despite my many fantasies about it i just wouldn’t make it in the victorian era. i don’t have it in me. one of my close, ambiguously gay companions would tenderly brush a strand of hair back from my forehead, or hold my hand while rubbing their thumb over the back soothingly in a show of emotional support, or send me a heartfelt, affectionate letter lamenting our time apart and looking forward to our next meeting with dried flowers handpicked and pressed into the paper and i’d just end up sprawled over the nearest couch or draped languidly across my four-poster bed, letter still clutched loosely in one of my limp hands, sighing dramatically and succumbing to fits of weeping at irregular intervals until my concerned family were forced to call on the physician, who would take one look at me and instantly diagnose me with nervous hysteria, and lock me up in the attic of my own house to prevent me from inflicting myself on polite society or, even worse, writing poetry

honestly tho that scene in the incredibles where mr. incredible sees the names of all the old super heroes that used to be his friends / that he knew from Back in the Day and how every one of them has been killed by syndrome is such a chilling scene for so many reasons 

like for one, everyone he knew is dead at this point and has been killed on the same island he’s at now and two, its heartbreaking bc that means that almost every hero wanted to try out being a hero again despite the laws against it and wanted to try and help someone out and relive their glory days, only to be straight up murdered like fuck that scene is just so fuckin intense

if you’re an adult that works with kids of any age do me two quick favors:

learn the symptoms of adhd and autism and their presentation in all genders. you dont have to be an expert, just know a bit about it beyond popular knowledge.

learn to recognize signs a kid is being abused in any way. beyond bruises and black eyes. learn to recognize the fearful apologies and hesitation. do some research.

do me these two favors and save tens of lives.

that’s no exageration either. after teaching my mom basics about mental disorders, she started spotting neurodivergent kids in her classrooms and helped them get help. almost every child she’s helped has been diagnosed with the disorder she predicted and none of them would have been diagnosed at a young age without her help. knowing this stuff matters.

learn. save lives. don’t make kids grow up in fear of their symptoms and family.
