The Mountain Goats have a lot of sad songs, but the saddest is, by far, Shelved.

am i insane or are there a lot of tmg fans on here who seem to only be able to define jd by his status as a victim of abuse

#he is so much more #it makes me viscerally angry #he is a metal fan #he likes magic the gathering #foremost I think of him as a guy from california #he is an AUTHOR #his books are good #he’s a christian and his music is also about that #i have mega religious trauma and im not Christian but I am religious so I find his religious beliefs really interesting #he’s a funny guy #his twitter shows that he has a great sense of humour #i could go on and on #he is so much more than the catharsis he gives you as a listener #if you are a trauma survivor #if you are an addict or a former addict or ‘its complicated’ #then you know #you are more than that #to be defined by your trauma and addiction is dehumanizing #he is a whole guy #complex and interesting and creative #we are his fans we will not know him #and thats good and okay #we cannot act like we know him because he makes music about deeply sensitive aspects of his life #respect him pls #rant over

its so tender sounding that it kind of broke me.

lakeside view apartment suite, white cedar, until I am whole, in memory of satan, the title track…that damn piano. the HORNS. im just a little guy how am I expected to make do in these conditions. I think I don’t like cry for judas as much as the rest of the album which is why I didn’t listen to it earlier.

everyone wish me luck as I listen thru transcendental youth properly for the first time. hope this doesn’t awaken anything in me

Same As Cash by the Mountain Goats is a great song bc “in your car with your head in your hands at the far end of the Walmart parking lot” hits as a deeply normal and relatable sentence the first time and then the way John hits it on the final repetition makes it feel like the most heart-wrenching possible human experience
