How to Comment on Fics and Encourage Authors
(Bughead fandom edition - but applies to every author everywhere)
Listen. It’s hard being a content creator. If you’ve been in fandom a while, this is not the first time you’ve heard this. It takes time, planning and research to put together a cohesive story. For many, it’s a labor of love and it’s a vulnerable experience putting up your work for all the world to see. It’s perfectly understandable to crave validation for something so personal beyond the click of a button. Especially on a medium that is essentially about human connection. We aren’t shouting into a void. We know there’s life out there. We’re seeing the hits and kudos rack up and we know that we’re reaching people. And someone speaking out from the void—someone with a name!—saying, ‘hey, I like your story’ is something special because they have liked this thing so much that you put so much of yourself into so much that they stood up from the anonymous masses to connect with you. Very few things in fandom feel quite as good as that. And for many writers, there is nothing more encouraging than seeing the evidence that REAL ACTUAL PEOPLE ARE READING WHAT I’VE WRITTEN.
Unfortunately, commenting is often a rarity in fandom.  A lot of people would like to comment but never know what to say—or they’re too shy or erroneously don’t feel like their comment will count for much. But the truth is, almost all writers appreciate comments. Even simple comments like ‘I love it!’ or ‘I enjoyed this update, thank you!’ mean the world. I don’t think people quite understand how simply speaking up and counting yourself as present in the mass of hit counts can inspire an author. You don’t have to share a complex literary analysis of the story if you don’t have the time or aren’t in that state of mind. But if you’ve read a story and liked it, do consider saying something.
I love it. I can’t wait to read more.
I really like how you characterized _______ here. You’re amazing at this.
I liked this quote. It made me laugh.
This was great. Thank you for sharing.
Just a few words like this and that author will be glowing for a few hours, I promise you. You’ll see the words flowing, the updates coming, authors feeling encouraged, and a lot more content—which is always a net positive for any fan community. More content means a more active and populous fandom; more opportunities to make friends and to keep celebrating the thing you love. Really. Support your content creators. They’re the ones keeping most of you here!
But in case you’re still short on ideas on what to comment on, or wanted to go the extra mile, I decided to go into our fandom and interview a couple of writers and see what kind of comments made them feel the best about themselves and what they were writing. Here are a few of their responses under the cut:

The Riverdale Register Weekly Review
Tumblr media
Your one-stop shop for all things Riverdale! Issue 9: September 3rd-9th
Editor-in-Chief: Lyss (@bettscoopr)
Managing Editor: Tori (@tory-b)
Graphic Editor: Katie (@betty-cooper)
Layout Editor: Sarah (@theheavycrown)
Spotlight Editor: Mila (@jughead-jones)
News Editors: Summer (@srainebuggie), Cat (@shibbycat), K (@bugggghead), and Holly (@my-broken-bones-are-mending90)
Spoilers and Leaks Weekly Roundup
By Lyss, @bettscoopr
Some leftover articles from last week… Lili and Madchen discussed The Farm, and Skeet mentioned FP’s marital status while still staying quite tight-lipped about his wife and daughter.
RAS posted a photo of our favorite (or potentially second favorite, for you Archie fans) redhead in a killer bikini to cure our Labor Day back-to-school blues Monday.
Cami, Cole, ‘n Co. had no such blues, except for the blues of the ocean they spent the day swimming in. (Honorable mention: KJ and Lili’s comments, which several pop culture websites LOVED.)
Tumblr media
On Tuesday, KJ teased that Season 3 is a “whole new beast.” Looks like Archie’s ready for whatever comes his way.
Entertainment Weekly Wednesday gave us our first look at Penelope Ann Miller in her role as Ms. Wright, Riverdale’s town prosecutor and apparently the biggest pain in Archie’s ass so far in Season 3.
TV Line was quick to add that the courtroom plot burns itself out fairly quickly to make room for explorations of The Farm and the Jones women. Hopefully, this info from the show’s EP indicates the showrunners have finally give up their dream of having at least 50 plot lines per season.
RAS, the official Riverdale Instagram account, and some of the show’s stars (notably Ashleigh) shared a new promotional poster for Season 3!
Comicbook.com took a more in depth look at what the posted might mean, citing RAS’s tweet and interviews with KJ and Madchen. KJ is hyped for prison!Archie.
Alvin Sanders was back on set as Pop Tate spreading some cheer.
The Keller-McCoy family shot a wholesome scene together at Pop’s. Don’t tell me that scene isn’t wholesome. Kevin is drinking a glass of milk, you guys. MILK.
Here’s Ashleigh and Robin without the boys.
And a nice BTS shot of Pop’s.
Betty will be sporting some bell bottom jeans this season, and less (or more?) importantly, Cole trolled Melton (pictured below).
Tumblr media
Cami chatted with WKRJ news about the addition of Hiram in season 2 and Veronica’s versatility and emotional range.
The CW used the Nun Run scene™, Vanessa’s personal favorite, to promote Season 3 Thursday.
Marisol was back on set (pictured above).
Cole and KJ had some fun on set, courtesy of Lili.
Skeet posted a rather vague Instagram story of his and Madchen’s cast chairs side by side with a Serpent jacket draped over both. I guess the question is… whose is it?
Tumblr media
RAS got himself a Southside Serpents sweatshirt! Where can I get mine?
Lili posted a few Instagram stories Friday, including a dig at Archie, a mysterious look out Betty’s window, and a joke about Skeet.
Tumblr media
Madchen is right, we’re not ready for Falice.
Cami and Marisol filmed a scene together.
Casey was next up for the promo videos.
Lili was sleepy between takes.
Tumblr media
As if any of us forgot, but just in case, Saturday PopSugar wrote up 10 things we should make sure we remember before Season 3 airs.
RAS posted “C” FOR CHONI!
Lili chatted “Betty’s evil legacy” Sunday for another promo video.
Ashleigh said Monday that she had the most fun performing Milkshake, Out Tonight, and her duet with Madelaine in the musical episode.
Highlights from the Cast
By Lyss (filling in for Summer, @srainebuggie, this week)
KJ shared a video of himself strumming an electric pink guitar Monday, while Cole, Cami, and others took to the sea.
And for those who are interested, Cosmopolitan posted an article featuring side-by-side photos of our wonderful leading ladies with and without makeup. Spoiler alert: they look beautiful either way.
ASOS shared photos of their fall cover stars Tuesday, including Lili.
If you can’t get a copy of the magazine, @amab1060 shared clips from her interview and @gershwinn posted a video.
More from ASOS here.
Lili Reinhart by Danielle Levitt for Glamour Magazine.
And here’s the cast for Rolling Stone! Aren’t Cole and Lili the cutest? KJ’s clearly the troublemaker of the group…
On Wednesday, Cole posted a new row of photos on Instagram. The photos, which you can find here, here, and here, will appear this month as part of a self-portrait story in Vogue Hommes, the international edition of Vogue for men, Cole announced.
Lili shared a photo from a shoot she did with H&M. Later in the week, H&M shared another. Here she is rocking the first outfit again. More from H&M here and here.
RAS showed his support for the cast Thursday.
Cole was the Game Master.
Marisol used to rock blue eyeshadow back in the day. Not sure if Hermione would approve of that look…
There are now enough shirtless photos of KJ to fill a periodic table.
Shannon Purser’s new movie came out on Netflix Friday. Co-star Noah Centineo has this to say about Shannon.
Cole, KJ, and Cami were nominated for People’s Choice Awards.
KJ attended the premier of The Hate U Give in Toronto and showed some love for star Amandla Stenberg while rocking an all-white look. He also had this to say on Instagram.
Dylan and his girlfriend Barbara Palvin attended the Harper’s Bazaar Icons Party. Hart was there, too.
Mark and Kelly attended the Ralph Lauren 50 year anniversary celebration.
Asha Bromfield (Melody) attended the Toronto International Film Festival.
Madchen attended the Creative Arts Emmys Saturday. She shared some of her favorite moments and presented Stephen Root with his award.
Cole and Lili were being hermits, probably maybe, according to anonymous sources. And then, after I wrote this, according to Lili herself.
I guess they got bored though, so they decided to break the Internet again.
Fandom Events
By Tori, @tory-b
Don’t forget to follow @buggiebreak, because we recently announced our KINK WEEK. This is a fandom event for creation of NSFW/Kinky creations. All will be reblogged and tagged appropriately. Check out the full announcement post as well as the other events we’ve held if you haven’t had a chance!
Is anyone else going to RiverCon in NJ October 6th-7th?? I am! And so are a few of my friends. What would people think about arranging some buggie meet ups? I’ve created a google sheet where you can write if you’re interested in meeting up with fellow buggies, what days you’ll be there, and your username. Hopefully this’ll be a good way to know who’s going to what when, and to meet some of your friends.
Cami and Lili will be there Saturday, Skeet and Cody will be there Sunday, and Lochlyn and Melton will be there both Saturday and Sunday.
The cast apparently has a jam packed weekend, because New York Comic Con’s Riverdale Panel is being held October 7th from 10-11 AM In the Hulu Theatre. KJ, Lili, Luke, and Madchen, as well as RAS will be there.
There’s also a Archie Comics Panel taking place October 6th from 11-12 in Room 1A24 – Javits Center.

Easter Eggs of the Week
By Cat, @shibbycat
Chapter 8: The Outsiders
The Outsiders: A gang of wealthy kids. A gang from the wrong side of the tracks. A fight resulting in a wealthy kid dying, and finally, the wealthier gang looking for a fight with the rival gang. Sounds right up Riverdale’s alley, right? Sans death, it could be the overall plot of Riverdale’s Chapter 8 and not 1983’s The Outsiders. The differences are in the details, of course. In Riverdale, we’ve got the Bulldogs and the Serpents as our gangs (interesting to note Season 2 features the Bulldogs becoming much more ganglike via the [Shirtless] Red and Dark Circles). While the Bulldogs volunteer to lend their time to help Fred on the SoDale project, Moose gets a beatdown wrongfully attributed to the Serpents. Archie ‘n Co then go in search of the Serpent perpetrator at the Whyte Wyrm where they, no shock, all but come to blows. Rather than rehash the same exact plot, instead Riverdale had the rich, shadowy yet looming figure of Hiram Lodge enact the violence upon Moose. One of our first indications that what Riverdale needed wasn’t a civil war between the North and South sides, but perhaps to instead come together to fight a common enemy.
Stepfords of Riverdale: The Stepford Wives is both a 1972 book and 1975/2004 film which takes places in a seemingly perfect town with perfect wives who lack individual thought, emotion, or unique fashion sense. Being “Stepford” has come to be synonymous with over-the-top creepy levels of perfection. At the season’s start, we actually get the double whammy of the Coopers AND the town emitting these perceived levels of perfection, and as the season progresses, it turns out that neither is true.
Tumblr media
Archie’s a comic book fanboy: If you take a look at Archie’s room in Season 1 (or the screenshots I’ve got here), there are DC posters littering Archie’s walls. And the game Jughead and Archie are playing this episode? It’s DC Universe.
War is Hell: Sure, “War is hell” is a statement made famous by William Sherman during the Civil War. However, given that Archie is Archie, into comic books, and this was said while playing a video game (different universe though), I find it more likely that Archie was referencing the Marvel comic series titled War is Hell which ran from 1973-1975 with a short revival in 2008. This comic series was firmly planted in the genres of war and horror. Extra fun fact: A gigantic Marvel collection of Chris Claremont’s work, Marvel Universe, featuring 7 volumes of War is Hell was published in August 2017. Very close to the time this conversation would have taken place.
Hell is other People: Jughead cites Jean-Paul Sartre’s iconic line from the closing of his 1943 play, No Exit. Sartre himself said, “I mean that if relations with someone else are twisted, vitiated, then that other person can only be hell.” Hell is other people in the sense that we’re permanently at the mercy of others judgement and how that makes one uncomfortable unless truly alone. Could be there be a more perfect Archie/Jughead exchange than Archie coming out with some comic goodness and Jughead replying with ruminations on the judgemental nature of other people? This writer doesn’t think so.
Tumblr media
Family Photos IRL: The photos on the Andrews’ fridge of a young Archie are real life pictures of a young KJ Apa.
“We’re bruiser studs, Mr. Andrews”: Moose describes himself and fellow teens (sans Jughead) as “bruiser studs.” Basically, “we’re strong tough guys who can take care of ourselves,” and then he promptly gets the crap kicked out of him. Whoops.
Wyrm: Given that the Whyte Wyrm is Serpent hangout No.1, let’s take “wyrm” a bit back to its origin. Wyrms have been described as type of dragon and more importantly for our purposes, enormous, traditionally wingless serpents.
Ouroboros: The most common image on the back of Serpent jackets is an ouroboros. An ouroboros is a serpent, or dragon, depicted eating its own tail. The word is Greek in origin with “oura” meaning tail and “boros” meaning eating. That’s right! Ouroboros legitimately means “one who eats the tail.”  The ouroboros represents a life cycle - life, death, and rebirth. Creation through destruction.
Tumblr media
Bonus Hilarity: The Jones’ trailer has a Billy Big Mouth Bass hanging on the wall. Even Jughead & Betty are confused by it.

I saw this post by @astropixie about how it’d be nice to review fics on AO3 as you read. A little while back, because I was so in awe of the Clexa fic writers, I made this userscript (can install on Firefox by using Greasemonkey and on Chrome by using Tampermonkey) so that I could do just that. It doesn’t have the wattpad or soundcloud functionality, it’s just a little thing added on to a page, not something supported by the site itself, but it’s better than nothing.
The userscript is available here: http://pastebin.com/vYBCYWu4

Sorry everyone! Lost track of time! Also losing ideas for these, so a reminder that submissions are always greatly appreciated either here or here
Anyways, welcome to lesson 4: speech!
I believe this topic has been covered on the discord server, but I have not looked into it to prevent plagiarism.
The basics are that you put speech in quotation marks. You also have to start a new paragraph for each person who is speaking, which may seem tedious but is meant to avoid confusion over who is speaking. If it looks awkward, I recommend just writing it out and then going back to fix mistakes like making sure it’s clear who is speaking. You may need a beta reader to double check that it’s clear, especially since as a writer you may be biased because you already know who is supposed to be talking.
It can get pretty redundant so try to mix up your word choices so it’s not “Blah blah blah,” said Name. Here’s a helpful list for alternatives for said, but coming up for alternatives for names (especially when pronouns are not useful, such as when there are two characters of the same gender talking): http://www.spwickstrom.com/said/
Other important things to keep in mind are punctuation.
“Not fair!”
Sometimes there’s enough context to just have a sentence in quotation marks and call it a day.
“I live on Elm Street,” stated Betty Cooper.
When you follow speech, you use a comma instead of a period, as the information about who is speaking is consider a part of the same sentence. If you aren’t using a period, then a question mark or exclamation point by itself is fine also.
“I live on Elm Street,” stated Betty Cooper, “in the house next to Archie’s.”
Here we have the same thing, but with more information. Sometimes you’ll interrupt a sentence to give that information and if they’re related then you keep them together like this. If it’s a new sentence, it’s not split and will be done with the second part capitalized instead.
That’s all I can think of today, but feel free to let me know if I missed anything major. I’ll probably do another lesson on speech in the future.

Our last workshop was on characterization, and had a lot of incredible information! This week’s workshop will be on writing smut (18+ please)! Kayla ( @lilibug–xx ) will be leading the discussion and sharing advice she has on the subject.
We want to make sure all of your questions are answered, so please submit anything you’d like addressed to either Lyss ( @bettscoopr ) or K ( @bugggghead ), OR feel free to drop them in this Google doc.
JOIN US ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH FOR THIS HELPFUL RESOURCE ON WRITING SMUT! THE DISCUSSION WILL RUN FOR ONE HOUR AND BEGINS AT 10AM PST (1PM EST & 6PM BST).
Here’s how it’ll work. We’ll all gather in the brand new #18plus-writing-workshops-live channel on Discord (no discussion in there, please!) at a predetermined time (10am PST, 1pm EST, 6pm BST), and we’ll give the leader the floor for about 30 minutes to discuss tips, examples, and to address the pre-submitted questions.
Feel free to message us on Tumblr or Discord with any questions. Happy writing, and hope to see you over on Discord!

ISO: Writing Partner
Hello all! As some of you now I have been battling a lot of writer’s block lately and it’s been very frustrating. I’d like to ask if anyone is interested in proofreading, collaborating, brainstorming and generally just bouncing ideas off one another. This could lead to future projects that we write together or just support for one another’s works.
HMU!

Welcome to lesson 3!
Common spelling mistakes.
So we have the basic your vs you’re or their, there, they’re. It’s vs its. Stuff that is often taught early on but a lot of people forget over time (side note: a lot is another one as quite a few people spell it alot). So your and their are possessive pronouns which means you are talking about things that people own or otherwise poses. “Hey Jughead, I like your crown beanie.” “We should go to Pop’s, their milkshakes are the best.” Its is also a possessive pronoun as opposed to it’s which is a contraction of “it is”. This can be confusing because possessive pronouns with names involve apostrophe s (eg: Jughead’s treehouse) so it would stand to reason that it’s is just following this rule. Unfortunately, the English language doesn’t always follow rules and does not agree with that sentiment.
Like it’s is a contraction of it is, you’re is a contraction of you are. Think of that apostrophe as the glue holding the shortened words together and if the sentence works just as well with “you are” then you’re is the spelling you’re going for. Same goes with they’re. They are going to Pop’s. They’re going to Pop’s.
There is a place. Over there, for example. Your character might also say “there there” in comfort, though the reasons why people do this is a bit convoluted (you’re welcome to fall down the google rabbit hole if you’re curious).
There is also then and than. Simple, then is in relation to time. Betty and Jughead kissed for the first time and then Betty had an epiphany about the car Polly had mentioned. Than is a comparison word. Betty is taller than Veronica. We went to the Whyte Wyrm and then Pop’s because milkshakes are better than beer.
To go back to contractions, another common spelling mistake (and admittedly, one that I have strong personal feelings about and it brings me out of that immersive state when I come across it, but it’s okay if you’ve made this mistake before) we have should of. That’s not a contraction, right? You’re right. It also doesn’t make sense according to the English language. Unfortunately, could have is not commonly used it conversation. Could’ve, the contraction, is infinitely more popular and if you’re mostly hearing it out loud, it does sound suspiciously like could of. It’s not though. Side note: Please do not check out the definition of “could of” in urban dictionary as it is quite rude.
That’s all I can think of today, but feel free to submit more ideas for next time! If you don’t help me out, I have to come up ideas all by myself.

PS: For those who are in the discord, or who are interested in the discord, there are further resources available through channels writing 101 and the weekly writing workshops (live) that are announced regularly. If you need further resources, these are heavily recommended, though our blog is always one ask away as well.

“This is your daily, friendly reminder to use commas instead of periods during the dialogue of your story,” she said with a smile.
