Italy has been in total lockdown for over two months. The country’s museums were closed and deserted.⁠ ⁠ Italy has the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world, but tourism has come to a complete and painful halt. What do these museums look like devoid of visitors? How do the artworks fare without those that appreciate them? Thanks to the COVID-19 Visual Project, an initiative by Cortona On The Move festival, in partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo, we’ve had the unique opportunity to be the only visitors allowed in some of the most iconic museums in Italy. We have tried to pull them out of the darkness and reinvent them through light. We call this project Locked in Beauty. It's been published in National Geographic and is on exhibit at the festival until the end of September. - A Knight At the Crossroads - Viktor Vasnetsov The artist depicts the hero in a moment of reflection, before a stone inscribed with the following words: “If you go straight ahead, there will be no life; there is no way forward for he who travels past, walks past or flies past.” Victor Vasnetsov interprets the legend as a real event, depicting the knight in ethnographically and historically authentic armour and in a natural landscape setting. The artist employs literary devices to contrast the forces of lightness and darkness — the lucid figure of the knight on the white horse, the ominous black raven on the stone, the skull and bones scattered across the steppe. In the year 1865 Mr. Gardner Brewer, who at that time resided at 29 Beacon street, Boston, asked M. le Chevalier Scipione Tadolini, a famous Roman sculptor, a pupil of the great Canova. to model an allegorical figure of St. Michael overcoming Satan. Immediately Tadolini set to work to think on his subject; having formed his conception, he procured a single block of the finest Carrara marble and began his masterpiece. In the meantime, while his skilled artists assisted him, he modeled an imposing pedestal which is in itself a work of art. Ambassador's (Jordan) Staircase at the Winter Palace / Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Winter Palace was declared part of the State Hermitage Museum on 17 October 1917. Although initial Bolshevik policy was to remove all Imperial symbols from the palace and use the premises as a museum of the Revolution, the restoration project of the 1940s and 1950s, which followed further extensive damage to the building during the Siege of Leningrad, saw the beginning of an ongoing process to return the Imperial splendor of many of the palace's rooms. The State Rooms of the Winter Palace now form one of the most popular sections of the Hermitage, and are essential viewing for all visitors to St. Petersburg. https://ift.tt/30kWvur

- The Hand of God - Yongsung Kim Korean painter Yongsung Kim thinks the art world could use a little inspiration—so he paints Him. Kim became a Christian in middle school and a cartoonist as a young adult. When he was 20, he had a dream that God asked him, “What are you doing with the gifts I’ve given you?” From there he felt compelled to paint an image of Christ he hadn’t seen very often. “So many depictions of Christ are already dark and somber,” he tells The Creators Project earnestly. “I want my paintings to share some of the light and hope that Jesus offers.” A simple message, but a sincere one. https://ift.tt/3aVyLiL
