Let’s start at the very beginning. A lot of what we learn about Kuroo doesn’t come from him directly, but from Kenma which is very telling. Kenma has known him the longest and the best, but it also shows that there is a deep level of trust and understanding between them. Furudate uses Kenma to further the readers and (in my opinion) Karasuno’s understanding of Nekoma as a whole. Kenma is the first character from Nekoma that we meet and the one closest to Hinata. His understanding of volleyball as a game is a key part of the story as is his ability to watch and decipher people. The Kuroo we are introduced to through Kenma’s POV is vastly different from the one that is part of Nekoma’s public image.
Tumblr media
Kuroo, at the beginning, was a shy kid who had just been thrust into a new house and was asked to make friends with kid he didn’t know. We also learn from Kenma that Kuroo’s family consists of his grandparents and father. No specific mention is made of his mother. Kenma and Kuroo begin to understand one another through games and it’s when volleyball comes into the picture that Kuroo begins to break out of his shell.
Tumblr media
Also note, Kuroo’s thoughts in the above panel, where he says it’s not fun being in a new place. Kenma’s steady presence was probably a relief to Kuroo who had his whole world shifted without much of a choice because he was a child. Also, this is extremely considerate of Kuroo. He never wants to force Kenma to do something he doesn’t want to. He does checkin on him and makes sure he’s okay, but there’s always a line where if he knows Kenma is uninterested, he won’t force him to join. Also the card that Kuroo received from his old teammates is very telling about the kind of person he was. Though he might have had a hard time initially, Kuroo was probably well-liked by his old teams, similar to what we see when he plays for Nekoma. (Also, he’s not from Tokyo originally, which brings up the question as to how far and why he moved?)
One of the most important panels regarding Kuroo’s childhood was his initial meeting with Coach Nekomata.
Tumblr media
Kuroo works so hard, we know that from his time at Nekoma. He’s captain, in a advanced college-prep class, and a starting player. Even when the game seems hard and unending, there are moments where Kuroo is encouraging his team as a whole and I think a lot of that stems from this moment. Nekomata was the first person who taught him that success is fun. Hard work leads to success and you can’t cut corners. In this moment, Nekomata specifically goes out of his way to show a team of middle schoolers that. Lowering the net isn’t about making it easier, it’s about setting a more attainable goal so that when the time came, it didn’t matter how high the net was b/c you already knew what to do.
Then we come to Nekoma Kuroo, whose the type of boy who wakes up at 5am to go on a run and makes sure his path intersects with his best friends house, so he can check on him before school. He’s the type of person who didn’t forget what it’s like to lose and will carry a petty grudge about it even if Yaku barely remembered that game. And his relationship with Tsukki and his teammates extends so far past this reputation as scheming captain.
Tumblr media
Look at Kuroo’s face after Tsukki’s demeaner changed. He hadn’t expected that reaction and he ask him to wait, most likely to apologize as he does to Daichi the next time we see them. Kuroo hadn’t been trying to bait him, he accidently hit on a sore point that Tsukki had. Also, I think he sees some of that same apathy towards volleyball that Kenma had in Tsukki, but unlike Kenma (who truly doesn’t care about the sport unless Hinata is involved) Tsukki was interested in it, but was holding himself back. Kuroo saw that potential and intelligence and went out of his way to help his junior (as he does with Lev and his teammates). During the Nekoma match at Nationals, he tells Tsukki that he was happy he wasn’t wrong, even in the middle of a game, Kuroo found the time to praise his rivals and was not a sore loser at all. He cares about Nekoma deeply and was visibly upset when Yaku got hurt in the match against Nohebi.
ALSO, I made this point with Nohebi, but Kuroo has so much respect for his rival teams and will go out of his way to defend them from slander even when he doesn’t have to.
Tumblr media
And then we circle back to Kenma who tells him thank you for introducing him to volleyball and the look on his face kills me…He’s shocked, but I also think that moment is what really solidified his love for the game, because if he could show just one more person what it was like to play and succeed than he did his job right.
