the thing about “well-behaved women rarely make history" is that the author, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, didn’t write it about women who would be considered “badly-behaved;“ she wrote it in a book about a midwife, about women who had been largely ignored and erased from history because as a result of their “good behaviour.” So it’s not a “BAD GIRLS DO IT WELL" kind of quote; it’s a reminder to respect and pay attention to the women who go about quietly living their lives.

“Perhaps there are,” Masha said walking to the other woman and cleaning and dressing the wound upon her forehead. “That doesn’t mean you don’t need my help.”
Or that she had been assigned to the neediest patients.
“Sit down before you get too faint to stand.”

“-lets just say i’m familiar with getting hurt.” Was the distant reply at getting caught by the nurse as she tried to bandage her own injury while standing in front of a mirror. Hands easy moved to tape the bandage in place as naturally as she had years ago when she was a nurse herself during the war. Swallowing thickly she ignored the sting of pain from the open wound on her head, she knew she should’ve watched where she was going, but her mind felt pulled in all kinds of different directions lately with all the rumors flying about.
“i nursed for a bit during the war. don’t worry yourself about me. i’m sure there’s others who need more help than i do right now.”

She had promised, but as Masha leaned against her friend, as much for warmth as for affection, she wondered when and if Mariya would ever stop trying to repay her for a small kindness she would do again without hesitation.
“I’d do it again,” Masha said, “and I wouldn’t - I don’t - expect repayment.”
She couldn’t explain it - in a world where so much was transactional, how did you say that you gave freely and without expectation? Real friends were hard enough to find in this world. Being one was the best you could do.
@caughtintherevolution (liked for a mariya aslanov starter!)
“You promised you’d let me buy you tea the next time.” Was the mixed tease and scold as she looped her arm with the nurse and tugged her onwards to the nearest tea house as the temperature began to slowly drop in the cold russian fashion of winter. “Its the least I can do after what you did for me.”
