Here was where Amity knew she was more out of her depth.
Her past training mostly focused on cardio and stamina. She had done some boxing and built up some muscle, but she'd never done straightforward weightlifting before. In Amity's mind, it was the type of thing that mundus bros did, while bragging about their sick biceps or whatever.
But it was an important part of this new regimen. So Amity would start at 12-- see how it felt, go from there.
"Looked simple enough," commented Amity. "I'll start at twelve too."
She grabbed the weights and first went into the lunges-- her leg muscles still wobbly from the cardio, but she just grit her teeth. "How's my form?"

Amity's eyebrows rose. Then rose higher.
Coming from the Boiling Isles, where the confluence of magic and demon energy was high, she was used to weird shit. Most people had...something weird about them. For Amity, it was her two hearts, which gave her twice the amount of magic as someone else. For Willow, it was her tail. For Boscha, it was her third eye, which saw prophecies.
Maybe Kleo had a history of prophecy in her family too? And it had woken up?
"Like a vision?" she asked. "Do you have a history of precogs in your family?"

Despite Amity trying to be a nicer person, as far as she was concerned, an obnoxious mundus like Pip-- totally not off-limits. Not like Pip was gonna hear anything that Amity and Kleo said anyway.
So Amity thought there might be more gossip coming. Her eyebrows raised and she leaned in a little. "Oh sure. I don't even know most of the cast anyway."
Besides Mim, but Amity wouldn't repeat anything Pip-related to Mim anyway, since they were actually kind of friends.

Amity supposed... she hadn't tried that.
There were a lot of things she hadn't tried. When she began to write, they'd just been short drabbles in her own notebook, mostly inspired by her own curiosity over what might happen in the next Good Witch Azura book that she hadn't gotten her hands on yet. Those little drabbles then turned into longer pieces, but still...one-offs. Until at some point, she had come across AO3 and realized, oh, this was a thing.
But she didn't know anything about technique, or different writing exercises, or like, plotting tools, that kind of thing. So maybe writing out of order could help her? Amity could give it a shot.
"Maybe I'll try it, just to try it," said Amity with a thoughtful nod. "Honestly, you're like-- way more of a writer than me. I've never even taken a creative writing class."
Tumblr media
She blushed lightly, but this was a pretty big deal for a girl like Amity to admit out loud.
But Maddy was kind. And maybe she could share more tips.

"Really?" said Amity, raising her eyebrows.
She didn't know Pip well. But everything she did know she had learned against her will, considering Pip popped up practically everywhere in town. He was good-ish friends with Mim too, so sometimes Amity heard from her about things.
Mostly, Amity found him obnoxious. Anyone who had to talk that loudly about their accomplishments didn't actually have anything impressive to say.
"Wow, guess he really is full of hot air."

Amity barely stopped herself from finishing the water bottle entirely. She'd make herself sick, drinking too much too fast. She remembered that much from previous training. So she blinked up at the ceiling and took another few deep breaths.
Each tick of the clock was brutal-- moving too fast and somehow too slow at the same time. Amity didn't want Q to think she'd wiped herself out--
If Q thought that, that meant Q would have been right. Amity hated that idea. Nothing like stubbornness to find the energy to keep going, huh?
"I'm good," Amity said, though she probably could have taken another three, four minutes. She pulled at her ponytail again. "Weights next?"

Yeah, Amity wouldn't mind a couple more days off.
She'd not even done anything with her spring break. She'd mostly been training with Q, and then trying to work on her personal fic. But it was nice not to have class crowding those more interesting pursuits, y'know? Amity did not actually want to go to a secular university; she was just doing this for the Magick Grand Prix program, that was all.
She sighed. "Yeah, it was way too short. Plus you spent yours in Paris." Amity wrinkled her nose, having a low opinion of the city considering the anti-magick sentiment. "Did you have any time to yourself?"

You're so cool, thought Amity to herself, in the quietest voice imaginable, a voice that probably belonged to a much younger version of her who still thought she had a chance to make friends with kids like Luz.
Y'know-- the bold kids. The funny kids. The kids that seemed to have so much fun without even trying all that hard. Amity wasn't that kind of kid. She'd had to watch herself, so she didn't embarrass the Blight name. She couldn't go to parties or hang-outs, not when she had homework and training.
And so naturally what popped out of Amity's mouth instead was:
"Right. So er-- it's right there."
She pointed to the left, at a diagonal. The display was pretty prominent. Sometimes it was at the front of the store, as a way to encourage Swynlakers to read more magick authors, but it was early in the week which meant the new releases were in the front and the magick author display had been moved into about the middle of the store.

"I've never done anything like that before," commented Amity, frowning-- but like, in a thoughtful way. Maybe she could try that? But it also felt so weird, just to skip all that build up... how could she write one scene without knowing what happened in the scene before it?
"Do you do that a lot? Like, write out of order? I've never done that," admitted Amity. Her ears got a little red underneath her hair. Was that what real writers did?

The treadmill slowed and Amity lurched forward, but she caught herself. Now her legs were really wobbly, her lungs lit on fire. She took huge breaths in, and tried to control them. Slow down her heartbeats, at least a little. In and out. In and out.
Titan, she needed to guzzle a whole pit of water. That's what she needed right now.
She told Q as much. "Thirsty," she gasped, as she reached for the water bottle slotted into the treadmill. She popped the top and took a few big gulps, relishing the instant relief it brought. But her muscles were still burning.

Amity was barely concentrating either but that was because this reading was so dull.
Most of it, she already knew-- magickal history was child's play for kids from the Boiling Isles. She'd done this kind of learning in her first year at Hexside, and she'd received top marks. But besides that, the writing was dry. The last thing Amity wanted to do was have to write her own 1000 words on the persecution of magicks during the Crusades. Yack.
So when Kleo spoke, she basically saved Amity from falling asleep at the desk. "Oh my god, it's awful," Amity agreed. She crinkled her nose as she pushed her textbook away from her, like it was a plate of cold food she couldn't finish. "Just like this passage. Ugh, I've read the same paragraph ten times."

Amity did put her arms above her head then, hands pressed against her own head as she took another few deep breaths to steady herself. She had this. Just one more. Her lungs burned, but the rest of her was good-- legs strong and her heart pounding not just from the adrenaline, but conviction. Determination.
Tumblr media
Amity climbed back onto the treadmill and when Aquata signaled, she let another burst of speed go. The burn immediately spread through her body, but she kept pushing. Ten more seconds. Then ten more. You can do anything for ten seconds.

Conversation turned to Amity's work and--
Ugh, she made a face, glancing toward the Hatter windows as she rubbed the side of her neck.
She was still very much in writer's block territory, which was such a bitch. Amity was starting to think she should just delete the little she did have of her next chapter. Just start all over, right? Because clearly something wasn't working. (She wasn't working. She was just kidding herself, trying to write, when writing didn't matter.)
"Not great. I think I've written a paragraph, but I hate it so--" Amity crinkled her nose. "I dunno, I'm getting close to the point where Hecate and Azura should kiss but it's like... I can't get them there. Which is dumb, I've made them kiss like 70 times in other fics before."

It was like the start of a novel--
The Warrior of Peace burst into Chapter Three, the look in her eyes as sharp as the sword at her waist. It was about to go down.
Amity startled by the register, wanting nothing more than to duck down and hide.
Not because-- okay, look, Luz was obviously really cool and nice and all that. But when the WarriorOfPeace of Penstagram fame had walked into her Intro to Magick History class back in the fall, Amity had barely managed to keep her jaw off the floor. Ten million things had run through her head, ten million ways to introduce herself, that old yearning desire to talk to Azura fans who just got it the way that other fans just didn't but--
It was too big. She could fuck it up too easily. Her ten million things writhed inside of her until she crushed them and since then, she'd only talked in passing with Luz, and not about the Good Witch Azura.
We know. Pathetic. But it just was different than talking to anyone else about Azura, okay?
And now here she was, hair flying around her face, clearly on a mission and--
Amity was the only one working.
"Oh. Um, I can check to see if we have it in stock," said Amity, in a totally normal voice that disguised the inner fangirl panic, those ten million things once again fighting to get out of her mouth. "It should be in Magick Authors display though-- well, I know the first one is."

See, this was the nice thing about writing just for fun. Plot was kind of whatever to Amity. She was inspired more by like, specific scenes that came to her at night. She loved to imagine Azura and Hecate in different places, doing different things. What would they be like as rival spies, like in that Mr. and Mrs. Smith story? Or what about if Hecate and Azura met in an art class and Azura had to draw Hecate naked?
She wrote toward those scenes, the other details of the story always sort of filling in on their own. She didn't care about the message or theme or whatever-- that kind of came as she wrote too.
Mostly, she wanted to make her favorite characters kiss.
So she pursed her lips at all of Maddy's wonderings out loud. They were interesting, really. It just like, depended on the story, y'know?
"I mean, I read a lot of romance, so I like the lover thing-- but maybe if it's a box that slipped through the time-space continuum from another version of herself-- that's kinda neat too, right? Like, what's this other version of me like if I married that one person or went to a different school?" rambled Amity, shrugging.

This time, when Amity stopped the treadmill, they gulped big breaths in and out, one hand going to clutch the machine.
Fuck, that one had been tougher. To be expected though, right? But she had to get stronger, and the only way to do that was to push and push herself. She nodded at Aquata's tips, though she was too busy breathing to really say anything more. She had to save her energy for the last interval. One more. She could handle this.
This time, that minute break felt like ten seconds. Amity flicked some sweat out of her eye though and looked forward, determined.

"Fucking awesome!" Amity said, raising her voice.
Tumblr media
But let's see how the second interval went. She still thought she could handle it, though as she picked up speed, her heartbeat jumped into her throat. The burn had started in her legs too. But it was a good burn. A burn that told her she had what it took. She was strong, she was capable, she just had to stay focused.
