Your Joy Will Turn to Ashes, a Curse
This is a curse aimed at someone who has wronged the caster in a grievous manner, especially by committing abuse. The goal is to return the negativity and pain to the abuser. This is ideally done outside or in a well ventilated area, away from anything flammable.
(The quote is borrowed from George R.R. Martin’s A Clash of Kings, though that is the only outside element used in this working (I felt it was fitting — feel free to come up with your own words, of course.)
Materials:
dried stinging nettle
dried cloves
rose thorns
war water or storm water
pen and parchment paper (or brown paper)
fire-proof container, matches
photo of target (optional)
Write down the target’s name on the paper and, if you have a photo of them, place the photo on top of the paper. Fold it in half, then fold the ends of the paper to create a packet, leaving one side open.
Add the dry materials to the packet. As you do, focus on the wrong the target has done to you and/or others. If this is too painful to think about, just focus on who you wish to curse. Fold the mouth of the packet closed. Allow a few drops of the water to fall onto the packet.
Light the corner of the packet on fire, then immediately drop it into the fire-proof container. As it burns to ash, say the following:
A day will come When you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth. And you’ll know the debt is paid.
Scatter the ashes outside, away from your home.

The Seven Stings Hex
Tumblr media
This is a hex intended to provide long term irritation and discomfort to the target until they’ve learned a specific lesson.
Materials
- 7 white tealights
- 7 thorns (I use bougainvillia or rose but any will do)
- Vinegar
- Sea salt
- Small bottle
- Needle
- Target’s name on paper
Steps
1. Soak your thorns in vinegar for whatever amount of time you feel you need. I usually leave mine for a few hours
2. Line your seven candles up so that they are next to each other, you can have them in either a row or a circle, whichever you like!
3. Light all your candles and place a thorn in front of each. Picture the energies of each thorn and candle linking to one another.
4. Fold the piece of paper with your targets name so that it has three layers.
5. Needle in one hand and paper in the other, recite the following chant (I like to do another chant more specific to the situation before this one as well). As you speak it, pierce the paper with your needle.
“Mind, body, soul - my hex will take its toll.”
Place the paper and the needle in your bottle for later.
6. Next, repeat the following words. As you say each line, extinguish on of your candles and place its respective thorn into your bottle.
“Seven days of slight unease
Seven nights of restless sleep
Seven dawns of nagging guilt
Seven dusks of bad luck built
Seven days of karma coming
Seven days of endless running
Seven days of all you’ve earned
Until your lesson you have learned
But should the lesson stay unheeded
These seven days shall be repeated”
7. Throw a pinch of salt in the bottle. Meditate with the open bottle for awhile and focus on your intent, allow your energy to flow into it. When you’re ready, seal the bottle. You may use wax for this if you wish.
8. Leave the bottle in a cold, dark place to add to the discomfort. I left mine outside during a storm. Don’t forget to cleanse your space and yourself after performing a hex! Once you feel the bottle has done its work, burn its flammable contents and cleanse everything else.
I like to perform this hex at night on the evening of a new moon, and of course for any hexes or curses a stormy night is always best, however as always your intent is the main ingredient!

A Folk Witch Library
Tumblr media
Hidden like Viking gold under the landscape there is a rich body of nearly lost folkwitch tradition hiding in plain sight on the internet. Particularly in the 18th and 19th century antiquarians, folklorists and ethnologists documented the rural and occasionally urban folk beliefs of practically all of the UK and much of Europe. Organizations like the Folklore Society, founded in 1878, were created to help catalog and publish this body of collected ethnological data. A vast repository of a spectrum of witch and cunning craft practices.
Below are a list of links to various sources on the internet. The non Abramhamic roots of British folk traditions date from an era of Celtic settlers, and thus much of the spirit tradition concerns beings we now collectively call “fairies”, though their origins and nature differ greatly.
Books Available Online for free:
Folklore Society/Folk-Lore Journal:
Over 100 publications made by the Folk-Lore Society can be found on Archive.org. Unfortunately these are mostly unsorted, although they represent a massive amount of folkwitch information. Particularly in the realm of curses, hexes, salves, second sight, and boundary magic.
I will be launching a separate blog dedicated to delving into the contents of the Folklore Society’s publications in the next few weeks. In the meantime - Happy digging: Link to archive of FOLKLORE JOURNAL

Boveda Espiritual
So I have been receiving many messages regarding how does one correctly set up a Boveda Espiritual so I thought why not make a post about it?
The Boveda Espiritual is the shrine set up to worship the Egun and our ancestors. It is placed somewhere quiet in the house, preferably the not the room. These are the basic items that are needed to set it up, of course, there may be other items such as pictures, offerings and the list goes on.
Items Needed ~
A small table
A white cloth
A rosary
A bible
Incense
White candle
A crucifix
Florida water
7 or 9 clear glasses
Again, this list may vary depending what the Egun say.
7 or 9? All on you. 7 is the universal number and 9 is the number of the dead. When Divination is done, the spirits may tell you what specific number you have to use.
Locate a quiet place in your home where interruption is limited. Clean this area with Florida Water and light incense to purify the area. Place your table and the white cloth where you have decided to place the Boveda Espiritual. Out of the number of glasses you chose, one of them should be slightly larger than the rest.
This glass is known as dedication to God and is placed in the middle. The rest of the glasses are placed around the center one or again as they may have directed you. Each glass is filled with to the brim with crystal clear water as water is the main conductor to the spirit world. Place your bible on the table with the incense. After this, your rosary and 7 day WHITE candle that should be placed in front of the glasses lit.
Again this is just the basic set up, once you get the hang of it more offerings can be placed coffee with a cigar for the Congo spirits. Flowers are also an important essence in the altar, I would recommend white or how your Egun may instruct.

Throwin’ the Bones
Of the divinatory techniques with which I am familiar, bones are my personal favorite. Yes, they have that very witchy vibe – but it’s more than that; the bones are honest. They don’t sugar coat, and while they have to be interpreted, once you know how to read them – there’s little room for interpretation. They are very direct and are much better suited to answering yes or no questions than tarot. With a little imaginative methodology, there few questions the bones can’t answer. And even fewer they won’t answer (as tarot cards can be known to do). A few examples of things I think the bones are better at answering than tarot: questions involving time, questions regarding health, sickness and maledictions; they present a broader grasp to any given situation – incorporating things outside of the question presented and how these things relate to the question or the reading, showing the interconnectedness of life – and how these things all relate back.
Our countless cultures have countless methods for collecting and reading the Bones – and I can only rightly attest to my own methodology: one in which the Bones need not necessarily consist solely of bones, but a collection of gathered trinkets and curios, all with their own meaning, their own story and their own energy. My collection consists of: bones (bare and painted), coins, stones, shells, jewelry, twigs, buttons, animal teeth and other squabbles. The only rule I implement is that the item can be easily gathered and (safely) tossed without breakage or injury (save your razor-blades and glass shards for witches’ bottles!).
Collecting the Bones and Bobbles
Most any small bones will do, though its recommended that you use bones that haven’t been cooked, as cooked bones have a tendency to get very brittle – especially in the case of chicken, which is quite common. In my collection I have a number of different animal bones: most are chicken, but I also have some raccoon and possum bones, as well as teeth and claws. I built a “base” of bones, but am continuously adding or replacing as I see fit.
A short list of “Bones” I like to include – most of which serve as my “base” bones:
Self Bone – used for the reader
Other Bone – used to represent another person or the person you are reading
Magic Bone – represents the need for or use of magic
“Evil” Bone – malicious or hateful acts, disadvantageous behavior
Love Bone – represents romantic love
Male Bone – represents male fertility, masculinity, sexuality or a man
Female Bone – represents female fertility, femininity, sexuality or a woman
Health Bone – represents physical or mental health
Wealth Bone – represents financial standing or monetary issues
Family Bone – represents familial connections or a family member
Fate Bone – represents destiny and your lifepath (I use a shell for this: open side up means an event can be altered, destiny is not set in stone; open side down, this path must be walked – prepare in lieu of fighting)
“Key” Bone – (I actually use a small key) which represents the key to any given situation, the remedy or problem at hand and its cause
This list is by no means comprehensive and I have many more bones in my collection with more menial meanings. This is simply a small list of options to be added to and adapted by whosoever casts the bones.
Reading the Bones
There is no right or wrong way to read the bones, there is simply your way and their way. Below I will dictate how it is that I do a general reading – again, this is just an example of one way, take and adapt to fit your own unique style or tradition!
Begin by collecting your bones into your hand. I keep mine in a leather pouch, but don’t like to toss them directly from the bag as it doesn’t allow for much control – i.e. the bones fall out either in a massive, unreadable pile or they fly out in such a scattered way nothing is close enough to read. Throwing them from the hand allows for a rather contained casting, and one that can be read easily. I do not include the Self or Other bone, instead, the Self Bone is placed before the caster and the Other Bones is placed either in front of the person you’re reading for or simply in the middle of the casting area. When reading for yourself, place the Self Bone in the center and discard the Other Bone.
Throw the Bones. This can be done on a square of cloth on which a circle (or any number of complex shapes) has been drawn or simply upon a flat table. If throwing in a circle, discard all bones that fall outside of it. These bones are null for the reading, though they can also be read as “far from the person’s mind/current situation.”
Interpret the Bones. This is done by noting the location and connection of the bones present. For instance, note the Love Bones proximity to the Other Bones and the Male Bone. This could be interpreted as being the male love of the querent – but if the “Evil” bones is introduced, this could symbol ulterior motives or a hostile or explosive relationship. Read based on both their proximity to the Other Bone – the closer, the higher priority the matter is – and their relation to one another. It’s very much like investigating a big puzzle, putting it together piece by piece to form a comprehensive understanding of their life or situation. Also not their relation based on the third dimension: x bone seems to be overlapping y bone – is the x issue eclipsing an underlying problem or truth represented by y? It depends. Only through practice will you find clarity.
Convey the message. I always like to spend a few moments making a variety of “hmm” noises when reading for others – it builds up their anticipation. Or you can throw in the occasional gasp or snarky smirk. Their responses are usually hilarious – even more so when yours are genuine! If you are reading on your own, it may be a good idea to sketch out a general map of the readings as opposed to taking a picture as often bones overlie others, which makes for a rather misleading photo representation. You might also find jotting down notes rewarding, especially in synthesizing a cohesive read.
Once you’ve garnered all the information you can from that particular toss, feel free to specify: take the bone/situation you wish to examine and toss the rest again over it/them, reading the others through that particular lens. I.E. Who is this person mentioned? What are their qualities? What is the nature of this love? What magic is being referenced here? Follow that rabbit hole as far as you wish, building your understanding.
Do not be afraid to adjust your style! Want to narrow down a time frame? Make a sort of timeline with the bones. Wish to determine the source of an ailment? Shape the bones into the form of a body. I find the bones allow for far more creativity and ingenuity than cards. And above all – TRUST YOUR GUT.
Photos: These are photos of my “base” bones when I first started reading; since then they have probably doubled (if not tripled) in number and do not incorporate my other animal bones, claws or teeth.

RUDA
Tumblr media

EGG CLEANSE / LIMPIA
Egg cleanse are super simple, you would do one of these obviously to get rid of any negative energy whether it be you feeling funky or feel as tho someone has places something on you, my family comes from Mexico and this is a very common thing to do mainly more for kids who have nightmares and using the lords prayers while doing the cleansing. I’m gonna show you a way that’s super simple, can be done on anyone, and doesn’t require catholic prayers (unless ofc if you want to use those prayers)
So to start obviously you need an egg, a clear cup of water, and something to cleanse the egg with like holy water or Florida water or if you don’t have any of that just get a bowl with some water and add some lime and salt to it and give the egg a little bath in that. You do this to cleanse the egg of its own energies before it starts on you, keep in the mind the egg has been around a lot of tings and people before it got to you.
To start, cleanse the egg then say some kind of intentions/prayers that this egg absorbs and cleanses your body of all negative energy.
Call your spirt guides your ancestors ect. Whoever you want
Then just start from the top of your head rubbing the egg all around turning the egg in your hand as you do it, just go as fast as you feel you need to, you may even feel at some points you’ll need to hold the egg in that place for longer. Usually that’s because of either some kind of past injury or an energetic blockage. Then once the egg was rubbed all over you/ or someone else, you crack that egg in the clear cup of water and give it a min to settle, you should feel lighter and more open.
Then look into to the cup and see if you see any symbols, reading the egg is hard some people say but its very simple and very intuitive. The general rule to reading your egg is the clearer the egg the less that’s going on in the cup the better, that means their wasn’t a lot of negativity in you, but if your egg is very cloudy and bubbly and full of spikes then that means their was definitely a lot of negativity absorbed. So the best thing to see is a totally clear egg, means ur good to go! And the most negative sign would be blood in the egg.
Now obviously keep in mind that now a days a lot of markerts sell bobble yolked egg and all that, and keep in mine that some eggs might be bad ect. But if what you see makes sense to the situation then take that as a definite sign!
And when you’re all done looking into the egg you can just flush it down the toilet and I like to wash the cup with lots of salt to make sure none of that negativity gets left over!

👁️Rolling papers /Blunt Wrap/Hemp Leaf, Etc.
🌵Optional: An Amethyst for because it’s cute.
Tumblr media
Step by step:
Write down your intention for this reading and the question you wish to ask.
Grind, blend, and roll your herbs into your chosen wrap
Light the incense and light the candle
If you chose to, insert any prayer /spell oriented towards divination.
Chose your plate, clean & Cleanse it in the incense smoke.
Cleanse your Joint in the smoke aswell
Mark the PRESENT position at the closest point towards you (Pictured below), time moves clockwise on the plate and your current season will show up twice; Once for the PRESENT season, and a second time for the coming season.
Tumblr media
🍁Light, smoke, and enjoy; flick your ashes into the plate, but try not to LOOK directly at it so it stays random and helps eliminate bias
🍁Take notes on how the joint is burning, how it smokes. For example, I had a big ember plop out into the summer position
🍁Interpret and examine the symbols left behind in the ash, let your gaze soften and see where your mind wanders.

The Magic of Chickens
Chickens are beautiful magical creatures. Domesticated between 5000-8000 years ago, these birds have been integrated into every culture all over the world for mundane and magical purposes alike. In my first personal post I wanted to share my little bit of magical knowledge on chickens.
Chickens are known to be cleansing creatures. Scratching at the ground clearing their path to forage for food or to borough into the ground to nest. As mundane as this action seems, the simple sweeping of the foot clears negative energies along with them. The dirt disturbed from the ground holds this magical energy transferred as the chicken goes on about its business looking for sustenance or making itself at home. Collect this dirt and sprinkle it across your door way as you say your spell or psalms/prayer to dispell/clear any jinxes known or unknown of all persons who cross the threshold. Or use in addition to road opening spells to help cleanse the road of any negativy and etc.
Not only is chicken scratch part of their housekeeping routine, chickens self groom, cleaning their feathers. Using their beak they pick and remove parasites/insects that attach themselves to make a meal of the bird. The magical cleansing use of their beak can be powdered, (when the chicken has passed of course), and added to any spells or preserved to be used as a ritual tool to remove energetic parasites or unwanted persons who seem to act as leeches in our lives.
In addition to the beak and “chicken scratch” dirt, the feathers and feet of chickens can be used as a tool in cleansing rituals, for fanning incense or the feet dried and preserved as mojos either carried for protection or hung over windows and doorways to clear and remove negative energies that pass through. The feet could also be used as a replacement for “voodoo” dolls/doll babies, etc. Decorate, charge, and baptize them to represent your target and use as needed.
And the best tool for last….the Egg!
Chicken eggs are an incredible and versatile magical tool. The egg in whole form can be used as a tool to remove hexes and negative energy. Simply say a prayer or cleansing spell as you run the unbroken egg over the subjects body from head to toe, ensure you cover the palms and underside of the feet. Repeat the spell/prayer until you have finished rubbing the body with the egg. You can rub the body as many times as you feel is right. If you dont have a spell or cannot recite a prayer envision a white light glowing from the egg abosrbing negative energy from the body. Once you have completed this ritual get rid of the egg either by placing it in a paper bag and burying it at a crossroad that you do not frequent or simply flush it down the toilet. If you take the egg out of the house keep it in the paper bag and do not expose to the sun light (family superstition). This cleansing can be incorporated into any massage or energy work.
Eggs can be used for divinination, this is not something I am entirely an expert in however there are plenty of resources available online and in printed text.
Here’s my little bit knowledge in egg divination: To do a reading you can follow the same action as you would for a cleansing however instead of throwing the egg out immediately you break the egg open into an uncontaminated glass of room temp water and allow it to rest for 15 minutes at least before reading. My family only does this to look for the evil eye and to ensure its removal. When the egg resembles an eye then the egg cleansing was a success, if it’s abnormal shaped then another cleansing must be done. If there is no shape that forms then it means that there was no evil eye, still a success as any negativity present has been cleared. Blood spots may indicate negative health problems, however I cannot expand on this as I am limited in my knowledge on this. You can refer to a dream dictionary to interpret images/shapes you see formed in the egg white. Some people also include the egg shell in the reading either by crushing it and adding to the water and reading the shape of the pieces or where the pieces fall or by reading the egg shell as is after breaking the yolk and whites into the water, analyzing the lines of the cracks. Dispose as you would at the end of a cleansing. Do not keep the egg for more than 24 hours as the negative energy can leak back into the atmosphere and again do not expose to the egg to sunlight. Another way to do readings is when you are cooking them, paying attention to the shapes that form in the egg whites or egg yolk as they cook. Depending upon the omen you may take caution on eating them after the reading. You can incorporate tarot, pendulums and etc for further interpretations.
Egg Shell
Eggs can be hollowed out and washed to use for containers spells. Clean the egg by poking holes in the bottom and top of the egg and blowing out the whites and yolk or breaking the bottom of the egg, wash with water and dry. Place items for your spell inside the empty shell and seal up with glue and tissue paper or paper mache paste and deploy spell as needed (burying or place in window/pathways).
Tip to dry egg shells faster: Turn oven to warm, place egg shells on baking sheet and dry for 15 minutes in the oven or until egg shell is dry.
Egg shells can also be powdered and used in spell work or mixed with salt and placed in doorways or windows for protection and cleansing. Magical chalk can be made too using egg shell powder to draw sigils/circles or write spells onto surfaces.
These are not the only useful magical tools and uses chickens have to offer. There are plenty more magical uses of chickens available through valid other resources. I hope to also expand on this subject in later posts.
If you feel so inclined you can honor and thank your chickens for their use by taking a moment to talk to them, cleaning out their water container and giving them fresh clean water. Cleaning their coop, giving them special treats or simply thanking them verbally for their work. A little appreciation helps strengthen the magical work of the tools you use. If you use store bought eggs support an organic farm raised cruelty free brand and simply thank the chicken in spirit.

Fuck Outta Here Brujeria
Tumblr media
This is a how to on a Brujeria I call “Get the fuck outta here”. It’s a combination banishing spell/ hex/ and cleanse. This brujeria works in 3 parts (rules of 3).
Part 1: The Banishment
First, you’ll want to Banish the unwanted person from your life. For this you’ll need:
1. An envelope
2. Paper to write your “target”s name
3. Magick alphabet of your choice (any language you choose is fine)
4. El Anima Sola novena candle (dressed or anointed is best)
5. Your target’s fingernail clippings (If you are having a hard time with a habitual cheater a used condom is another way to go about this or a cut up piece of their underwear)
On the envelope write the last thing you remember that person saying to you (texts are perfect for this). On the paper write your target’s name and what it is that they’ve done to wrong you. Place the nail clippings/used items in the envelope and seal using your tongue.
Place the envelope on your altar and light El Anima Sola novena candle placing the envelope UNDER the candle.
El Anima Sola is typically used in spellwork dealing with heartbreaks, feelings of abandonment, and purgatory (putting you through hell and back/ cheating and coming back).
After lighting the candle, focus your energy on the flame. Think of all the pain this person has put you through. If your novena candle comes with a petition on the back, feel free to use this as a guide. Otherwise, ask El Anima Sola to hear your petition and to banish (target’s name) from your life. If the candle burns strong, its a good sign your petition is being considered. El Anima Sola spells can be strengthened by praying for a soul in purgatory, or by offering fresh white flowers. Burn candle for 7 days.
At this point you might notice yourself losing feelings for this person, they aren’t answering messages/calls, or other ways in which she’s “freed” you from Purgatory with this person. When you feel confident that your spirit is clear (meaning you aren’t going to go back on this) you can proceed to The Hex.
Part 2. The Hex
What you’ll need:
1. The envelope from part 1.
2. A black candle rolled in Pepper
3. Your spit
4. A burial spot
Take the envelope and burn your black hex candle. If you don’t have a glass shut up candle I would suggest carving the name of the person you’re hexing on your black candle, as well as the intention (shut up, fuck off, never return, etc.) Burn the candle directly on the envelope, allowing the wax to melt over the back of the envelope. This seals the hex to the banishment that’s already been started. Watch the wax drip onto the envelope and remind yourself that this is what they deserve, what you’re capable of creating. Once the candle has burned down and completely sealed your envelope take it outside and bury it (in their yard preferably) (or put it in the trash, because this person is trash to you) and once buried spit onto the envelope’s rest place saying “fuck outta here”. Turn your back, and don’t look at it again. You’ve buried this person, taken out the trash.
Part 3. The Cleanse
What you’ll need :
1. Coconut Milk
2. Honey
3. Brown Sugar
4.  Dragon’s breath incense
By this point the person should be out of your life. If not completely, so much so that they can’t hurt you anymore. Give the brujeria time and watch what happens. When you feel sufficiently separated and free of this person take a bath using the coconut milk in the bath water. While in the bath burn the Dragon’s Breath incense. Mix honey and brown sugar into a paste/scrub and use on your skin from head to toe. As you massage the honey and sugar into your skin feel how soft it is, this is the new you, a you free to be soft and sweet. Indulge yourself in this act because you have the power to cleanse yourself.

Traditional Hoodoo and Latin Brujeria Spiritual Bath
Tumblr media
This is a spiritual bath that you can take if you dont have a bath tub because you will need to be standing up for this.
This is for a love drawing spiritual bath but you can change Ingredients based on your intentions.
Ingredients: you can use herbs in dried or powdered form
A bowl or pot
Damania
Jasmine
Rose petals
Patchouil
Coconut Milk
Flordia Water
2 Cups of Water
Novena White Candle ( in this case you can also use red or pink match color to your intention)
Add your herbs or powders in the bowl one by one praying and thanking the herb for its power make sure you tell each ingredient what you want to do. Mix all herbs and ingredients with your hand so that you lend your energy and work into it. Now add the coconut milk and flordia water. And lastly add the water also thanking the water because water is our life force. Then put the novena candle in the middle of the bowl light the candle with your intention and let it burn for at least an hour.
Now removed the candle from the bowl but do not snuff it or blow it out. You can take this bath outside in your back yard or you can take it in your shower. Grab the herbs floating at the top and scrub from your feet upwards stopping at your shoulders. It is not necessary to cover your face or head also its not recommended in this case. Make sure you are meditating on your intention and prayer giving thanks to who ever you work with ancestors the universe, gods and goddesses etc. After being fully scrubbed with the herbs you can then pour the remaining liquid on your body if its a one time bath. You can also take these baths in 3, 9, or 13 consecutive days just make sure you make a batch large enough and store it in your refrigerator between uses since it contains coconut milk. Now you can rinse yourself off in the shower and allow the novena candle to completely burn down all the way.

Psalms can be sung, but in popular Jewish, Protestant Christian, Spiritualist, and Catholic Christian traditions, it is more common to recite them, either from memory or from a book, as a form of prayer, or while performing other devotions, such as bathing oneself, performing a spiritual cleaning of a home or business, placing candles or vigil lights upon an altar, or suffumigating a room or person with incense.
In hoodoo and conjure practice, the Jewish custom of reciting specific Psalms over oils or water to fix or empower them is also found. Your spiritual counsellor may provide you with talismans, mojo bags, incense, or other spiritual supplies that have been blessed through the recitation of Psalms, or may instruct you in your own use of Psalms while handling your case for you.
The tradition of praying the Psalms for magical, medical, or social remediation is an old Jewish custom. Additionally, Jewish folk magicians and kabbalists have, over the centuries, developed a method of working with the Psalms in prescriptive rites, such as the consecration of talismans, and as an adjunct to spell-casting for various conditions. The earliest book on this subject, the Hebrew text “Shimmush Tehilim” (“On the Use of the Psalms”) dates back to the 10th century CE.
In the 1700s, Johannes Gottfried Seelig, a German Jewish convert to Christianity, translated “Shimmush Tehilim” into the German language. Shortly thereafter, it entered the United states when Seelig himself emigrated to Pennsylvania, where he lived with a group of devout men known as “The Monks of the Wissahickon.” By the early 1800s, the book had been well accepted among Pennsylvania German Christian practitioners of brauchererai folk magic (which is better known to English-speaking Americans as Pow Wow magic).
In the late 19th century, the American Ashkenazi Jewish publishers Wehman Brothers translated Seelig’s German-language edition of “Shimmush Tehilim” into English, and Anglicized the author’s name as well. Under the title “Secrets of the Psalms, A Fragment of the Practical Kabbalah” by “Godfrey Selig,” the ancient Jewish magic book was introduced to the African American folk magic community by Jewish pharmacists and occult-shop owners. By the early 1900s, “Secrets of the Psalms” had become one of the most popular books used by conjure doctors and spiritual practitioners of hoodoo and rootwork, and its wide popularity continues to the present day.
Our compilation of the uses of the Psalms in hoodoo and rootwork is based on the English-language edition of “The Secrets of the Psalms” (and thus on “Shimmush Tehilim”), and it also incorporates original African American hoodoo variations on this ancient Jewish book of magical art.
Bibliomancy with the Psalms
Although it is a slim volume, the Psaltery may be consulted on matters of divination, for within its 150 songs are verses that cover virtually the entire gamut of human life. To divine with The Book of Psalms, one needs only the book and a moment of calm, peaceful silence. (Read More…)
