this information is only for my au reality change and the spinoff series! In this post there will be mentioning of blood and some gruesome actions involving the process of gem link, if you are uncomfortable with blood do not read this!

hey there, im your host CGI and today I will be telling you about the main mechanic of my au, gem link, and how it works. I will also be going over the differences of a gem linked and standard kindergarten gem. As stated before this post will mention blood and the gruesome process of gem link so keep that in mind when reading this. So with that out of the way, lets get into it.

What exactly is gem link?

gem link still is a part of my au's lore even in present times, and it originally started out as a method used to make people immortal, however as time progressed people started to use gem link for other things. Especially when they found out that when someone became a gem they would also gain its powers, so for instance if the person became a sapphire they'd gain future vision and whatever other powers they might have.

There is magic involved with both processes, ancient and modern. the magic used is a special spell known as gem binding or linking, and that spell is casted onto a gem after its been cut to the same size and facet of the gem you want to be. This magic in particular could easily be compared to a vampiric draining spell that stays on the gem until its placed into a persons body. The gem linking/binding spell allows the gem to suck in every drop of blood in the persons body and keep it inside of the gem until the gem is broken or shattered.

If a gem linked gem is shattered the blood inside will ooze out of the broken pieces. however this does not apply to cracked gems unless a large piece is chipped off or the crack reaches the gems core. Gem linked gemstones themselves are slightly stronger and harder to break than normal gems because the magic also helps protect them.

gem linked gems are gems, and have the same powers and abilities of a regular gem born from a kindergarten. However there is a drawback as the gem linked gem has to learn of their new power instead of already knowing how to use it.

also because the person is now a gem they also have a chance of having any problems a regular gem might have, like shattering, cracking and becoming corrupted. They are also susceptible to gem weapons if they did happen to exist by some chance, or if a gem summoned one. kinda like how mec can just casually summon a rejuvenator as her weapon because that was the chosen weapon of the gem she became.

Backstory

In my au, both steven universe, and magic did exist in the past before modern times. Some people who where die hard fans had tried to become their favorite gems, but with little luck. eventually an accident happened which would change how people would preform gem link, and it was gruesome.

People would have the gems already cut how they wanted, usually into the same shape as the gem they wanted to be along with the same facet, this was for better results. Then they'd preform a spell on the gem and strap the person upside down onto a vertical table with a funnel on the bottom. After that theyd place the gem into a bucket and put it under the funnel, the person was now ready for transformation. With everything done they'd cut the persons neck so the blood ran down the table and into the bucket. a few minutes later, theyd reform as a gem.

gem link went on for a while in the past until it was eventually banned due to a gem shortage and also because there where too many wreckless people who where destroying things by using their new powers without learning how to use it first.

because it was the cause of the major gem shortage and the chaos, some of the people retaliated and actually fought against the gems, eventually shattering them in the process.

Present day

well, everyone tried to forget about gem link over time, but it recently started to make a comeback due to rumors and legends. Eventually the people started digging deeper into this mystery and found out that it did in fact exist, but now that they had their suspicion at ease the people tried to make a less brutal way of achieving the link, and they succeeded.

And that is why gem link is a little less brutal nowadays. You still have to have a gem of the same size, cut and color of the gem you want to be along with the gem binding spell. However instead of placing the gem in a container to collect the blood you merely have to carve the persons skin into the shape of the gem and tear the skin off before placing it in the new bodily cavity.

The newer method was made so that theres less of a mess to clean up later because most of the blood stays in the body. This is a much better way than draining the body because not only is the blood fresh, it also stays in the body so the gem can soak up more blood and produce better results. However you unfortunately still have to deal with disposing of the body afterwards so, uhh definitely have that on hand before becoming a gem.

Keep in mind that the gem has to be placed in the same spot And position of the gem you want to be, especially if they have other forms!

Differences between kindergarten and gem linked gems

gem linked gems physical forms can be quite different than a gem that came out of a kindergarten. Let's take the main character, (mec) for example, next to the gem she became (spinel)

right off the bat its obvious that mec is very tall compared to shorter, rounder spinel. Mec has a sharper, slimmer and more unkempt look, which is due to two reasons. Reason one is because she was transformed into spinel against her will by her sister. Reason number two is because deep down mec liked insane spinel but never admitted it because she was afraid to, and as such she ended up becoming her instead.

Ending outcomes may vary depending on gem type and willing ness to transform, so the person may be shorter, taller, skinner, or rounder than the actual gem. this makes gem link unpredictable because there's no telling what will happen, but a nearly perfect linked gem is very rare and no cases of complete gems have ever been seen.

before you ask, yes, gem link can also affect the person mentally too and its actually quite common. People who have a weaker mind can experience mixed memories, personality disorders or even loose themselves entirely. This is due to the gemstone forcing the memories of the gem onto the person all at once causing the previous and current memories to get mixed up. Most of these people would often be driven insane, loose their humanity, or even gain other personalities in the process.

now what about strong minded people? Well, they can still experience mixed memories and insanity, but it isnt as severe. This is more commonly known as memory bleed and it causes memories of the gem to mix in with your current memories. While it may be less severe and fixable with the right resources, it can still happen but its just less common in strong minded people.

power gaps

while we're on the topic of linked and kindergarten gems I'd like to point out the fact that there can be a significant power gap in between the two. Physical strength can be different especially at first, but luckily it is temporary and easily fixed with training. Gems who are too strong or much weaker than their kindergarten counterparts can go through training to regulate their power level. This is most common in new linked gems who are inexperienced.

because each gem is different ability wise, training methods may vary due to this. Gems who are more physical, will go through physical training, and gems who have more mental abilities will go through mental training.

when put into a fight together the kindergarten gems will almost always have the upper hand unless the gem linked gem is skilled enough to defeat them. Of course power isn't always everything in a real battle either.

Familiars

linked gems will sometimes notice someone following them around from time to time and that's normal. These are a type of projection and they are often known as familiars. they are mainly there to help the linked gem with learning their powers, but they can also just be someone to talk to. these projections will look like a different or similar form that the linked gem currently has, which would normally be the gems second favorite form.

Familiars are invisible to normal people and other gems, but if two gems who have different forms of the same gemstone they can see and interact with each others familiars. So they can be interacted with and they can interact back. Oddly enough familiars also seem to be completely solid to the gem they're connected to but nonexistent to other people. Kind of like a ghost in a way.

these familiars also know about the gems powers and can also use them to the fullest extent just like a regular gem would. Because of this they also like to show off a little

Summoned weapons

if a linked gem has a summoned weapon then that will be the automatic default weapon of the gem. if the gem doesn't have a weapon, but has a weapon they chose instead, then that will become their summoned weapon.

an easy example of this would be that we never see spinels true weapon, as she uses her powers most of the time, but she did have a rejuvenator. That rejuvenator qualifies as a weapon of choice because she chose to use it, and as such the gem linked gem who became spinel. Also known as mec automatically has a rejuvenator as her summoned weapon.

if a weapon has a specific ability like destabilization or rejuvenation, the weapons power may vary especially when its first summoned by the gem. The power level also depends on how much the user knows about it, and it includes things such as abilities, handling and maintenance.

For instance, mecs rejuvenator was very weak when she first learned how to summon it but it got stronger the more she learned about it.
