As promised, here’s a new CS fan art… well, lieutenant duckling actually.

Basically Princess Emma running away from a ball (why, you ask? No, idea, I just draw stuff) and ending up in the arms of young Lieutenant Jones.

I kinda like the colors, they’re so light and fresh and I’m not used to light colors, I tend to prefer dark ones.

I love what you said about hook still being cautious about saying I love you - I think people always forget that he was closed off from love to and hurt and alone and self loathing, not just Emma, and that all this is almost as daunting for him as it was for Emma but he just never talks about it.

I 10000% agree. I am constantly flabbergasted by fandom interpretation that Hook is the open one in the Captain Swan dynamic. He isn’t open at all. He is just as closed off as Emma and has just as many walls; his just manifest differently. S2 Hook is a study of using persona and innuendo to push away sensitive topics that is when he doesn’t just straight up shut down. Nowadays he is more likely to make a self-deprecating remark or an overly boastful one but the intent is the same. 

See unlike lots of people on Once Hook is not an over-sharer telling strangers his tragic backstory (Bae being the exception). He considers learning such things an honor because he knows how closely he guards his own heart. In the beginning when he shares personal information it is almost always because the information would be helpful to the person. And when he shares his emotions it is usually forced by the narrative.

Take Echo Cave for example. (xx)

This is Hook’s deepest and darkest secret. Given the option Hook never would have told Emma that he was developing feelings for her. But the show uses the cave to force him to reveal it effectively destroying his wall against his will. And yes once his feelings are out there he doesn’t deny them and he clearly tells Emma his intentions but only because the cave forced a reveal in the first place. 

Look at the rest of the Neverland arc. All his sharing in there is always related to Neal and it’s information he thinks will help Emma in her grief or that will help them in their mission. When Emma tries to talk to him about Liam he shuts her down, fast. He does open up a bit with Charming about Liam and even reveals how his brother died. But again that is a situation where the information had to be shared. It is not shared willingly. 

You can see the wall firmly in place at the end of 3A when Hook says good bye to Emma at the town line. He thinks he is never going to see her again that this is his LAST chance to tell her how he feels. Again this is a forced declaration one he wouldn’t normally make. Even then what does he say? (xx)

I mean it’s an expression of strong emotion but it’s rather vague isn’t it? 

Then we have 3B. I know people get frustrated with Emma in 3B but honestly is Hook being any more forthcoming in their conversations? Does Hook tell Emma that he was lost with out her? That he reverted to his old ways and hates himself for it? Did he tell her that he traded The Jolly Roger to get to her? Does he tell her ANYTHING about his thoughts or feelings while they were away? Nope! Because he has walls! Because he hasn’t shared his emotions with anyone for hundreds of years. Because the last person he shared those things with DIED in his arms.

But who does he tell? Ariel/Zelena in yet another forced declaration.

This isn’t Hook being open. This confession is torn from him. It’s not something he has likely admitted out loud until this moment. It will take another season before he says anything approaching this to Emma. 

Now in the S3 finale we get Hook sharing in a few places. But in both of them it is with the same pattern of opening up in conversations to help others. He is trying to restore Charming’s faith in true love when he confesses that he would go to the end of the world for Emma. He is trying to comfort Emma after Snow’s death when he opens up about Liam’s death. Even at the end when he finally tells Emma about The Jolly Roger it is only because he can’t avoid it. Throughout that scene he looks extremely uncomfortable breaking eye contact and being vague in his language. Because he is uncomfortable revealing just how much Emma means to him. Because he doesn’t know if Emma feels the same. 

Things start to change in S4 because they are letting each other in but we still see Hook holding back from Emma. He is hesitant to include himself in the list of reasons for Emma to stay good. He “hopes” it’s his job to protect her heart. He flat out refuses to talk about Ursula at first (and good for Emma calling him on that). The list goes on but I’ll stop cause this is getting long. But notice that even now, after everything that they have been through, after Emma has said “I love you”, he is still guarded and couches his own declaration in a third person joke. 

Because we have seen Hook declare his feelings for Emma we tend to think of him as open about his emotions but that’s just not true. His walls were just as high and just as thick as Emma’s and I think we should talk more about how wonderful it is that they have started to come down.
