Costume Entry Title: Snow White
Name: Mandy Pursley, of Be the Spark Cosplay
Costume Description: Original Design
For this original costume design, I drew inspiration from both the original German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, as well as the color palette of the familiar Disney version of Snow White. I wanted to imagine Snow White on the other side of her happy ending - no longer a girl hiding in the woods, but a queen who is now full of confidence and joy! The corseted, lined bodice is made of velvet, lace and satin, with around 1000 gold beads and pearl chains that were done by hand. There is an internal structure of canvas and steel boning for support. The collar is constructed of satin, lace and pearl trim with steel boning. The skirt was made with diamond pintuck silk dupioni, knife pleated and embellished by hand with around 900 pearls. The train features velvet and lace, gathered with cartridge pleating at the waistband. (Purchased pieces include the wig, crown and necklace.) Bio: I currently live in North Carolina, USA. I have been sewing for over a decade but really found my passion in cosplay! I also have a congenital limb difference and am always excited to use costumes to show that all types of bodies are beautiful and belong in cosplay. I started Be the Spark Cosplay to give a platform for disability-inclusive cosplays, both my own and those done by other talented cosplayers! Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Mandy Pursley, with Ryan Pursley Costume Name: Cinderella...With a Twist! Costume Description: Growing up as an arm amputee, I dreamed of the day when fairy tales would include characters who looked like me too! I came up with the idea of Cinderella trading out her glass slippers for a glass arm, and set to work making this story come to life. I "single-handedly" sewed Cinderella's dress and Prince Charming's uniform, and created a way for Cinderella to transform from peasant to princess in a snap! In true Cinderella fashion, the finishing touches were completed by my real-life fairy godfather, Gilbert Lozano, who created the beautiful glass arm. I hope this cosplay inspires others to see their differences as beauty, and to recognize that everyone is worthy of love and adventure! Bio: Mandy Pursley lives in Oceanside, CA, with her real-life Prince Charming, Ryan Pursley. She has been sewing for 10 years, and began getting into the cosplay community six years ago. Recently, Mandy has found a sense of empowerment through incorporating her limb difference into her costumes, cosplaying both familiar amputee characters and re-imagining old favorites. She created Be the Spark Cosplay as a way to showcase her costumes and celebrate others who are using cosplay to break out of the mold!
