no cause that moment when atreus comes back to kratos after asgard and he hugs him and at first kratos looks so shocked that atreus actually came back before he hugs him back and his eyes. look at his EYES. at his FACE. that's the look of a man ready to kill anyone who ever gets too near his child again. that's the face of a man ready to find whoever made his son so distraught as to hug him so tightly and kill them over and over and over again (which he does in the end). that's the face of a man ready to DIE before letting anyone even look at his boy wrong again. it just means a lot to me

Idk if my fave part so far of The Game Awards is Al Pacino randomly showing up or Bear McCreary having the time of his life with Hozier

Something Dude bros forget when claiming Kratos is "soft now"
The last game showed Kratos' brutality, roughness and aggression as very much a bad thing. It was a part of himself he needed to get under control so that he could be a better father to Atreus. And is also hugely is shaped from his own traumas.
The traits dude bros praise Kratos for have always been complicated. And Kratos has to take them and learn to use them in ways that is not only beneficial to Atreus and everyone around him, but is also healthier for himself. Coming to peace with them so he doesn't hurt his own son or pass them onto him.
By the new game he has friends. He is openly compassionate and more understanding. He is open about his love for arts and is more affectionate with Atreus in his own ways. And that's a good thing. He recognizes closing himself away isn't something he needs to do. He still has issues he's dealing with but he works on it.
Aggression for the sake of manly aggression is not what Kratos is and minimizing him to that is blatantly wrong and a demerit to his character

OMG I JUST NOTICED THE SWEETEST THING

Look at the difference between Mimir in gow 2018, and gow ragnarok
Besides his beard being longer, which is nice attention to detail, his beard is more well kept AND BRAIDED WITH LIL DECORATIONS
Obviously he cant do that himself, so Kratos, and/or Atreus did it for him, and thats so fucking sweet

i haven't mentioned this already but all the little mannerisms and habits atreus picked up from traveling with his dad. like, not just trying to open the chests in the same way kratos does, but also how he waits and motions with his head for the other person he's traveling with to go first, same when it comes to the rock climbing. it's so cute and such a small detail that i loved that they added in

the fact that this whole game kratos offered everyone mercy. he never wanted to harm freya no matter how much she wanted to harm him. he tried to offer hemidall mercy. he didn’t once question the fact that thrúd was an ally. he offered thor mercy.
like, this is the same kratos that poked poseidon’s eyes out with his BARE HANDS and cut hermes’ legs off without hesitation. atreus really rubbed off on him huh

The Bear Scene ™ has been in my head for weeks.
Kratos has spent the past 14+ years struggling to move past the tragedy in Greece and his guilt over killing his first wife and daughter, whose ashes he now wears on his skin. The whole reason why Kratos was so distant with Atreus was because he felt unworthy of his child’s love and admiration, being the monster he thought he was. Furthermore, it’s not so great a leap to understand that Kratos was scared of loving a child again. He’d lost one already. By distancing himself from Atreus, he could protect both himself and his boy.
But now, during Ragnarok, Kratos has allowed himself to love again, and in doing so, they are closer than ever. So when the bear that Kratos nearly kills transforms into his son, covered in blood and bruises – which Kratos inflicted – and not opening his eyes, I can only imagine the horror. The panic. The self hatred boiling in his gut. It’s happened again. I’ve killed my son.
It’s the risk Kratos has taken by finally drawing close to Atreus. It is his greatest fear come to life before his eyes. We know throughout the game that Atreus is Kratos’s whole world; he has said again and again that, if necessary, he would readily die so that Atreus could live.
So when Atreus finally opens his eyes, I can only imagine Kratos’s relief. To me, it’s heartwarming, in an odd way, seeing Kratos so earnestly care about his son. But it is an important scene because here is where we see Kratos’s motivation to remain put and not involve himself in another war. Because entering another war puts him at risk of becoming the God of War once again – vengeful, full of rage and hate, and lacking self control. Entering another war puts him at risk of falling back into his old ways. Old ways that might include familiar tragedies.
