I continue to love what they did with the husband. The more the drama proceeds, the clearer it becomes he did genuinely love her. Just not more than his life.

He is haunted by their happy past throughout her playing...

It's such an unusual choice to make the bad guy husband, the murderer, to have been genuinely in love with the FL - the flashbacks show her love wasn't deluded, he did love her back and was willing to sacrifice for her (like with the qin) - it actually shows she didn't have terrible judgment in people and I love that so much! It totally makes sense her being blindsided by betrayal and murder - because he did cherish her, he just didn't want to die over it. How was she to know, how was anyone to know how this dude would react in an extreme situation where the choice of living was between him and her? This isn't something you can easily test for and to be fair, not something that ever comes up in most relationships anyway, not even in Ye Olde Times. And it makes her rage and betrayal and hurt so much more raw and immediate. There was something beautiful there once that got destroyed, not that it was always ruins.
It's also an interesting choice that he's the one who is responsible for her winning as he casts the decisive vote - he WANTS to be fair to someone if it doesn't cost him his life and he views it as some sort of twisted safe expiation to his dead wife - helping Jiang Li is like helping his dead wife but without actually risking his neck doing so. Does it expiate anything? Not one iota. But it makes him fascinatingly human, not just a bland 2-D antagonist to defeat by rote.

Got to say the actor playing the husband is killing in the role. If WXY wasn't so on fire as Duke Su, there'd be a danger the husband would steal the show among the male characters. But as is, we have a delicious buffet instead.

Oh, it's so satisfying and sad to watch her husband lose his mind. On one hand, yeah, he tried to kill female lead and utterly broke her with his betrayal. I'm livid. But watching him be yanked around by the psychopathic princess is terrifying, so I can see how one man can just disassociate and begin to lose himself.

The Double
Finished ep 9 last night. Here are some thoughts:
First, I watched the trailer. The Duke and Fangfei/Li both completely willing to be the other’s pawn? Working together to against their enemies? Paths converging? YES.
The Duke, bloodied on the battlefield with Fangfei/Li’s pendant between his teeth? The pendant that Fangfei/Li retrieved immediately upon her return to the capital, declaring that no one was worth the pendant leaving her again? THAT pendent? ABSOLUTELY YES. I cannot wait to find out how the Duke has it.
I love how the Duke is over the top and extra. I get the sense that very few people have ever matched him intellectually but Fangfei/Li does and that is why she intrigues and excites him. He’s also falling first because he noticed her in the street before and paid close attention to her “funeral” procession.
Being murdered by her husband has actually released Fangfei/Li in many ways. She loved him, but I think she gave up a lot to be with him. They had to beg to get married. It seems like she was not able to really show her intelligence. But despite being in the viper’s den, she free to be who she truly is. She’s not fallen for the Duke just yet but like him, he’s also the only one who can match her. She is intrigued by him.
Plus their chemistry is fire and they are absolutely insane. She bets his life with a poison spider and he lets her. I love them.
As for the murderous husband, I would feel sorry for him because the princess is crazy and awful but this is the prison he chose. So he can suffer. Also, at first I thought he was just burying her Fangfei somewhere pretty. But no, this is a place that had significant meaning to them. And I’m not clear is this happened or if it was part of Fangfei/Li’s poisoned dream but this fucker actually played the flute while waiting for her to wake up in the grave he threw her in. He could have just buried her while she was unconscious but her WAITED for her to wake up. So she knew everything that was happening. Yes. He must suffer.

im rly enjoying the revenge form here like the way fang fei is haunting her in laws as a living ghost specifically her husband who actually feels extreme guilt on top of fear bc he actually did love her and they both have to relive his betrayal and her death everytime they meet but they have to mask that with forced smiles and politeness im eating this all up
