Today in "things i noticed while watching people play KH while im at work" in DDD Sora tells Shiki that Neku was "Looking everywhere for you." during the second visit to Traverse Town, like, the exact line Sora uses to Riku in KH2. and Neku gets all flustered. tack it onto the its cannon your honor.

Oh yeah I adore that parallel. I wrote about the Neku/Riku Shiki/Sora parallels a while back, and how they tied into Riku’s arc of realizing that Sora needed him (as a friend, not just a protector).

And here’s the quote from the novel for good measure:

“Yeah. I’m Shiki. Nice to meet you. Neku told me all about you.”

   “Cool. But you should have seen him. He looked everywhere for you.”

   Sora recalled how worried Neku had been when he was searching for Shiki after they first met. He’d been determined to go back to his world with his partner.

   But Neku hurriedly stopped him short. “Hey, Sora, stop talking!”

   “What? Why? You said you need her,” Sora replied. “That’s a good thing.”

   Shiki laughed at Neku’s mild panic. “That’s sweet, Neku,” she said.

   “I need you to stop annoying me.” Neku looked away and played with his bangs. Was he blushing?

   “Mm-hmm. Well, I still think it’s sweet. It’s nice to be needed,” the girl said as she tenderly cradled a stuffed plushie named Mr. Mew.

I highlighted that part because wow that sure does sound familiar! “He’d been determined to go back to his world with his partner” just like how Sora refused to go back to Destiny Island without Riku.

I also really love how genuinely confused Sora is about why Neku wants him to stop talking- because Sora is so earnest it doesn’t occur to him to be embarrassed about caring for someone that much (at least, not as of DDD...kh3 he starts exhibiting some of that) and more to the point: it illustrates a little bit his confusion over romantic love (in that Neku’s response confuses him). I don’t know if that’s the right way to put it but it always gave me that feeling that it’s related to that.

Truly I think I can count on a single hand the number of sorikus I’ve encountered that actually “hate Kairi because she gets in the way of the ship”. It’s an extremely uncharitable accusation that gets slung around at every soriku that doesn’t just absolutely love her though. I mean I understand wanting people to like the character you like, because maybe they have traits you relate to- so that when people dislike or just don’t care about them it can feel personal. But especially for a character who is almost universally agreed to have been written disappointingly, no one is obligated to love or enjoy them (and I think even if Kairi’s lack of development was intentional the execution has never been very good- that is a problem with writing).

#I forgot what else I wanted to say about this I’m just tired #also every time a soriku talks about Kairi’s flaws people think it’s hate?? no??? flaws are what makes a character interesting #Kairi being a flawed person is honestly the only surefire way to get me invested in her as a character #I should say- those flaws being explored #because we have those vague hints of flaws but they have never been addressed in a satisfying way

love that you're not a kairi anti. so many sorikus out there that blatantly dismiss her or dislike her (just bc she's 'in the way' of the ship) and don't even try to hide it, it's insane. we stan kairi AND soriku

Nah I don’t hate Kairi. I think she’s a character with wasted potential. I even relate to her in some ways. I wouldn’t say I stan her, but I do care about how she’s treated and get angry on her behalf.

What’s hard is that… it almost feels like the writers want you to find her annoying or not take her seriously or not expect much from her — especially by KH3. It’s uncomfortable.

I really try to be conscious of my biases. Is it the shipping goggles? Is it just me? I mean, the writers literally, physically put her “in the way” of Sora and Riku connecting. The writers constantly pit Kairi and Riku against each other and ask Sora to choose, and as he is the much more developed character, it’s hard not to root for Riku. It’s hard not to care about him more and take both him and his relationship with Sora more seriously. I don’t think it’s just me.

But I don’t blame Kairi for that. Just like I don’t blame a curtain for covering a window. Someone put the curtain up. Nomura has put her in this position. If anything, I’m frustrated with him and his writing.

Thank you for reminding me of this parallel I’m going crazy over it again and thinking about how Sora’s keyblade takes control and acts on its own- as an extension of Sora’s heart and subconscious acting without his conscious awareness- to guide Sora to Riku to save him just like it does in kh3 when Sora goes to rescue Riku in the RoD

I love how when kh3 came out people were complaining about Aqua just standing there as the heartless tornado comes to sweep her away and people were scoffing at the idea that it was intended to show ptsd from her time in the RoD like Nomura is incapable of showing characters having trauma responses? And then Remind came out and was like um yeah she does in fact have ptsd from her time in the RoD.

#like i understand the criticism of that whole scene but Aqua freezing up is not one of them
