what i need people to understand about my dark angel derangement is that yes, its only two seasons but its two 21 episode seasons. also its set in 2019-2020 and everyone is walking around in low rise bc theyre ahead of the trends. the setting is a post apocalyptic society where travel has become highly restricted and class division is dialled to the extreme. the main cast features genetically modified individuals who experienced trauma and brainwashing from a young age. the rest of the main cast is a wheelchair/bionic leg brace using tech genius and a proud black lesbian. the main character is a mixed race woman who is strong but allowed to have struggles, both romantic and in relation to her plot about being a freakin superhero while also having ptsd. everyone is morally grey because government agencies and corporations are the antagonists. oh, and the soundtrack is killer. some elements seem cringey, but it is at all times a fun, interesting, captivating tv show that works perfectly in the medium.

I don't know how to explain it, but star trek is a genre as well as a franchise.
It's contained within the science fiction genre and broadly overlaps with space opera, but, not every space opera is also an example of the 'star trek' genre. Star Wars, for example, is not star trek. Foundation is not star trek. The Expanse is not star trek.
But Babylon 5? Babylon 5 is an example of the star trek genre. The Orville is definitely star trek. Farscape? Star trek. You don't even really need to go to space; I think both Sea Quest and Sliders count as star trek, and they're set underwater and in parallel universes, respectively. If it was genre tv in the 90s (and it's not Buffy), it's probably Star Trek.
Other media too. Galaxy Quest? Star trek (obviously). Mass Effect? Clearly star trek. The novel Redshirts by John Scalzi? Do I even need to say it?

While *you* were waiting around for an owl to invite you to a transphobic wizard school, *I* was loitering around abandoned construction sites waiting for a shape-shifting alien to induct me into a secret war. We're not the same.

Ok so I agree that they were not intimidating at all and that the Borg were a much better series villain but I think it’s hilarious that the Ferengi were initially intended to be the main villain of the Next Generation because it’s extremely in character of Star Trek to just have the big bad be Capitalism™

imagine the most meanspirited, unlikeable, rude, bitter, self centered, negative person you can think of. not a rapist, not a murderer, not an abuser. just a charmless, tactless, dyed in the wool asshole you wouldn't want to spend two seconds with. now assume they get sick, not with the flu, but with a long term, serious illness that limits their ability to provide for themself. a society in which that person is left to die alone because nobody likes them on a personal level is a failed society.

tbh any animorphs qdaptation that isnt a 90s period piece would be a disappointment. i cant confidently speak to how the brief period between the cold war and the war on terror affects the narrative of innocence lost, but beyond that its just such a pivotal part of the series to me.

animorphs covers were like Yaoo Uh Oh! im turning into a Silly Frog! and then you read the bookd and the transformations were all described like. my skin stretched thin around my bones. my ribcage collapsed in on itself and my eyes split open as i felt my organs liquidate inside my body. then i was a frog, small and vulnerable, with a frogs terror instinct screaming inside my head to get in. a puddle

I feel like a good shorthand for a lot of economics arguments is "if you want people to work minimum wage jobs in your city, you need to allow minimum wage apartments for them to live in."
"These jobs are just for teenagers on the weekends." Okay, so you'll use minimum wage services only on the weekends and after school. No McDonald's or Starbucks on your lunch break.
"They can get a roommate." For a one bedroom? A roommate for a one bedroom? Or a studio? Do you have a roommate to get a middle-wage apartment for your middle-wage job? No? Why should they?
"They can live farther from city center and just commute." Are there ways for them to commute that don't equate to that rent? Living in an outer borough might work in NYC, where public transport is a flat rate, but a city in Texas requires a car. Does the money saved in rent equal the money spent on the car loan, the insurance, the gas? Remember, if you want people to take the bus or a bike, the bus needs to be reliable and the bike lanes survivable.
If you want minimum wage workers to be around for you to rely on, then those minimum wage workers need a place to stay.
You either raise the minimum wage, or you drop the rent. There's only so long you can keep rents high and wages low before your workforce leaves for cheaper pastures.
"Nobody wants to work anymore" doesn't hold water if the reason nobody applies is because the commute is impossible at the wage you provide.
