And just like that we're back to days spent around the house and daily walks. I'd just started to get into a rhythm of classes and coffee dates when we went into lockdown and now it feels a lot like those first few weeks after R was born. . I'm trying to embrace this new simpler life. We're lucky to have a garden where we can enjoy the spring sunshine and the good weather has meant we can take long walks every day. I'm also appreciating the things we have - less consumerism is always good. . Everything feels uncertain at the moment but I'm trying to embrace the positives. This morning was cold, clear and frosty so with R snuggled up in the sling (and cosy under my amazing @seraphinematernity coat) and armed with coffee I took a walk along the canal in the early morning sunshine. I've been reading @linneadunne 's beautiful book Good Mornings and thinking about how I might start a gentle morning ritual now that R and I have a bit more of a rhythm to our mornings. 1 March 2019 was the day I found out I was pregnant with R. It was a Friday and I was working from home and getting ready to go on a friend's hen do the next day (and apparently bluffed through the not drinking thing quite well). It marked the start of a complete change to our lives. . We've got through the ups and downs of pregnancy, survived those first few weeks with a newborn and the wonderful but tiring fourth trimester and now at four months are watching this little beauty as she fills with wonder discovering the world. . I've been a little quiet on here the last few weeks as we've pretty much spent every day hiding indoors and out of the terrible weather. If you watch my stories you'll know that we live in a little village just above Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge. Even though we live far up from the river we've had sandbags out the last two weekends to divert the water pouring down from the moors behind our house. Seeing first hand homes and businesses flooding has been awful, but it's been incredible how the community has pulled together. Whilst the weather doesn't look to be improving much, we took a much needed trip out today to meet with friends for coffee. It's amazing how quickly our babies are growing! R is now grabbing everything she can get her little hands on, her eyes taking in as much as she can and even starting to roll (which took us all by surprise). What a foggy frosty start to the day. Despite the cold we headed out and managed to go on our first solo trip to Manchester on the train. It's the first time I've been to Manchester since I packed up my desk and started mat leave back in October so it felt strange walking to the office, this time with a pram and little R gazing up at me. . I felt so guilty that I spent a lot of the day catching up with colleagues rather than giving R my full attention. But it was also nice to start thinking about work things as well. I wouldn't change this scar for the world. I never wanted a c-section. But I based my choices on what would be safest for my baby. Perhaps if we'd had more time we would have considered vaginal breech birth but my labour was very fast - when I was admitted to the labour ward I was a category 3 c-section but got bumped to a category 2 after dilating 5cm in just over 2 hours. This baby was not going to wait for the morning. The night after my c-section felt like the longest night of my life. I had blood pressure checks every hour, had to side feed R and needed help turning over as the spinal block wore off. By the time dawn arrived I'd had very little sleep and no food, plus having lost a fair amount of blood during surgery so unsurprisingly I passed out several times after having a shower (taking the midwife helping me by surprise). Those first few days of recovery were hard - I'd had major surgery and was looking after this tiny human, adjusting to no sleep and breastfeeding. I had to give myself blood thinning injections, I had indigestion, I was sore and emotionally drained. But at the same time that time was a gift - there was no need to get up and do things. Instead I could simply snuggle up with my little girl. Recovery overall has been easier than I expected. I never imagined during the first 35 weeks of my pregnancy that my baby would be breech. Every check up with my midwife confirmed the baby was head down. I was low risk. Our birth plan was to use the pool at the birth centre with minimal pain relief. I'd been practising hypnobirthing and felt really positive and excited about giving birth. But hours after my 36 week appointment I started to suffer from really bad back pain. I started to worry about the baby's movements and phoned the maternity assessment centre (MAC). Hearing the heartbeat on the monitor was a huge relief but the midwives weren't certain that baby was head down and wanted to do a scan to confirm. So at about 11.30pm, feeling exhausted and emotional, I had the on-duty registrar deliver the news that our baby's head was quite comfortably nestled under my ribs. I was devastated. Suddenly instead of the beautiful water birth we had planned I was researching how to turn a baby and the relative risks of caesarean sections versus vaginal breech birth. I spent pretty much the whole of the next day in tears. I felt like something must be wrong with me and my baby. Everyone else's baby was able to get in the right position, why was I in the 3% of babies that are breech? I felt like I'd failed. I spent hours doing inversions, laying with my feet in the air and using ice packs and hot water bottles to encourage the baby to move. I was determined that the baby would turn. I was booked in for an external cephalic version (ECV) where the consultant attempted to manually turn the baby. I used up breathing to stay relaxed but baby only turned halfway. Birth plans were re-written. I wanted to give the baby as much opportunity as possible to turn so wanted to wait for spontaneous labour rather than having a scheduled c-section. In the end we had a very positive birth experience, but those weeks before were difficult. The feelings of disappointment and failure were hard to shake. But I had some amazing support from @hainsworth86, my family and online from @lucylucraft and @hellobaby_brighton. We've spent the last few days snuggled on the sofa watching films and eating toasted hot cross buns (no it isn't too early!). On Tuesday we woke to a snow filled sky and frost on the ground - not ideal weather for heading out with the sling so instead I lit the fire and we watched the changing weather from the windows. Wednesday was spent waiting for the new washing machine to arrive and working through piles of laundry once it was plumbed in. Something I'm learning on maternity leave is how to take things slow, and celebrate the little achievements - as a day spent at home will be filled with play and cuddles with R, watching her discovering the world. Today there was just enough of a gap in the stormy weather to walk part of the way to baby yoga. As someone who doesn't drive and lives in a tiny village at the top of a huge hill, I had a lot of worries about how me and R would get to classes. We bought our pram with bus journeys in mind but R is going through a phase of not liking being laid down in her pram (or the crib) so I've really embraced using the sling to get out and about. Going to classes with just the sling and the changing bag saves me from having to manoeuvre the pram on and off the bus and my fantastic @seraphinematernity coat keeps us both snug and dry. I'm not making any specific resolutions as it always seems they fall by the wayside. But I am making a commitment to do something active everyday. The problem with breastfeeding is that a lot of my day is spent sitting down (usually with snacks to hand). In December I made an effort to get out of the house every day - sometimes a trip to the shops, some days just a brief walk in the village.
