here's my best Fanfic Writing Advice:

before you post the story think of one or two reasons people might not like it. these can be specific ("i know people don't like this blorbo to have that kink") or more general ("it's a bit dark") but you need at least one "why the fandom will hate this" reason in your head before posting the fic.

then when the fic does not "do numbers" tell yourself that's the reason. it's nothing you did, it's just that the pairing splits up by the end. you are not at fault, people are chicken about clicking the 'kudos' button on e-rated works. etc etc. relax. calm down. this is a them problem not a you problem.
