1) You should assume good faith (good intentions, the most flattering interpretation of their speech) when taking with people, 2) it is normal to do so unless you have a serious, ongoing reason as to not do so, and 3) if you do not regularly approach people, especially strangers, in good faith during discussions, then that is a sign of something wildly unhealthy within your psyche.
4) You do have options to change how you think, 5) it will require work to train your brain to approach people sincerely and 6) you may have to stop hanging out in spaces that are toxic or destructive.
But, 7) by tempering your mind, 8) taking accountability for how your words harm others and 9) not hanging out in places that give you an addicting, self-righteous, sense of anger, 10) you can move towards having meaningful, adult, conversations, honestly and openly with others, 11) in such a way where social safety and kindness allows you to be intellectually curious, exploratory, and to grow.

i feel like it must mean something that the only people who say their own names, first and last, are fitzjames, goodsir, hickey, and irving. also think it must be significant that, in goodsir’s and irving’s cases, it’s because they’re introducing themselves to someone– representing themselves, making themselves familiar to a stranger– but not in fitzjames’ or hickey’s. when hickey says “cornelius hickey,” it’s
in ep 3, during his conversation with billy; “cornelius hickey is a devious seducer.”
in ep 7, during the flashback to his arrival on terror; “cornelius hickey, caulker’s mate.”
in ep 10, during his monologue on the boat; “a man called cornelius hickey told me this expedition was a year in the polar sea and then out the other side.”
and when fitzjames says his own name, it’s during the cairn walk with crozier; “james fitzjames, like a bad pun.”
though goodsir and irving say their own first and last names, they do it while gesturing to themselves, indicating that that name is what they’re called. say harry goodsir and you mean the assistant surgeon trying to make british food seem palatable; say john irving and you mean the lieutenant who gave you his retractable spyglass.
in both hickey and fitzjames’ cases, there’s an issue of identity. both of them misrepresent themselves in some way, to the point where that misrepresentation was what allowed them their places on the expedition. to represent themselves truthfully would be to put something at risk. fitzjames admits his circumstances to crozier as an expression of trust and almost desperation for crozier to see him for everything he is. hickey’s admission only comes while he uses his audience as bait for the tuunbaq.
what i think is interesting is how they both make themselves characters of their stories. here’s a post about fitzjames’ tendency to do so. hickey’s positioning of himself is done more subtly, more through constructing his own character arc, which informs his actions and his perception of his actions. the thing is that conceiving of yourself as a character in a story requires you to surveil yourself, to think of yourself in the third person. other people in the fandom have noted that hickey has the habit of not referring to himself while talking to others, i.e. “help a mate up,” and “let a man in.” similarly, during the cairn walk, fitzjames says his name as a commentary on his name itself– “like a bad pun.”
cornelius hickey isn’t just cornelius hickey, but the hand writing the words. james fitzjames isn’t just james fitzjames, but the people in the seats watching him perform. author, audience, and actor, just like crozier and jcr in the balcony watching themselves represented on stage.

i do usually find it silly to complain about slash shippers in general but one reason in particular is that so many of them are gonna go on to have gay sex with their rp partner once they figure some shit out

flipping the tables at the temple is a crucial part of the run, but obviously every npc in the area will aggro on you as soon as you do it, which is a problem because the crucifixion exploit only works on a pacifist run. that's why we picked up those cords from the leatherworker earlier in the chapter. we can craft those into a whip and drive out the merchants, as long as we don't accidentally kill one of them. this is the only weapon in the game that doesn't proc the "violence" effect due to an oversight in the code, so this will essentially allow us to complete the tableflip glitch without breaking our pacifist run. once every table is flipped, the physics engine won't know how to handle it and some key values will be altered that will later allow us to clip through golgotha directly into hell-

It’s going to be really cool when Carmy comes out of the freezer with ice powers to save Chicago in the new season of the bear that was my favorite arc from the manga
