A new photobook By Jim Jocoy, Order of Appearance.
Spanning three short years from 1977 to 1980, the collection of images is structured in three chapters, vignettes from a one night affair where emotions range from delight to despair, sober to wasted, clear to blurry to half-way-clear-again by morning.
Jocoy’s ability to reveal these touching moments of restless youth allows us to feel empathetic towards the bruised knees that start the book off and then laugh at the comical horror of a sunburst-yellow clownish car turned violently upside down from a accident. As a photographer, Jocoy has an uncanny capacity to make even a car wreck look like the best time ever.
His way of living through this subculture and documenting it is something lovely to see and that becomes even more valuable years later, as a recording of the people, spirit and attitude of the 70′s. It makes you wish you had a time machine to experience that atmosphere yourself.

Looks Behind The Facade Through The Eyes Of Cindy Sherman
Cindy Sherman is one of the greats and i would love for this exhibition to be shown in Holland. In this article I found a new technique to print photographs that is a step further than print on paper, witch is very interesting:
All photographs have been produced through dye sublimation. Heat was used to transfer dye directly onto metal. Through this procedure glass protection for the pictures becomes superfluous. Thus the portraits become even more vital, the impact on the viewer is more direct than it would be if they were immured behind glass.
I’m always bothered by the reflection of glass, when seeing photographs in a gallery setting. This is something I would definitely want to combine with my own photographs in the future.

“Home isn’t something we can expect from a place, but something we find in ourselves.” The second journey that Lufthansa #inspiredby HEIMWEH takes us on, “The Colors of Home”, followers Nepalese jewellery designer Arpana Rayamajhi from her adopted city of New York to her native land of Nepal, in search of the meaning of home.
I like the imagery in this new add because they step outside of conventional visuals and they collaborate with an artist to tapp into the cultural athmosphere of Nepal. I also really like the point they start from: Meaning of home. I think it’s quite poetic and a nice place to make work from.
I’ve been to Nepal a few times because my Mom lives there, and I fell in love with the colors, the peacefull mindset of the people, and because the country is so beautifull and diverse in nature. Read the full article below.

Abstract Nude Photography By Dani Olivier
· JANUARY 04, 2017 ·
PAULA LOU RIEBSCHLÄGER
Since 2007, French photographer Dani Olivier specialized on his very own, experimental approach to nude photography. He uses the female body as a projection surface that displays intricate light patterns and images. His models are nude, they wear a minimum of make up and no striking accessories. Olivier’s pictures stand out because he refuses to edit the original photos. Thus, he creates his pictures at the time of the shoots with no chance of changing anything afterwards. All pictures are taken in front of a black background. In this way the viewer only sees the interplay between the model and the lighting event. The photographer focuses on either figurative or abstract light art, both of which always lead to a surreal composition. So the projected patterns interact with the female bodies combined with their movements. Through his unique artistic concept Olivier established an innovative approach to nude photography. The only things he needs to create his works are a body, a black backdrop, light projectors and a camera.

Lacey’s addictive film for Vogue Japan follows skater Hyojoo Ko through an architectural icon
Words by Jenny Brewer, Tuesday 07 February 2017
When Korean longboarder Hyojoo Ko released an Instagram video earlier this year showing her expertly perform a choreographed skate through Han River Park in Seoul, it earned millions of views the world over. Now director Lacey has worked with production company Rita to create a fashion film for Vogue Japan starring Hyojoo, featuring some of the same moves but in an altogether more awesome environment.
Making for addictive watching, the beautifully produced film follows the boarder as she sinuously glides through the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer’s International Cultural Centre in Asturias, Spain. Seeing the vast urban space devoid of people is both innately satisfying and uncanny, the curves of the white buildings and the concrete landscape creating the perfect set for Hyojoo’s sequence. Flashes of primary colour come from the surroundings, including a wave crest of red fabric that she boards through in a highlight of the film. Set against that backdrop, the colours and textures of the clothing stand centre stage. There’s a subtle element of surrealism too, when multiples of Hyojoo appear, as well as a giant red rolling circle.
The film was directed by Lacey with director of photography Kaname Onoyama, and edited by Kate Owen at Whitehouse Post. It is accompanied by Elderbrook’s song Could. The team at Rita included Michel Teicher, Camila Mendez and Germain Robin, and VFX was by The Mill.
Personal:  I like the fact that vogue takes a girl with character, found from the internet, and makes something adapted to her. The world is changing regarding the mentality of what a model/rolemodel should be. Besides that, using film for this project shows that photography and recording, are coming together smoothly. The styling is great and the images are very joyfull, colorfull and give a longing feeling.

Two stars will merge in 2022 and explode into red fury
Get ready for a big nova event.
By John Wenz                                              Published: Friday, January 6, 2017
STScI
In 2022, there will be a spectacular sky show. Two stars will merge into one, pushing out excess gas into an explosion known as a red nova. At magnitude 2, it will be as bright as Polaris in the sky, and just behind Sirius and Vega in brightness. The collision in the constellation of Cygnus will be visible for up to six months.
That’s pretty impressive. What’s more impressive: we’ve never been able to predict a nova before. But Lawrence Molnar, a professor of astronomy and physics at Calvin College, was able to find a pair of oddly behaving stars giving an indication of what might happen.
The objects, termed KIC 9832227, are currently contact binaries. Contact binary refers to two objects that are so close they are currently touching. The object was discovered by Kepler. The expected outcome is a merger between the two stars that will put on quite a show. Because both are low mass stars, the expected temperature is low, with Molnar terming it a “red nova.”
So how does Molnar know what will happen? After all, as he puts it, it’s “a very specific prediction that can be tested, and a big explosion.” He and his team have an example to look at: V1309 Scorpii. First observed in 2008, astronomers were able to watch the light curve as the event unfolded. First, there were a few “booms” in the sky. Then, a spectacular light show unfolded. Using precovery data, astronomers were able to trace back the evolution from 2001 on, giving a big picture of the decade of progression of the event.

Photographer profile: Anne Barlinckhoff
Barlinckhoff’s focus lies on the exploration of the female body, in which she creates intimate and intense portraits that come from a process of trust with the women she depicts.
To cross her own lines, the artist becomes acquainted with the subjects she captures, resulting in unforced, sexy and fun looking photo shoots. After living in South Africa and traveling through different countries in West Africa her awareness for humans and nature increased more and more. Inspired by love, life and loss, and the beautiful nature of Africa, her images are characterized by a high visual and narrative contrast, as well as a newfound vulnerability. Through her photography, Anne is able to create her own paradise to escape from a world of cruelty and violence. She feels free to drift into a colourful paradise, a dreaming state in which peace and beauty are synonymous with happiness.

Gaetano Pesce is an Italian architect and a leading figure in contemporary industrial design. Mr. Pesce was born in La Spezia in 1939, and he grew up in Padua and Florence. During his 50-year career, Mr. Pesce has worked as an architect, urban planner, and industrial designer. His outlook is considered broad and humanistic, and his work is characterized by an inventive use of color and materials, asserting connections between the individual and society, through art, architecture, and design.
The reason I’m interested in Mr.Pesce’s work, is because it makes me happy. He works with very diverse materials and let’s his fantasy bring him to things that explore our relationship with nature, shapes and colors. It’s playfull and i would love to use his creations in a photoshoot.

Dreams Are Best
Poem by Robert W. Service that touched my heart.
I just think that dreams are best, Just to sit and fancy things; Give your gold no acid test, Try not how your silver rings; Fancy women pure and good, Fancy men upright and true: Fortressed in your solitude, Let Life be a dream to you.
For I think that Thought is all; Truth's a minion of the mind; Love's ideal comes at call; As ye seek so shall ye find. But ye must not seek too far; Things are never what they seem: Let a star be just a star, And a woman -- just a dream.
O you Dreamers, proud and pure, You have gleaned the sweet of life! Golden truths that shall endure Over pain and doubt and strife. I would rather be a fool Living in my Paradise, Than the leader of a school, Sadly sane and weary wise.
O you Cynics with your sneers, Fallen brains and hearts of brass, Tweak me by my foolish ears, Write me down a simple ass! I'll believe the real "you" Is the "you" without a taint; I'll believe each woman too, But a slightly damaged saint.
Yes, I'll smoke my cigarette, Vestured in my garb of dreams, And I'll borrow no regret; All is gold that golden gleams. So I'll charm my solitude With the faith that Life is blest, Brave and noble, bright and good, . . . Oh, I think that dreams are best!

Documentary
Happy People: A year in the Taiga
Edited and narrated by Werner Herzog.
A beautifull film with an admirable main character called Gennady, witch at the end you will have great respect for. The narrating voice is very soothing and the first time I heard it, I thought I was hearing Christoph Waltz. Later I came to find out about this talented documtary maker Werner Herzog.
Like "Grizzly Man," Herzog's documentary, "Happy People: A Year in the Taiga" is mostly built around another filmmaker's priceless footage. Russian videographer Dmitry Yasyukov shot four documentaries about Russian fur trappers in the Siberian Taiga, a remote wilderness larger than the whole of the United States. Herzog happened upon the films at an L.A. friend's house and became as obsessed with their beauty as he once was with Timothy Treadwell's footage of grizzly bears. His authorial signature comes through in the way he edits the material and gives it meaningful context through narration. It's a touching gesture, one filmmaker finding the glory in another's images and making it stronger through his own vision. What Herzog gleans from Yaskyuov's exhaustive material is a simple observation: The men of the Taiga are heroes of rugged individualism.
“They live off the land and are self reliant, truly free,”

Fascinating how he did the typology of gas stations. The way he uses fonts and words, his amount of skill is impressive.

http://www.anothermag.com/art-photography/9322/undercover-documentary-making-in-north-korea
Russian filmmaker Vitaly Mansky risked everything to film a documentary exposing the secret of life in North Korea; the resulting documentary, entitled Under the Sun, is on Netflix now.
The mystery of North Korea has made me wonder about these people living in a sheltered bubble far away. One that I encountered recently was Under the Sun. I’m happy that Vitaly Mansky had the balls to secretly film in between takes. Again after seeing this documentary I wanted to know more about this documentary maker and I found an article that pretty much answers a lot of questions you might want to ask him after watching it.
So I reccomend watching this if you have the same questions. It can bring you closer to people that you think you might never understand due to the brainwash element that NK is famous for. Kind of creepy “day to day” life and it’s a bit slow but I felt so much empathy for the girl.

Puffers, puffers everywhere. A photoshoot by William Ukoh.
http://www.ignant.com/submissions/puffers-by-william-ukoh/
I’ve been seeing them around lately and i’m fascinated by the many types and styles that puffer-coats can come in. A development in day to day fashion that’s worth noticing. An other grab into hip-hop culture from the 90′s that has totally been made mainstream girl-wear, like the bombers skin heads used to wear now made available in pink silk and baby blue at Zara. The transformation and fluidity of a piece of clothing through time can be quite a humorous one.

Catching up with London’s enigmatic photographer Tom Beard.

Via http://www.dazeddigital.com/photography/article/33950/1/catching-up-with-londons-enigmatic-photographer-tom-beard
An interview with British photographer Tom Beard who directed the beautifull clip for FKA twigs, Papi pacify. He discusses how he became a photographer and how he knew he was on the right path. I also like how he reflects on his feelings about camera phones within the world of photography, and how he struggles with the social media aspect of a photographer’s job these days. His analog work is raw and edgy.

The True cost is a documentary that shows the rapidly changing way the fashion industry is changing. It makes you rethink your need for more clothes in contrast to quality clothes. It is in our nature to want more, but when it is catered to us in such a way that it becomes destructive to humanity’s well-being, just to make profit or outrun the paces of the fastest producer, it completely loses the value that we once held so dear. However the collective realisation that this model built on careless production and endless consumption isn’t working, can help change the way we deal with fashion in this modern day. It has to be re-invented or else we might be losing a piece of our identity, but more importantly lives.
