Our guide from @sentosa_island , Saifullah Kamaludin, was fantastic. Interesting and knowledgeable, with a passion for his job as co-lead of the Culture and Heritage initiatives under the Sustainable Sentosa programme. We literally Lara Craft Tomb Raider through the wilderness of Sentosa's forests this morning to find the remains of World War II. And yes, the area is out of bounds, only opened during this organised visits cos its a safety hazard without proper guides, the safety ropes, and paramedics and ambulance on standby. Wear proper hiking boots, lots of mozzie repellant and be prepared to climb and feel like you're "jungle-ing" your way through roots, leaves, branches and more. Thank you @nhb_sg! The Fall of Singapore, also known as the Battle of Singapore, took place in the South–East Asian theatre of the Pacific War. The Japanese Empire captured the British stronghold of Singapore, with fighting lasting from 8 to 15 February 1942. To mark the 81st anniversary of the Fall of Singapore, the National Heritage Board (NHB) returns with its annual Battle for Singapore initiative with a series of special guided tours, talks, exhibitions and film screenings documenting the event. For more details, visit https://go.gov.sg/bsg2023 Registration opens on 8 February 2023, 10am at https://bsg2023.peatix.com. From 10 February to 5 March 2023, Battle for Singapore 2023 will take participants on a journey to trace the roots of Singapore’s wartime past, and uncover the hidden stories about various World War II (WWII) sites. This year, participants will get a chance to explore the grounds of Fort Connaught through a special access tour, which is the first-ever public tour since the fort’s construction in 1878. Built for the defence of Keppel Harbour, a crucial ship-building and repair facility in Singapore, Fort Connaught was armed with 9.2-inch guns – these were the largest on Sentosa, and were used to engage invading Japanese troops during the Battle for Singapore. The tour will give participants a glimpse into the abandoned Fort’s history, construction and its role in Singapore’s defence during the Japanese invasion of WWII. OK, literally Lara Craft Tomb Raider through the wilderness of Sentosa's forests this morning to find the remains of World War II, along with spiders, many insects and as one participants exclaimed "The largest ants he had ever seen!". An FB acquaintance messaged me out of the blue. Suspecting a scam, I checked his account to find he hadn't post in years, & I found one of my tagged post, from 2011! Reading the words, I realised it's been a long time since I've written such words, & found I needed the words. I met up with two old friends from school days. We've stuck with each other through thick & thin, through laughter & tears, through happiness & pain, through ups & downs - indeed, through a lot in life. We're comfortable enough to not only share our pain & troubles, but to help each other through them, without judgement or hesitation. Indeed, it's easy to be friends when one is on top of the world, but it's only when you're down and out , that you know who your true friends are. : "I was thinking earlier this morning about how people see things differently. Eg, the East Coast. I love just gazing out to the sea & I enjoy looking at the ships in the distance. To me, the ships represent dreams, adventures, possibilities & foreign lands. I love dreaming of where the ships are going, what they see on their journeys through oceans, through good and bad weather, the different countries they see, the people they meet. I think of the mystical Bali Hai in South Pacific musical and pretend there's a mystical island just in the far distance. Yet, I have people telling me these ships are ugly and they make the East Coast ugly and it spoils the coastline. So, two views. One totally negative and seeing nothing but ugliness & being negative, one where you let your imagination soar free and dream of possibilities and you see the beauty in things instead of ugliness. I guess one can see the beauty in ugliness and one can also see the ugliness in beauty. Well, today and this week, how will you see people , the world and things around you? You have a choice. I have been meeting nice people, I have been meeting not so nice people, I've had people who I thought was nice showed their true colous which made me sad because I thought so well of them and cared for them, but above all, I've had many people being nice to me this week. Have a great week, And let your imagination go and soar. 🙏 (at Singapore / Singapura / 新加坡 / சிங்கப்பூர்) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiR9DVNOvaU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

a sight on beauty causes insomnia
a day in separation makes mania
roving and roaming I look for the figure
over here and there chances seem no bigger
tunes I played and tenderness I displayed
never accepted as I requested
to hold your heart in arms is what I wish
yet the attempts in vain let me perish
- looking for you 凤求凰, by sima xiangru

Fine. Since you have never treated me as your companion, then tell me. Why did we swear our allegiance by biting the arm before your mother’s memorial tablet then? I’ve said that you’re not alone. You don’t have to be afraid. I’ll live and die with you.

Singapore reopened with a bang. The last couple of months passed in a blur, and a flurry of events and happenings, as I ran all around Singapore, barely sleeping. This week, Singapore Night Festival returns. Ran around last 2 nights on a preview crawl - and this is what it was like. It was hot and muggy as hell too. Feeling boxed in? Like a round peg in a square hole? #SGNIGHTFEST Singapore Night Festival 2022 19 - 27 August 2022, 7.30pm – 12.00am Bras Basah.Bugis https://www.nightfestival.gov.sg #Singaporenightfestival #brasbasah #Festivals #SNF2022 #Singapore #sgart #sgartist #NhawfalJumaat #SGCultureEverywhere NOCTURNE: CONVERSATIONS WITH WATERLOO BY NHAWFAL JUMA'AT 19 Aug to 27 Aug 7.30pm - 12am Nhawfal Juma'at Waterloo Complex What gives a place significance? What creates space for new memories, ideas and imagination? The answer is what binds us together. NOCTURNE: Conversations with Waterloo presents two sculptures captured in a transient moment when a conversation is midway, overheard in a communal space like the coffeeshop; where possibilities of the discussion are limitless. Playing on humankind’s intrinsic nature to create and engage in conversation, the artwork encapsulates the feeling one gets when accidentally overhearing a snippet of conversation while enroute to a destination, and finding what was said oddly relatable even if just for a moment. The concept of conversation, a phenomenon that allows us to understand, contemplate and traverse the passage of time, is likened to nocturnes lighting up in our minds growing and expanding, similar to how plants respond to the sun in constant reincarnation and rebirth. A guiding light for those lost at sea, the lighthouse gives a sense of comfort to seamen leaving and returning home. Aptly located at the entrance of Raffles City – which would have then been along the Singapore shoreline before land reclamation took place in 1822 – this installation is a nod to the Bugis people and their rich history as seafarers. Conveying the value of bergotong-royong (Malay for cooperation), the tower comprises five figures sitting stacked on one another's shoulders. At the top is the roof of a traditional kampung house, signifying shelter and safety as our community slowly transitions into “the new normal”. Creating an atmospheric auditory experience is an accompanying soundtrack featuring the sounds of the sea and kampung life drawn from SoundScapeSG and the National Archives of Singapore.
