Visiting the Ghats Along the Ganges River in Varanasi, India
Tumblr media
With 15 years of experience in the public schools system in Bedford, NH, including several years as superintendent of schools, Chip McGee now serves as a consultant with Sugar Maple Consulting, providing educational support services ranging from curriculum assessment to analyzing student data. Personally, Chip McGee enjoys traveling and in November of 2018 took a trip to Varanasi, India. Known as the holiest of Hindu rivers, the Ganges River attracts numerous visitors who come to Varanasi. Many come to take a bath in the holy waters of the river and receive purification of their souls. Along the Ganges in Varanasi lie more than 80 ghats, or a series of steps providing access to the river for bathing or worship rituals. Two of these ghats, Harishchandra and Manikarnika, also serve as the exclusive location for the city's cremations. One of the most popular ghats, Dashashwamedh hosts special religious rituals known as Aarti ceremonies. Visitors to the city can view the various ghats by walking along the river, but be prepared to face vendors haggling their wares. Another option for tourists involves taking one of the boat rides down the river offered at dawn.
