hi! i had a question about Derry girls and it's a bit annoyingish. in the last episode what are Erin and Michelle arguing about? i couldn't find a subtitled version in my area and im not a native English speaker so its a bit difficult for me to understand. thanks for your time if you choose to answer. :)

This might be more than you need, but here it goes:

So, one of the biggest issues a lot of people had with the Good Friday Agreement, and which they mention a bunch in the episode, was the release of paramilitary prisoners. These were people that were convicted of politically motivated crimes, but were mostly not a part of an official military or police force.

In the episode we find out that Michelle's brother, Niall, is one of these prisoners. The conflict between Erin and Michelle starts at the candy shop when Michelle says that she's not getting her hopes up about the vote being in favor and his release as a result. 

Erin doesn't believe that he should be released, because politically motivated or not, he killed someone. Michelle says that he didn't mean to kill anyone, but Erin doesn't think intent matters when you kill someone. We never find out the extent of what happened with Niall.

We find out at Jenny's party that Michelle is also actually extremely conflicted about her brother as well. Her mother won't let her visit him. And the man Niall killed had a teenage son. Michelle acknowledges that there really isn't an answer to everything that's happened - here it seems more like she's talking about the whole 38 years of the conflict, not just the girl's fight.

It's that which prompts the conversation with her grandfather and that conversation also acknowledges there's no guaranteed right answer, there's just hope.

Another example: Кошек много не бывает. There is no such thing as too many cats.

On a less funny note, the breast clinic was filled with really super lovely people, but the changing room had a "coping with an unexpected divorce" pamphlet in it that made my stomach drop.

I know that famed statistic about cis men who leave their wives after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis is supposedly overblown, but seeing that still made me need to sit down and breathe for a bit.

I think a lot about who I am to other people in the world–particular who I am to strangers as a mere concept in their lives.

Today this woman called our information desk and said, “my son’s band is playing tonight. I want to come see him, but he never answers his phone…..I want to be there. Have you heard anything about his band?”

And I felt so bad for this lady but I’m not in the music scene around here so I had to tell her no, sorry.

Five hours later, I’m hiking and run into a group of guys setting up for some outdoor performance, and as I watch them unload the drums it hits me.

“Hey,” I said, “are y’all in a band?”

They said yeah and smiled and I told them “one of your moms called today. She wants to watch you play, but she can’t get a hold of you. Call your mom.”

And they all pulled out their phones and started discussing whose mom it probably was as they presumably dialed their own.

And now, unless we meet again and recognize each other, that’s who I’ll be forever to those guys–some mysterious courier for mom-messages who came out of the woods and told them their mom called.

I didn’t even tell them why their mom called me. Who am I to their mom?? Nobody even asked. They just took my word for it and called their mothers.

First you procrastinate on the task because it is not a big enough deal to get done urgently. Then you procrastinate on the task because it has become such a big deal that doing it is overwhelming. Being a young adult is so strange. You enter a coffee shop. The 20 year old girl waiting behind you cried all night because she just came to a new city for university and she feels so alone. That 27 year old guy over there works a job he is overqualified for, he lives with his parents and wants to move out but doesn't know what to do about it. That one 24 year old dude already has a car, a house, and a job waiting for him once he graduates thanks to his dad's connections. The 26 year old barista couldn't complete his higher education because he has to work and take care of his family. The 28 year old girl sitting next to you has no friends to go out with so she is texting her mother. That couple (both 25 years old) are married and the girl is pregnant. The 29 year old writing something on her laptop has realized that she chose the wrong major so she is trying to start all over. We are not alone in this, but we are actually so alone. Do you feel me
