"there are many jews involved in the columbia encampment, and there was even a kabbalat shabbat service and a seder" and "antisemitic things have been chanted at the columbia protests and there's a serious unaddressed (and dismissed) antisemitism problem in the movement" can both be true
like. portraying this as "a group of people who hate jews and want to intimidate and block them" isn't correct, but neither is "it's all a smear and nothing we've ever said or done could ever be antisemitic."
ugh. i just. its so frustrating bc on the one hand you've got people lobbing around the word antisemitism like a club to be used on political opponents, and on the other hand you have people who respond to that be closing their ears to any and every attempt to be called in for antisemitism. and then you get labeled a zionist and not-worth-listening-to for attempting that call-in, so the people who are trying to address it get pushed out
and the jews who remain often feel that as allies it's their duty to squash any internal sense that someone in the movement is antisemitic, believing that it's really their white/jewish fragility or their zionist brainwashing coming up.
the upshot of which is that the antisemitism problem doesn't get resolved when oh my god, it would be so easy. just listen to folks calling you in and learn about antisemitism and how it functions just like allies do for any oppression. empower jews in your space to speak up, with love and firmness. stop assuming every call-in is a threat by bad actors.
like there really are ways to move forward. why can't we take them?

So many of yall will never know what it's like to have your body develop ambiguously without taking HRT and people have no clue what sort of trauma that is
Because it's wrong puberty, but in a way that you will never pass as any binary gender without constant work and effort. It's not having a closet to hide in because you can't look anything like your assigned gender and all your clothes make you stand out more and make you look more and more like a fish trying to be a horse and everyone around you knows. And it started at age 11 for me, years before most people can get their hands on HRT. This was my entire teen life. My childhood.
And it's not because we started HRT, it's all genetics and other factors. It's normal to feel awkward in an in-between stage of HRT if you're aiming for a specific presentation, but intersex people naturally live in that in-between stage while having doctors tell us we're going to die tomorrow and turn into a man in the grave if we don't try radical hair removal treatments that won't be covered by insurance for people like us.
You aren't intersex just bc you've been on HRT. But you might be intersex and not know that's the word for your experience. But you're not intersex just bc you've been on HRT.

i think "it takes a village" shouldn't be just "to raise a child". we should understand it takes a village to do literally everything we do. all day every day. without our communities we would not have drinking water or electricity or clean streets or food or shelter or anything. we cannot do any thing alone. we just can't. and with that comes the fact that you are not alone. you already have a community, seek to be an active part of it, you will feel better. reach out and thank them, they're happy to have you too. i promise. it takes a village to live.

"you shouldn't be antisemetic because you're legitimising Israel when you do" no you shouldn't be antisemetic because it hurts Jews who deserve to not be hurt, like any other human being. you should care about not being antisemetic because it hurts people, and that should be enough for you. why isn't it enough for you?

I love you people who show kindness because "it's what you're supposed to do". I love you people who show kindess because they like being thanked. I love you people who show kindness because it makes them feel good. I love you people who show kindness because they were shown kindness first. I love you people who show kindness for "selfish" reasons. I love you people who show kindness for the "wrong" reasons. I love you people who show kindness in a body that rejects the very notion. Your kindness is not any lesser because of its motivations. The good you added to the world is just as valuable as someone doing it for the "right" reasons. Your effort is seen. Your effort is valued.

doomscrolling is not activism
doomscrolling is not activism
doomscrolling is not activism
"don't look away" is a meaningless phrase. who are you benefiting by inundating yourself with misery porn?
DO something about things you care about. Go to a protest for something you believe in, if you can. Donate money to a cause if you have it to spare. Volunteer your time to help people if you have the energy. Write a letter to your political representatives if that's something you can do. These are meaningful ways to try to make change in the world.
And then? don't feel bad about insulating yourself from horrible news. Don't make yourself look at images that make you feel sick. Don't read endless things that depress you. Because frankly it gets harder to actually do the more you doomscroll. Reading constantly about things you can't change because they're happening at a systemic level or on the other side of the world is paralyzing. It makes you less able to help where you can.
I'm not saying be willfully ignorant. I'm not saying pretend horrible things aren't happening. I'm saying don't destroy your mental health going in-depth and cycling through horror after horror on your phone. I'm saying there is no virtue in making yourself experience other people's traumas because mere awareness is not activism. you inflicting suffering on yourself is not activism.
doomscrolling is literally sapping your energy and focus away from doing anything useful to help other people. you can burn yourself out without ever lifting a finger by exposing yourself to all the bad news in the world and who does that help? no one.

Its fascinating that the way advertizing and apps work right now is simply how computer viruses, adware, spyware, and all manners of malware has ALWAYS worked. Growing up as a teen in the 2000s there used to be a program called Weatherbug that was pretty much considered unthinkable to ever have installed because of the way it knew your location and essentially EVERY adware, spyware, and antivirus software flagged it for removal immediately. It was considered best practice to never install anything. Never install toolbars, mever install anything without consulting a professional or unless you were ad advanced user. I was trained in Comptia A+ for the windows xp era and the best practice as a repair tech was to never allow the customer to install anything themselves if it could be helped.
And now just. Everything does this. Your fucking calculator wants your location data and business ghouls want it to ve illegal to use a simple adblocker because not advertizing to you hurts their feelings.
And now we have generative AI filling the internet witg slop that can have SEO and more ads slapped on top of it? Google is breaking on purpose so you make more searches?
The viruses have won, everything is malware and everything is a scam. To use commercial tech is to be voluntarily mugged
