Tillis was convicted after the body of 31-year-old Joni Lynn Gunter was found on his property, which locals nicknamed the House of Horrors. Police say it's highly likely that Tillis has other victims, and the fact that this young woman might be one is a sad reality.

We belatedly honor #National Moonshine Day (June 2) with records from our inestimable holdings!

During prohibition, moonshine was manufactured not just in the rural Appalachia mountains, but even in the city of Los Angeles! No small feat given that fire is needed to heat the mash so the alcohol can turn into vapor, and the fire can spread rapidly. Just that happened to Sam and Fannie Rosen, and the The National Archives at Riverside shared the story.

When the fire broke out the fire department showed up and found a mooneshine still. They called the police, the police called the Federal Prohibition Agents who got a warrant. Prohibition agent W. J. Mosher reported from the Rosen's home at 1015 ½ Sunset Blvd.: 1 still, three 5 gallon kegs, one 10 gallon keg liquor, one 5 gallon glass jug jackass brandy, 1 ¾ gallon glass jug wine, 1 funnel, and 2 pieces of rubber tubing. 

These pictures were presented as evidence in USA vs. Fannie Rosen and Samuel Rosen. They were convicted of violating the 1919 Prohibition Act, both got six months in jail and a $500 fine. U.S. District Court for the Southern District CA criminal case number 3833).NARA ID 294957.

The historic prison cemetery in Huntsville, Texas, Joe Byrd Cemetery, is the burial place of approximately 3,000 prisoners. Serial killers, Kenneth McDuff and Henry Lee Lucas are buried here due to the fact that nobody wanted to claim their bodies.

Chad's case, its details (all of which follow clinically documented patterns of psychosis rather than patterns of intentional violence or domestic violence) and the loss of life were beyond tragic. Even so, not every person who has killed is a killer. Chad Gurney is a terribly sad, medical exception. He doesn't belong amongst the hashtags and is far from the "cold hearted son of a bitch" that you've so easily labeled him as.

If interested, there are hundreds of research articles you can find on the effects of traumatic brain injuries coupled with undiagnosed schizophrenia. They mostly all find that once treated and diagnosed, violent crimes almost never reoccur because the people who committed them were never evil, only ill.

You may be interested to know that a world renowned forensic psychiatrist combed through Chad's medical records and the details of his case and testified on his behalf. He stated that Chad "didn't stand a chance" of not having what happened happen. You may also not know that even Zoe's mother pleaded to the courts not to sentence Chad to prison.

I tell you this because I see Chad presented here with the likes of people such as Charles Manson and Ted Bundy, neither of which were known to be injured or mentally ill and who both reveled in all they had done. I have seen first hand how horrified Chad is by what happened, and how he will forever be haunted by the memories of something that was mentally and physically beyond his control.

Good evening, I stumbled upon your post about Chad Gurney and, as someone who knew him from childhood and before his accident, and someone who still knows him now, I feel compelled to share some information with you that the media did not. At the time of his crime, Chad was not only suffering from a severe traumatic brain injury, but was also an undiagnosed schizophrenic. This combination often leads to violent crimes, as is documented and still scientifically researched around the world.

Many residents of the rural town of Cokeville, Wyoming, believed that this town was a safe place to raise children. That was until 16 May, 1986, when 43-year-old former town marshal, David Young, and his 47-year-old wife, Doris Young, entered the only elementary school of the town, Cokeville Elementary School, armed with an arsenal of weapons and a gasoline bomb.

They took 136 children and 18 adults hostage inside one classroom. It was Doris who rounded many of the students up under the pretense that they were required for assembly. Many of the children were so young that when they entered the room and saw David standing in the middle of the room armed with weapons and a bomb, they believed the assembly was going to be about weapons. Sadly, they were wrong.

Once everybody was in the classroom, David began to hand out his manifesto which was entitled “Zero Equals Infinity.” Inside this manifesto he wrote how he wanted to reign over intelligent children and was very well aware of the above average achievement scores from Cokeville’s education system. David also sent a copy of this manifesto to President Ronald Reagan and demanded a ransom.

The teachers attempted to keep the young children calm and entertained by playing games and even praying. One child was celebrating his birthday and the class, including the hostage takers, sang him happy birthday. The bomb, which was being held by David, contained a trigger mechanism attached to a shoelace tied around his wrist. He explained he couldn’t make any sudden movements because to this.

After two and a half hours, David gave Doris the bomb as he went to the bathroom. While in the bathroom, Doris suddenly moved her hand, causing the bomb to explode. David burst through the bathroom door after hearing the explosion and saw his wife, writhing in pain. He shot her dead, shot a teacher, John Miller, who was attempting to escape, and then shot himself. Everybody except for David and Doris Young, managed to escape.

After Jeffrey Dahmer was beaten to death in prison, his body was cremated. Before this, however, his brain was removed, setting off one last bitter dispute between his parents. Arguing that her son “always said that if he could be of any help, he wanted to do whatever he could,” Dahmer’s mother petitioned to have the brain donated to science for research into the neurological roots of antisocial behavior. His father, on the other hand, said that he wanted “to put the whole thing behind him,” and was eager to have the organ destroyed. The matter was settled in December 1995 when a judge, citing Dahmer’s own wishes as conveyed in his last will and testament, ordered the brain cremated.

In 2002, Declan Lyons’ body was discovered outside the restaurant he worked - he had been shot through the head. For weeks, the case went unsolved; Lyons was a popular guy and apparently had no enemies. The murder seemed motiveless. 

A month after the discovery, Isaac Turnbaugh, a co-worker of Lyons, admitted that he had killed Lyons after taking mushrooms at a party. He also admitted that he was behind the 9/11 attacks. Unfortunately, this was brought up during his trial and the jury believed that the confession was just the drugs talking and acquitted him.

The case went unsolved until 2011, when, apparently racked with guilt, Turnbaugh handed himself into the police and confessed that he had indeed killed Lyons. Regardless of this, due to “double jeopardy” Turnbaugh cannot be tried for the same crime twice and still remains a free man.

In 1991, 16-year-old Laurie Show became the victim of stalking and harassment by her classmate, Lisa Michelle Lambert. Lambert was enraged that Laurie had briefly dated her boyfriend, Lawrence “Butch” Yunkin, who she was currently expecting a baby with. 

Lambert became obsessively jealous, believing that Laurie was attempting to steal him away from her, when in reality, Laurie wanted nothing to do with him as she had told her mother that he had date raped her while dating. Nevertheless, Lambert continually harassed and threatened Laurie, even showing up to her work. Multiple witnesses reported that Lambert had spoken of her desire to slit Laurie’s throat. 

On 21 December, 1991, Laurie’s mother, Hazel, received a phone call from somebody who she believed was the school counsellor, asking her to come down to the school to talk about the problems between the two girls. In reality, this phone call was a diversion by Lambert to get Hazel out of the house so that Laurie was alone. 

When Hazel returned home later, she found Laurie in a pool of her own blood with “a five-inch gash to the throat; a stab wound that punctured a lung and another that grazed her spine; several wounds to the head; and a number of defensive wounds.” Miraculously she was still alive and managed to tell Hazel that Lambert had done this to her before passing away. 

Lisa Lambert was sentenced to life imprisonment. Lampert’s boyfriend, Lawrence, who had dropped Lambert off at Laurie’s house, was paroled in 2003 after testifying against Lambert.
