick with it and you'll gain an appreciation for your own handwriting if nothing else
Hi, sorry to bother you (and also sorry if the submissions aren't meant for stuff like this, I'm still learning to navigate this place). I just wanted to say that I love your calligraphy and your account, and I just wanted to ask, if you have the time: if I want to get into calligraphy, where would you suggest to start? What are some tools/pens you recommend, your favourite inks, what exercises/practice methods do you suggest, stuff like that. Thank you so much for any advice!
-------
honestly i just kinda picked up a speedball kit and started copying fonts off of google images so idk how much that'd help
but when I post this i KNOW a huge amount of pen and ink enthusiasts will be in the notes rarin' to help!
