Tour the site of the Great Pullman Strike on its 125th anniversary
Labor history tends to get short shrift in history books.
The Pullman National Monument Preservation Society, created by Barack Obama’s presidential proclamation in 2015, is trying to change that. During the Great Pullman Strike’s 125th anniversary, the group is giving guided tours each month through October.
Before it became a Chicago neighborhood, Pullman was seen by outsiders as “The World’s Most Perfect Town.” It was conceived as a utopian company town where industrialist George Pullman built beautiful brick houses for his workers, schools, parks, a library, a theater, and the Midwest’s first indoor shopping mall. It was conceived as an idyllic alternative to the slums of the city of Chicago.
But Pullman governed with a heavy hand and workers living there were chafed by his strict rules governing every part of their social and economic lives. Liquor was banned and no one had the right to vote. Finally, after an economic crisis in 1893 prompted the boss to lower wages by 25 percent while raising rents, thousands walked out of Pullman’s factories—some of whom were starving.
The downtrodden workers gained the help of iconic labor leader Eugene Debs’ American Railroad Union and the strike snowballed into a two-month-long nationwide rebellion in 1894 that historian Jill Lepore has called “one of the single biggest labor actions in American history.”
An original Pullman building
Ryan Smith
The boycott froze the railroads for more than a month and eventually stopped the delivery of U.S. mail, which led President Grover Cleveland to deploy federal troops to Chicago to break the strike. They did so violently; with 26 civilians killed before the labor stoppage ended on August 2, 1894. Debs became a populist hero while jailed for his role in the Pullman Strike. He later founded the Socialist Party and ran for president four times, earning a million votes in 1912.
In 1898, the Illinois State Supreme Court broke up Pullman’s company town. The next year it was annexed by the city of Chicago.
The 2.5-hour walking tour of Pullman is designed to give visitors a sense of what it was like in 1894. Many of the red-brick structures still exist: from George Pullman’s upscale hotel to to the massive factory clocktower to dozens of houses—many of which are currently occupied. The tour also describes the poor tenements house of “Poverty Row,” (now the site of an artist loft development) and the former outskirts of “Bumtown” where workers secretly planned the strike.
The next tour is scheduled for July 13 at noon. Admission is $25, and each ticket includes post-tour reception and dessert.

MVP Attitude: Kris Bryant Still Willing to Move Around to Help the Team
Kris Bryant Revenge SZN is in effect. Talked crap about him last year while he was hurt? Dinger in your face. Spat on his production was he was trying to play through his injury? Homer in your salad. Dumped on his ability to get over his shoulder injury? Tank in your chops.
Bryant was made aware of the doubters over the offseason, and as he got well and started hitting – normally and strongly – he used it as motivation to set up a comeback this year. Bet against him at your own risk.
But even as Bryant put in the work to getting his shoulder and swing back into MVP form at the plate, it’s not like he’s going to stop being a guy who just wants to help his team win. Regardless of his focus at crushing all fools at the plate, Bryant is still willing to do what is needed in the field.
Bryant, 27, actually saw more time in the outfield in his injury-shortened 2018 season than he did in 2017, splitting 164 innings just about equally between left and right field (he also saw 13 innings at first base), while manning third base for 712 innings. The defensive ratings hated him in the outfield last year after loving him there in years prior, which is either legit, or just the product of tiny samples, opportunities, and defensive positioning. Me? I wouldn’t put too much into a partial single year like that, especially when it conflicts with the eye test – which says, “Yeah, Bryant’s basically fine in a corner outfield spot” – and when he was playing through an injury (never know how that impacts a guy).
Bryant will see the vast majority of his time at third base again this year, but, with corner outfielders who both bat lefty with strong platoon splits, it’s not hard to imagine there being games where the Cubs might want to get an extra righty into the mix, and use Bryant’s ability to swing out into the outfield to accomplish it.
And despite being an MVP with an eye on revenge, Bryant is more than willing to do what his team needs.

Hockey Pucks?
This is about the dumbest idea ever:
To prepare for an active shooter, faculty and students at Oakland University are arming themselves — with hockey pucks. The idea of using the quirky self-defense tool grew out of a training session Police Chief Mark Gordon led in March for faculty members on what they should do if a gunman enters their classroom.
A participant asked what people could bring to campus to be better prepared in case they need to fight back. The university has a no-weapons policy.
Gordon's advice? Be ready to throw something — anything — that could distract a shooter, even a hockey puck, as a last resort if fleeing or hiding aren't an option. "It was just kind of a spur-of-the-moment idea that seemed to have some merit to it and it kind of caught on," Gordon said.
A regular schmo can throw a fastball at about 40 to 50 MPH. Inaccurately. And they forgot the most important piece of equipment:
That would make it quicker....and you could use the stick as a weapon afterwards.

S&P downgrades sales tax-backed Build Illinois bonds
* S&P…
S&P Global Ratings lowered its ratings on Illinois’ Build Illinois senior- and junior-lien sales tax bonds to ‘BBB’ from ‘AA-’ upon the implementation of our recently released priority-lien tax revenue debt criteria. The outlook is stable.
“The downgrade reflects our view of the state’s general creditworthiness, which, under the new criteria, limits the final ratings on priority-lien tax revenue debt,” said S&P Global Ratings credit analyst Gabriel Petek. Our priority-lien criteria takes into account both the strength and stability of the pledged revenues, as well as the general credit quality of the obligor where taxes are distributed and/or collected, in this case, the state of Illinois.
The ratings reflect what we view as Illinois’:
• Deep and diverse economic base and above-average income levels supporting sales tax collections; • Very strong debt service coverage; and • Strong credit structure that we believe largely insulates bondholders from economic and revenue volatility, with an additional bonds test that significantly constrains future leverage.
Offsetting these strengths, in our view, is the state’s general credit quality (general obligation [GO] rating BBB-/Stable). To date, the Build Illinois bond program’s authorizing legislation has restricted its use to financing capital and infrastructure projects. While this remained the case even throughout the state’s two-year budget impasse, future legislatures could enact laws broadening the program’s allowable uses. In our view, the inability to prohibit future lawmakers from taking such action, combined with the state’s unresolved fiscal imbalances, links the credit quality of the Build Illinois sales tax revenue bonds to the state’s general creditworthiness. Therefore, the rating on the Build Illinois bonds is constrained from going higher unless we raise the state GO rating. […]
The downgrade affects $2.27 billion in existing Build Illinois sales tax bonds and the state’s recent issuance of $250 million of Build Illinois sales tax bonds. The junior-lien bonds are subordinate in the flow of funds to the senior-lien bonds outstanding, but we have assigned the same ratings to bonds of both liens due to the similar credit structure, strong bond protections against dilution of coverage by additional debt, and very strong debt service coverage from the pledged sales tax revenues levied statewide.
This is a bit nuts, if you ask me. They’re backed up by sales taxes, nobody has ever talked about using that bond program for anything other than capital and infrastructure projects and bonds get paid first under Illinois law.

Essex on the Park Preps for Spring Completion
Essex on the Park is almost ready for occupancy (via Curbed):
After nearly two-years of construction, Chicago’s Essex on the Park tower is starting to sign leases for its 479 apartment units on its way to an anticipated spring completion.
The 56-story South Loop high-rise broke ground in early 2017. The project from developers Oxford Capital Group and Quadrum Global and Chicago-based Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture (HPA) replaces an unremarkable parking garage at 808 S. Michigan Avenue with a hard-to-ignore skyscraper wrapped in green-tinted glass.
Building amenities include a dramatic four-story winter garden with an indoor pool overlooking Grant Park, an outdoor patio with grilling stations, a fitness center with an indoor/outdoor yoga studio, a party room, cocktail lounge, game room, and a private conference room.
While the architecture of the building doesn't do much for us, the winter garden is one of the cooler concepts we've seen (judging by the pic above).
Regardless if you're interested in living in this building, there are some other amenities that (presumably) will be open to the community:
Additionally, residents will have access to all of the services of the adjacent Hotel Essex. Previously known as the Essex Inn, the renovated hotel will offer a new restaurant and retractable-walled elevated bar when it opens later this year.

Jon Lester is headed to the injured list
Jon Lester suffered a hamstring injury running the bases Monday and though he didn’t think it was serious, apparently, it is:
Remembering that 10 days is now the minimum IL stay (it’s going back to 15 days for pitchers next year), perhaps Lester misses only one start, since the Cubs have a couple of off days over the next couple of weeks.
There’s no word on who would take his next start. It could be Tyler Chatwood, or the Cubs could simply skip his turn in the rotation with the off days (and with potential postponements the next day or two).
I’m going to use this article as another opportunity to plug for the designated hitter. While it was certainly fun to see Lester drive in a run and later slide into the plate to score one, was it really worth it to see him now have to rehab a hamstring injury? Lester had been the Cubs’ most consistent starter through the season’s first 10 games and losing him is a blow to the pitching staff that shouldn’t be necessary.
DH in the NL. Now. It’s way past time.

Why Cubs feel a responsibility to not immediately cast aside Addison Russell
Why Cubs feel a responsibility to not immediately cast aside Addison Russell originally appeared on nbcsportschicago.com
CARLSBAD, Calif. - The Cubs still haven't made a determination on what to do with embattled shortstop Addison Russell.
It's now been more than a month since the Cubs' season abruptly ended and Russell was dealt a 40-game suspension by Major League Baseball for domestic violence.
Many fans would prefer the Cubs just get rid of Russell and move on, but it's not that simple for Theo Epstein and Co.
Once MLB's investigation into Melisa Reidy-Russell's allegations was completed in early October, the Cubs were then able to talk with Russell in detail and Epstein spoke directly to both the young shortstop and his ex-wife.
"I think we have an obligation to speak to everyone involved in the situation and to really engage with Addison," Epstein said Monday at the MLB GM meetings in Southern California. "This incident happened on our watch - he was one of our players and he's gonna serve his discipline for his behavior. Domestic violence is everyone's problem and this did happen on our watch and we have to be part of the solution.
"For us, it means prevention. It means trying to do everything we can as an organization to make sure this never happens again, so having everyone who interfaces with the players and their families trained professionally for detection and awareness and intervention. It's impossible to say we're gonna create an organization where there's never another episode of domestic violence ever again, but that has to be the goal and we're taking steps in that regard.
"Part of the solution also means - with respect to Addison - discipline and he's been handed his discipline and will serve it. I also think part of the solution *can* possibly include rehabilitation and reformation and taking steps to examine whether the individual is worth investment so he can grow. And so that this never happens again with him.
"So we're in that process. We have a robust mental skills department and - I don't want to get into specifics - but we're very engaged with Addy in trying to verify that he's serious about self-improvement and adding more stability to his life and to get to a point where we're confident something like this will never happen again.
"Everything remains an open question. We haven't made any determinations. The only determination we've made is that we need to be part of the solution, both from an organizational standpoint and in supporting the discipline and supporting and exploring a possible road to rehabilitation and improvement."
As part of the suspension, the league mandated Russell enter a treatment program and that process is still ongoing, Epstein said.
The investigation concluded the day after the Cubs season ended and Russell's suspension was announced mere minutes before Epstein's end-of-the-year press conference, where he stated the importance of the organization providing support for both Russell and his ex-wife.
Epstein and the Cubs feel a responsibility to be a part of the solution with regards to domestic violence even beyond this situation and are hoping to learn and instill better practices and procedures moving forward to support the player and his family.
They also feel a responsibility to support Russell and not just immediately cast him aside.
That's not to say Russell will absolutely be wearing a Cubs uniform in 2019, but there is a real possibility of a reunion - which likely would be an unpopular decision among the fanbase.
"Look, this happened on our watch and it's not like we signed a minor-league free agent and he demonstrated this behavior a month in and then you move on from him," Epstein said. "This is somebody who we acquired in Double-A and he grew up in large part in our farm system, too. And especially with a high-school kid, you're a big part of a player's development.
"We take credit when players grow up and experience great success on the field and off the field and we feel proud of being a part of that and playing a small role in that and providing the right kind of environment for that. So when a player has something in their life that goes the other direction or does something that you're not proud of, does that mean you should automatically cut bait and move on and have it be somebody else's problem or maybe just society's problem?
Story Continues
"Or do you explore the possibility of staying connected with that player with the hope of rehabilitation, including a lot of verification along the way. I think these are difficult things to wrestle with, but I'm not so sure the answer is simply to cast the player aside and hope that someone else performs that work or that that work take place at all. That's how I feel about it."
The Cubs have until Nov. 30 to decide whether they will tender a contract to Russell, who is under team control for another three seasons and would go into his second year of arbitration if offered a contract.
He has already served 12 games of the 40-game suspension, meaning he would miss at least the first month of 2019 regardless of what uniform he is wearing - if he's even with a team at all.

On Obey Exploded View keep you following their industrial-influenced noise from a distance
Exploded View write many components of their songs to sound as though they’re falling away at a far distance. The trio’s sparse rhythms and fluttering electronics often melt so deep into the backgrounds of their tracks that you feel left with no other choice but to try and follow their postpunk- and industrial-influenced noise down whichever rabbit holes they’ve fallen into. Thankfully, there’s the limber voice of Annika Henderson—which sounds half rapturous, half mad—to tentatively guide you through the switchbacks. On their new full-length, September’s Obey (Sacred Bones), Exploded View blend a soaring, humming single such as “Sleepers” with a drilling, propulsive track such as closer “Rant” without losing their focus on designing a soundscape that simultaneously comes across like it’s on fire and in bloom. Good luck trying to find your way out of their explorations—though you might never want to leave.   v

Chicago Bears turn to golf, implement 'Augusta silence' in search for new kicker
The Chicago Bears have been working this offseason to replace Cody Parkey, though haven’t appeared to make much progress.
So amid the search for a new kicker, the team is now turning to golf for help.
[Join or create a 2019 Yahoo Fantasy Football league for free today]
The Bears have implemented “Augusta silence” every time a field goal is attempted during OTAs — a practice of complete silence often seen before every shot at Augusta National during the Masters each year. That, special teams coordinator Chris Tabor said on Wednesday, has provided an unusual atmosphere on the field.
"No one talks," Tabor said, via ESPN. "Obviously we're doing the 'Augusta silence' [for a reason]. That's been awesome. I am used to people yelling at me. You know, I'm used to, I mean my daughters and my wife will yell at me, so I'm used to it. But when it's quiet out there it is, it is a different feeling.”
Parkey missed eight kicks last season in Chicago, most notably the infamous 43-yard blocked double-doink during their wild-card playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles in January, which resulted in Parkey essentially being run out of the city in the aftermath of the miss.
The Bears brought in eight different kickers to their mini-camp this spring, though even that got off to a rough start. Last month, Bears coach Matt Nagy brought all eight kickers in to attempt a 43-yard field goal — the same distance Parkey missed from at Soldier Field — in front of the whole team. Combined, they went just 2-of-8.
Now, according to ESPN, Chicago has cut that group down to just three guys: Chris Blewitt, Elliott Fry and former Oakland Raiders kicker Eddy Pineiro.
"We're creating as much pressure as we can on these guys," Nagy said, via ESPN. "We're getting the 'Augusta silence' out here with the team and that's eerie."
Nagy, though, still isn’t sure which kickers will accompany the team to training camp next month.
"Honestly, we have not figured that out yet," Nagy said, via ESPN. "We wanted to get through, get right into the end of minicamp and just kind of get back collectively and talk about it, collaborate. But we're kind of up in the air. We're trying to let this thing play out. The more kicks we have, the more of a library we have."

Vice District Brewing Evicted from 1454 S. Michigan
We've received some emails from a variety of readers and Eater also has an blurb:
Meanwhile, for the second time in two weeks, the city has shut down a bar in the South Loop. On Tuesday a green sticker from the Office of the Sheriff of Cook County appeared on the window of Vice District Brewing’s taproom at 1454 S. Michigan Avenue announcing that “all persons have been evicted from the premises.” Ownership subsequently announced on its Facebook page that it “will be closed tonight,” prompting a user to respond with a photo of the eviction notice and ask “Closed forever? What’s going on? Please say it ain’t so.. I never got a chance to stop in!” Ownership, who opened a second location in September 2018 in suburban Homewood, has not responded to a request for comment.
We had some good times and good beers at Vice and are sorry to see them go.  We will see what's next for this spot.

Anthony Rizzo Goes OPPO to Keep Up His Hot Streak (VIDEO)
Fresh off a very productive weekend at the plate, Anthony Rizzo came into tonight’s game against the Dodgers reasonably “hot.”
Can we say he’s just hot now?
Nicely incorporating the Game of Thrones Night there, #AtCubs.
Anthony Rizzo doesn’t hit a lot of opposite field shots by nature, so that was a fun one to see. In most parks, that probably doesn’t go out, but it probably does still go for two bases, as Rizzo scalded it.
Rizzo’s up-to-the-moment slash line is now at .205/.370/.425, good for a 116 wRC+.

Being a freelancer / working from home, you’d think I’m just on my computer in my pajamas all day, right? Well, you’re not totally wrong BUT it does give me the flexibility to be out and about (which I am quite often). Whether I’m running errands, heading to a meeting, or going out for the night, there’s a 90% chance I’ll be in sneakers (and as of late, the Nike Air Max 270s).
There’s also an 85% chance I’ll be in some other Nike gear as I have fully adopted Athleisure. It’s not a trend..it’s actually my life. If you’ve been following me since the beginning (or at least for a while now) I’m sure you’ve seen how much my style has changed. I almost always wore heels, I wouldn’t be caught dead in athletic clothes outside the gym…and look at me now!
I’m grateful for brands like Nike making athletic clothes actually stylish, so I can be super comfortable, look cute, go to the gym, not go to the gym…wherever life takes me, it’s now taking me in my 270s 😊
With Air Max Day coming up (3/26!) I wanted to share a sort of day in the life / some of my favorite spots around Chicago wearing my new favorite kicks.
Nike took a little bit of DNA from multiple iconic Air Max silhouettes and remixed them to make the 270 pop in a modern and fun way. Pulling from the Air Max 180 and Air Max 93 specifically, these are the first Air Max’s that are strictly lifestyle (meaning not meant to be worked out in, but still designed with performance in mind…I’ve already walked miles in mine). And with the heel being its highest ever, it wouldn’t make much sense to run a marathon in them anyway (but with how comfortable these are, I may just consider it!) It’s funny that I absolutely hated that wedge sneaker trend a while back (sorry Isabel Marant), yet I can’t get enough of the 270s. Leave it to Nike to make a sneaker with height look badass.
I spend most days in a leggings + sweatshirt + sneakers combo. If I’m not at home during the day, I’m typically running errands, walking my dogs and / or working out. I’ve learned to really value wellness and self-care as of late (it takes more than just exercising a few days a week!) I enjoy meditating or trying a new “healthy activity.” My current fave (as you know from Winter Vibes) is Aire (pun not intended 😄). I WISH being submerged in those pools was something I did on the daily but it’s something I love and brings me a whole new level of relaxation. It’s important to unwind every once in a while and this is the perfect place to do it.
I couldn’t help but include a little Jim Bachor in here. He’s known for his “pothole art” (who knew a pothole could be so…ramen?) The fact that he has a piece in the Nike store on Michigan Avenue and I just can’t help but smile (and take a shoefie) every time I see one of his mosaics…this just had to happen.
Once I get out of my leggings, I’ll likely just switch to jeans (still in a  sweatshirt though…always 😝). I often take meetings at coffee shops and although I’d more likely be at Caffe Streets, I do love Metric roasters on Fulton (same owners, same great coffee!)
I am a coffee snob and I’m not going to apologize for it. BUT both locations do a mean iced matcha latte with oat milk. I never order milky drinks (whether it’s dairy or non-dairy milk — I just prefer coffee and tea straight up) but this is one of my very few exceptions. It’s a nice little tasty caffeinated treat!
Same outfit. Different outing. I’m not messing around when I say I live in a versatile wardrobe — because I’m taking this exact outfit to get my groove on.
I love seeing live music (Concord, Metro, Lincoln Hall, you name it) and the last few shows I’ve been to, I’ve worn this exact outfit (minus the jacket…needed a heavier coat IRL, unfortunately). Let me tell you from experience…the 270s make a great dancing shoe 💃.
This last look was a little different for me. I’m always in jeans or leggings — a sneaker’s best friend. When I wear culottes, however, I usually go for loafers or heels. So I decided that I’m no longer going to wear anything unless I can wear my 270s with it (and I do love these pants) so I made them happen with a leather jacket, bodysuit and of course, some Air Max’s.
I have to say, I’m pretty happy with the results (if I do say so myself). The JC Rivera definitely doesn’t hurt the situation either!
But of course the day isn’t over without some EATS.
Lonesome Rose is my new favorite spot (brunch, drinks, dinner, chill, repeat). It’s super cute on the inside and the food is awesome. The tacos, the corn, the nachos, the queso, the cocktails (!!) Let’s just say I could use a leisurely stroll in my 270s every time I leave there (which I will surely do come summer!)
And there you have it –a few of my favorite things in Chicago wearing one of my favorite brands. You can say it’s a good day!
Which color combo is your favorite? I’ve been wearing the black and pink the most but they’re all so damn good. There’s a ton more on Nike.com (for both men and women…these really look good on everyone!) so get your self a pair just in time for the global celebration of Air Max Day on March 26!
And heads up…starting Thursday (3/22) Nike Chicago will drop all new Air Max 270 styles, as well as Pogo (a dope new boutique in Lincoln Park, also seen here) and the NordstromxNike boutique. So, next time I see you, I hope to see you in some 270s!
Also let me know if it’s insane to own one shoe in four colors because these just might have to happen too (maybe five because these… #sendhelp #sendnike).

Chuck's Daily Check In - 1.15.19
GAME NIGHT FROM LOS ANGELES:
Bulls: (10-33, 5-17 on the road) at Lakers: (23-21, 14-9 at home)
TV: NBC Sports Chicago: Neil Funk and Stacey King. 9:30 CT tip.
RADIO: 670 The Score: Chuck Swirsky, Bill Wennington and Steve Kashul: 9:15 CT pre.
LEADING SCORERS: Bulls: LaVine: 23 ppg. Lakers: Kuzma: 18 ppg. LEADING REBOUNDERS: Bulls: Markkanen: 7 per. Lakers: McGee and Chandler each with 6 per. LEADING ASSISTS: Bulls: Dunn: 6 per. Lakers: Ball: 5 per.
CCI PREVIEW: It’s game four of five on the road as the Bulls take on a LeBron-less Lakers team. Without James in the lineup, the Lakers are 3-7. James has missed the last ten games with a groin injury sustained December 25. Veteran Rajon Rondo has appeared in only 14 games due to a broken right hand. There is a ton of pressure on Head Coach Luke Walton to get the Lakers back on track but in my opinion, Walton is not the issue. He can coach. Period. The Lakers are coming off a deflating home loss to the lowly Cavaliers so look for the Lakers to bring whatever energy they have to Staples tonight. The Lakers like to push the ball and the Bulls will need to get back on defense. Kyle Kuzma is a streaky shooter. He scored 41 points on the Pistons. The following game, Kuzma registered only 11 points, 4-18 fgs. And 0-5 from three point range. On Sunday against the Cavs, Kuzma had a 29-9-4 game. The Lakers are 27th in 3 point shooting at 33%. They are dead last in free throw shooting at 68%. The Bulls are desperate for a win and this is a game they can get to end a seven game losing streak.
Houston 112, Memphis 94. James Harden scored a season-high 57 points. It’s the franchise record 14th time Harden has scored 40 points this season and his eighth in the last 11 games. Harden has 17 straight 30-point games. The last two players to do that 16 times in a row were Kobe in 2003 and Kareem in 1972. These are crazy numbers, folks. Houston’s Clint Capela will be sidelined a reported 4- 6 weeks with a thumb injury.
New Orleans 121, Los Angeles Clippers 117. Anthony Davis 17th career 40-15 game, his fourth this season...amazing. His totals: 46-16-4- 3 steals - 1 block.
Brooklyn 109, Boston 102. D’Angelo Russell scored 18 of his 34 points in the third quarter. The Nets ended a ten game losing streak to Boston. The Celtics have lost three straight on the road.
Charlotte 108, San Antonio 93. Tony Parker returned to San Antonio and scored 8pts and dished out 4 assists. Kemba Walker tossed in 33 points. The Hornets snapped the Spurs seven game home win streak.
Utah 100, Detroit 94. Rudy Gobert with 18 points and 25 rebounds. The Jazz are starting to turn the corner with a favorable home schedule.
Sacramento 115, Portland 107. The Kings go to two games over .500. Sac-Town has won four of its last five games and head out for six straight on the road.
