Why the tiger has become a transgender symbol in Japan

Recently we learned about how some trans folks in Japan like to use tigers as a symbol for the trans community. It's a pun: Tora [虎] is the Japanese word for tiger, and when you sound out "trans" in katakana it basically starts with "tora." To-ra-n-su [トランス].

Toransu is clearly a loan word from English ("trans") that has been adapted to Japanese pronunciation (adding vowels/vowel epenthesis helps you avoid unpronounceable consonant clusters).

No idea if I’ve talked about this before, but one of my absolute favorite headcanons is that monsters in Fell universes are an example of aposematism, which developed while they were trapped underground.

If you don’t know what that is and don’t want to google it: it’s when a creature evolves traits that indicate to a predator/threat that it isn’t worth attacking. This is seen in poisonous frogs via bright colors to indicate toxicity and in butterflies and moth with eye patterns, meant to scare birds who don’t know any better.

So what does that have to do with the Fell monsters? Well to start with, they usually have red (ex: underfell) or purple (ex: swapfell) as prominent colors both in magic and clothing. Both colors when found in nature are often poisonous. Very clear DO NOT EAT colors unless you know better.

Secondly, they all have fangs and claws which their non-fell counterparts don’t. In nature, those traits are typically found in carnivores. Clearly monsters are not carnivorous, they’re omnivores. You could argue they developed sharper features as a fighting mechanism, except monster fight primarily with magic. They don’t need fangs or claws in a fight. This would mean that they are just for show and used as a natural deterrent against other monsters.

Basically I think the comparison between small, helpless creatures who have to pretend to be big and scary to survive and battle-torn monsters who need therapy is very fun.
