Should My Deck be Raised or At Ground Level?
Whether your new deck will be raised or at ground level depends on a variety of factors such as accessibility, functionality, cost, and maintenance requirements. Oftentimes, the design of the home decides the type of Kansas City deck design, but sometimes the property’s topography must be taken into consideration.
When All Weather Decks is contracted to build an outdoor living space, we account for everything to ensure a homeowner’s dream deck is designed with superior architectural precision that suits their lifestyle.
Many Factors Determine If a Deck is Raised or Built at Ground Level       Deciding to build a raised or ground-level deck isn’t always so cut and dry. There are several details to consider, which is why the expert designers of All Weather Decks are always happy to walk Kansas City homeowners through the specifics, so they understand why their outdoor living space is best built high above the ground or kept level with the lawn.
The following are just some of the factors that determine the height of KC deck designs.
The Home’s Design
The architecture of the home oftentimes determines the design of the deck. For instance, when a house has a walkout basement, the deck must be raised to meet the home’s main living quarters. A raised deck is the ideal KC deck design for this situation because a ground-level deck would result in the homeowner having to walk down a flight of stairs to enjoy their outdoor living space. This situation is not just inconvenient, but also dangerous if the person is carrying something or the steps are wet or icy.
The Topography of the Property
When a home’s property is sloped, it’s smart to go with a raised deck. Not only does this KC deck design accommodate the gradation, but it’s also cost-effective because the homeowner doesn’t have to spend money building up the soil needed for a ground-level deck.
A raised deck is also ideal for homes that overlook water because trucking in the dirt for the build-up might not be physically possible or legally permissible. Furthermore, it goes without saying that a raised outdoor living space provides spectacular scenic views!
Overall Cost
A ground-level deck is much more economically feasible than a raised deck. The best part about ground-level KC deck designs is that they save homeowners money that can be put towards special outdoor living features such as outdoor lighting, a pergola, or a cover that provides protection during inclement weather and keeps the outdoor living space cool during the summer months.
Accessibility Concerns
When a homeowner or those they live with are disabled, a ground-level deck is the best option for obvious reasons. Also, unlike a raised outdoor living space, it’s easy to build a ramp onto a deck that’s built at ground level.
Ease of Maintenance
When a homeowner has the luxury of choosing between a raised deck or one that’s at ground level, it’s important for them to consider the different maintenance requirements. For example, a raised outdoor living space may be difficult to clean because a ladder may be needed. If the deck is constructed of natural wood, twice as much stain or paint will be needed to protect the extra-long support posts. Given these maintenance requirements, it’s best to build a raised deck out of composite material, but doing so will add a significant increase to the overall cost of the project.
Ground-level outdoor living space is fairly easy to maintain; however, inspecting the underside for moisture and insect damage can be challenging. This is also why composite materials are advantageous for ground-level deck construction because composite decking boards aren’t susceptible to rot and wood-destroying organisms.
Is a raised or ground-level deck right for you?
After weighing all the factors mentioned above, you should be able to determine if your outdoor living space is best raised or at ground level. Of course, if your home is designed in such a way that you’re at an impasse, the expert designers of All Weather Decks are happy to help you decide on the best KC deck design for your situation. However, if your budget allows, you could also opt to have the best of both worlds by choosing to build a double-decker deck!
Regardless of whether a raised or ground-level deck is in your future, AWD is honored to be the decking contractor to make it happen. After all, we’re the most trusted decking contractor in the Greater Kansas City area and our designers specialize in custom KC deck designs. We have experience working with a wide variety of home and property styles, so you can depend on us to create a deck design you will love for years to come!

Protect Your Deck from Wood-Destroying Organisms
When you have an awesome Kansas City deck, you want to share it with everyone! Well, maybe not everyone. Natural wood decks can attract unwelcome guests when the right deck care isn’t being performed.
Wood-destroying organisms, or WDOs, include insect species such as termites, wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants, and carpenter bees. While these bugs serve a purpose in the natural environment, they can easily turn dream decks into open-air nightmares. Deck repairs can be costly and this is especially true when they’re a result of insect damage as oftentimes expensive structural supports must be replaced.
Don’t let this happen to your beautiful Kansas City wood deck! Keep forest pests from using it as an all-you-can-eat buffet and honeymoon suite by being proactive about deck care.
Make Your Wooden Deck Unappealing to Wood-eating Insects!
Enjoy a strong, beautiful outdoor living space that’s protected against WDOs by following these deck care maintenance measures.
Keep Your Deck Clean and Dry
Insects are attracted to moist conditions, especially wet wood. Help your decking boards dry faster after rainy weather by using a broom to sweep away excess water and debris. Pay special attention to the corners and shady spots of your deck, including the area around potted plants.
Water will also settle in the knot holes and nail holes of decking boards. To prevent this from happening, fill these spots with an exterior-rated wood filler or epoxy.
Lawn Maintenance and Deck Care Go Hand in Hand
It’s common knowledge that insects love hiding among tall grasses and plants. If you allow a jungle to grow around your deck, you may as well roll out a welcome mat for WDOs. Keeping your landscape under control is one of the best ways to keep insects from making your dream deck their home sweet home.
Bug-proof the Underside of Your Deck
Wood-destroying organisms retain their moisture by avoiding direct sunlight. This is the reason why they are drawn to the shady underside of decks. While it’s difficult to keep them away from this area, you can stop them from burrowing into your deck by installing a layer of composite or plastic beneath the decking boards.
Enclose Your Deck
When an outdoor living space is surrounded by a screen, it’s largely protected from wood-destroying organisms and the stuff that attracts them such as moisture, and yard debris like fallen leaves. Enclosing your deck is the best way to keep it clean and dry so that nature’s wood-eating pests move on to another location.
Never worry about WDOs ever again!
While all the above suggestions work to deter wood-destroying organisms from damaging your natural wood deck, a sure-fire way to protect your outdoor living space is to not build it out of wood.
Constructing a deck using composite wood is the solution to preventing a WDO invasion. Even though it looks like natural wood, it contains no nutritional value for wood-eating insects and doesn’t absorb moisture, so termites and other forest pests are forced to seek a more desirable location.
In addition to not having to worry about WDOs, Kansas City homeowners that have a composite deck love the fact that it doesn’t require nearly as much deck care as a natural wood deck. While it’s still important to keep it clean, water and yard debris don’t need immediate attention since they can’t cause damage to the decking material.
We at All Weather Decks are eager to help you enjoy a gorgeous outdoor living space that doesn’t require the kind of deck care that deters wood-destroying organisms. Being that we are the most trusted deck contractor in the Greater Kansas City area, you can depend on us to design and build a composite deck that will give you years of fun and relaxation because there’s no need for you to be concerned about performing the deck care that deters termites or other wood-eating insects.
When you partner with us, we’ll create your dream deck by taking the time to listen to your ideas. Our skilled designers will then create a few different deck designs that include your wants and needs. Once you’ve fallen in love with one of the blueprints, AWD’s professional builders will break ground while you imagine all the good times you’ll be having with family and friends on your new composite deck that’s free of wood-destroying organisms!

Ways to Design Your Outdoor Living Space Around a Tree
Homeowners with an established landscape may be hesitant about building their dream deck because they don’t want to cut down or damage the beautiful trees and plants they’ve grown to love. This fear is completely understandable. After all, it’s heartbreaking to cut down the gorgeous Japanese tree lilac you planted to commemorate your new home, or the magnificent oak your children climbed when they were young.
Furthermore, you don’t want to disturb the wildlife that calls your backyard ‘home’ by getting rid of trees and plants that birds and pollinators nest in and feed upon.
Another reason for incorporating a tree within the specs of the Kansas City deck building is because its shade will provide relief from the heat throughout the summer months.
Unite Your Deck and Landscape to Create a True Outdoor Living Space  The ultimate Kansas City outdoor living experience is achieved when the creature comforts of home are combined with nature. This is the reason why the experts at All Weather Decks want to help Kansas City homeowners keep their cherished trees by including them in a uniquely designed outdoor living space.
Kansas City deck building is our specialty, and we enjoy helping families make their dream decks a reality. The following ideas offer ideal solutions for building a deck that includes a beloved tree.
A Strategically Designed Deck Will Allow a Tree to Flourish
If you think a beautiful, healthy tree must be cut down to make room for your Kansas City outdoor living plans, think again! AWD’s designers and builders will come together to make sure you can have both.
It doesn’t matter if the tree is fully grown or has years to go until it’s mature, our experts take all factors into consideration, so the tree and deck can coexist without the need for expensive deck modifications in the future. If questions about the tree arise during the design process or construction, you can depend on AWD to consult with an arborist before moving forward to ensure the project is completed successfully.
A Meandering Deck Design with Different Levels Will Flow with the Landscaping
Imagine the aesthetic possibilities of Kansas City outdoor living when you have a curved deck embracing the trees and plants you love as they tower over your outdoor living space and peek out between the railing posts.
Not only will this type of Kansas City deck building allow you to have the outdoor retreat you’ve been fantasizing about, but you will be preserving the trees, flowers, and foliage that help the wildlife in your yard thrive.
You can also incorporate different levels to this deck design to add spatial depth and secluded space for gatherings such as a fire pit.
Give the Tree a Hug with Unique Kansas City Deck Building
Show your favorite tree some love by encircling its trunk with built-in bench seating, or even a pub table!

The Finest Kansas City Outdoor Living Can’t Happen Without Nature
When your Kansas City deck building design involves your favorite tree, you have a unique outdoor living space that is naturally aesthetic and eco-friendly. Your deck will also be cooler in the summer because the tree returns the favor of letting it live by providing much-needed shade.
We at All Weather Decks want to help you accomplish this and keep your Kansas City outdoor living space looking beautiful. This is why we want you to know that building a deck around a tree means that you must perform regular maintenance to make sure your outdoor living space stays in good condition.
If your deck is made of natural wood, be sure to keep it stained or painted. This treatment will keep the decking boards from developing moisture damage, especially since the tree’s shade will cause the water to evaporate much more slowly. You’ll also need to sweep the tree’s leaves off the deck in the fall and clean the deck twice a year to prevent algal growth, which will be an issue as rainstorms will wash algae from the tree’s leaves onto the decking boards.
If you want to have the ultimate dream deck that includes your beloved tree, All Weather Decks is ready to apply expert care to create an outdoor living design that’s naturally beautiful. Our expert designers will help you make an informed decision about the best way to go about building a quality deck around the tree you can’t bear to be without.

What Kind of Damage Can Snow do to a Deck?
According to the National Weather Service, Kansas City, Kansas, sees a total of about 18 inches of snow between October and April with neighboring towns of Olathe and Kirksville getting about two to four inches more per year on average. No matter where you reside in the Greater Kansas City area, it’s important to note that decks built to code and in good condition can hold 40 to 50 pounds per square foot of live load.
To put this into perspective, if a deck is 5 x 10, or 50 square feet, it should be able to handle between 2000 and 2500 pounds of snow if nothing else is on its surfaces such as patio furniture or a grill.
The Cold Hard Truth: When Snow Meets Kansas City Decking Materials
Fortunately, Kansas City decking materials are quite durable. When a deck is built to code and in good structural condition, there’s no need to worry about snow damaging it. This is especially true if your outdoor living space is constructed of composite wood or cedar because these materials resist moisture.
However, if your deck is made of natural wood and it isn’t painted or treated with a sealant, the moisture from snow and ice will cause the wood to swell, warp, and crack. When this happens, the hardware holding the decking boards can shift and pop out of place, which affects the structural integrity of the deck and leads to partial or complete failure.
Mind Your Gutters!
When a deck is damaged or collapses during the winter, it’s usually due to the impact of snow and ice falling from the roof and gutters. To prevent this from happening, make sure your gutters aren’t clogged with autumn leaves and other debris and replace old or faulty gutters before snow threatens. Once the flurries begin to fall, be proactive about brushing the snow from your gutters with a long broom, if possible. Continue doing this until the snow stops to prevent it from accumulating in your gutters and creating ice dams.
Three things homeowners can do to prevent snow from building up in gutters is,
1) have their roof maintained, insulated, and air-circulated,
2) install gutter guards, and
3) apply smart, self-regulating heat tape on gables and gutters.
Ways to Clear Snow and Ice from Your Deck
Shoveling is the absolute worst method for removing snow from decking boards.
Unless the depth of the snow is approaching three and a half feet, do not attempt to remove the snow from your deck with a shovel. The sharp edge of the snow shovel can damage Kansas City decking materials by causing gouges and scraping the paint and sealant from natural wood decking boards making them susceptible to moisture damage.
The best way to remove snow from your outdoor living space is to use a broom to brush the snow off the deck’s surface. However, don’t wait until the snow is six inches deep to begin doing this. It’s more productive if you start sweeping the snow away as soon as it starts accumulating, then continues repeating this activity every half hour to an hour, if possible, until it stops snowing.
If you don’t use your deck during inclement weather, there’s no need to remove the snow and ice because Kansas City decking materials can handle the weight so long as the accumulated amount is under three and a half feet. However, if your deck does get regular foot traffic or you enjoy grilling and chilling. clear a path on your deck, so walking across its surface is less treacherous. You can also purchase salts and ice removers from your local hardware store that are safe to use on composite and natural wood decks.
Winter Weather is No Match for Kansas City Decking Materials!
It doesn’t matter if your deck is made of composite, cedar, or natural wood, you have nothing to fear when snow and ice visit Kansas City.
All Weather Decks is proud to be the leader in quality deck construction. Our expert designers and builders never stray from the protocols set forth in the building codes, which is one of the main reasons why we are the most decorated deck contractor in the Greater Kansas City area. As respected industry professionals, we understand that adding an outdoor retreat is a big investment, so we do our very best to never fall short of exceeding customer expectations. At the end of the day, AWD is in the business of bringing dream decks to life. This means building to the highest standards using quality Kansas City decking materials that laugh in the face of Jack Frost.
Remember, the best way to protect your deck from snow and ice damage is to have your roof and gutters maintained before wintry weather hits.

The Benefits of a Curved Deck
When most people think of a backyard deck, they picture one with a rectangular or square design. While this isn’t a bad thing, curved Kansas City decks are quickly becoming all the rage for a variety of reasons.
Sure, they’re aesthetically pleasing, but curved decks provide homeowners with benefits they simply can’t achieve with decks that have 90° angles.
Cutting corners never felt so good!
Curved Kansas City decks have an amazing ability to beautify homes and landscaped gardens, but they are functional, too! Read on to discover how these unique deck designs have benefits that will help you enjoy your outdoor living space more than you ever thought possible.
Curved Decks are Easier to Maintain
Wind and rain force leaves and dirt into the corners of decks where they can accumulate.
When this happens, the debris will harbor moisture, which leads to mold and algae growing on the decking boards. If the deck is constructed of wood, it will eventually start to rot if the debris isn’t swept away from the corners and off the deck regularly.
Curved decks don’t experience this problem because they don’t have corners that capture and collect leaves and other yard debris. This means fewer maintenance and repair issues, so homeowners can enjoy their outdoor living space instead of feeling backed into a corner with a broom and a pressure washer.
Curved Decks Enhance a Home’s Value
Kansas City homes that feature a deck with sensual curves are a rare sight to behold.
Homeowners who choose to build a curved deck are making an excellent investment! An outdoor living space with smooth, rounded edges is not only gorgeous, but it also complements the home’s design and landscape. This fact alone makes it surprising that curvaceous deck designs are just now becoming popular choices.
Curved Decks are Most Inviting
Kansas City decks with curves beckon in a gentle whisper, “Sit down… relax… stay while.”
Only a curved deck offers wrap-around seating that hugs all who choose to partake in its graceful charm. When evening falls, family members and friends can gather around the fire pit to tell stories or sing songs until only glowing embers remain.
Should you choose to build a curved deck, don’t be surprised if you can’t resist extending the elegance by adding a curved patio!
Experience all the beneficial luxuries of a curved deck!
All Weather Decks is the premier deck contractor in the greater Kansas City area, and we never cut corners—except when we’re designing and building curved Kansas City decks!
It doesn’t matter if you want an outdoor living space made of natural wood or composite, we’ll create the deck of your dreams minus troublesome corners that’ll cause you to work when you just want to relax. It just depends on your personal taste and how much effort you want to put into maintaining the fixtures. Composite and stone masonry are simple to care for since they just need to be pressure washed every so often to remove dirt and pollen, but wooden built-in furniture must be sealed with stain or paint to stay protected from the elements.
No matter what material you choose, you can’t beat the quality, value, and lifespan of built-in deck furniture!

5 Tips for Designing an All-Season Deck
An all-season deck is the ultimate Kansas City deck design because it allows homeowners to enjoy their outdoor living space all year long.
Building an all-season deck onto your home is a wise decision. In addition to increasing your property value, its durable construction materials can withstand nature’s elements and daily foot traffic. This beautiful Kansas City deck design also requires less maintenance, so you can spend more time enjoying everything your outdoor retreat has to offer season after season—even during inclement weather!
An all-season deck makes outdoor living a more satisfying experience!
The following tips will help you create an all-season Kansas City deck design that’ll suit all your needs.
1. It’s not an all-season deck without composite decking.
Composite decking performs splendidly when exposed to nature’s harshest conditions.
Created from recycled woods and plastics, composite decking is a durable green building material that doesn’t need stained, sealed, or chemical cleaners to keep it looking gorgeous.
Unlike natural wood, composite decking boards won’t crack, splinter, or warp. This is great news for homeowners who don’t want to spend time and money replacing damaged boards with brand new ones that aren’t going to match the original decking.
 2. Shield the main gathering area from sun and wind.
Adding a pergola to the design will make your outdoor living space more comfortable.
Pergolas are the perfect solution to keeping your deck’s gathering spot extra pleasant. You’ll love how its joists and beams provide shade while hanging curtains from the corbels keeps the wind at bay.
 3. A fireplace makes spending winter outdoors a wonderful experience!
When you add a fireplace to your Kansas City deck design, you and your friends will stay toasty as you’re cheering on your favorite sports teams during the coldest wintry afternoons.
  4. Add a cover for year-round protection from harsh sunlight and inclement weather.
When you choose to add a cover to your all-season deck design, you’ll never be stuck inside during a spring shower or snow flurries. The cover will also keep your composite decking boards cool enough for bare feet during the hottest days of the year.
 5. Enclosing all or part of the deck is a true all-season design!
When your deck is fully or partially enclosed, you can watch the seasons change from the shelter of your outdoor living space. The screened enclosure will protect your deck and furniture from accumulating dirt, pollen, and fall leaves, so you can spend less time cleaning your openair retreat.
All-season decks are a worthy investment!
Homeowners who choose an all-season Kansas City deck design gain the most use and satisfaction from their outdoor living space.
All Weather Decks specializes in designing and constructing all-season decks. We take great pride in masterfully installing all the lovely features that make an outdoor living space a pleasant place to be all year long.

How to Design a Deck Garden
Imagine harvesting fresh greens without getting your shoes dirty or relaxing on your deck surrounded by the tantalizing aromas of lavender, rosemary, and thyme!
Having a Kansas City deck garden can enhance the splendor of your outdoor living space by creating a level of beauty and convenience a yard garden can’t deliver.
The best part about including a garden in your original deck design is all the money you’ll save compared to hiring a contractor later to handle the project separately.
Enjoy fresh produce just a few steps from your kitchen door!
If you’re concerned about your deck becoming a filthy mess because of the dirt
Don’t worry! The following Kansas City deck garden designs keep your outdoor living space clean and tidy.
Raised beds positioned alongside your deck’s border.
When your garden is built on the perimeter of your deck, you’ll be living a gardener’s dream! Not only will you be surrounded by tasty produce, but you’ll enjoy harvesting without getting your shoes muddy. However, there are a few construction specifications that need to be covered.
If your new deck is built out of composite wood, the raised garden boxes can be made of the same material to match the deck. However, if you want the garden beds constructed from natural wood, your best bet is to go with redwood, cedar, black locust, and white oak because they’re naturally resistant to rot. Of course, you can always choose to have the raised boxes designed with stone masonry to create a Kansas City deck garden that will last a lifetime!
Deck railings provide unique gardening space!
Choosing to design your deck with a narrow railing will allow you to hang baskets of herbs, edible flowers, and other tastebud temptations. Taking advantage of your railings in this manner will keep your decking boards from becoming dangerously cluttered with potted plants.
Create a hanging garden using arbors and pergolas!
Including an arbor or pergola in your deck design will provide dedicated gardening space. Enjoying fresh cucumbers, grapes, and Gogi berries is easy when you have a trellis-like structure to grow them on. Furthermore, the pergola’s slats are perfect for hanging baskets of strawberries and tomato plants.
No matter how you incorporate this feature into your Kansas City deck garden design, ensure the arbor or pergola will be erected on the side that receives the most sunshine.
You can make the pergola even more functional by choosing to construct built-in seating on the inside of the structure so that you can have shelving for a potted garden. Consider adding this feature to your deck to create unlimited gardening space and keep your outdoor retreat free of tripping hazards.
Furthermore, during the winter, when your garden is dormant, you’ll have more than enough seating for your holiday party guests!
A tiered deck garden makes growing your favorite veggies easy!
This creative design will keep your plants neatly separated and organized. Building steps that lead directly from the deck to the garden will deliver a level of convenience you’ve never experienced before. You’ll never tire of the beauty this strategically designed deck garden brings to your outdoor retreat!
Experience the delicious luxury of a Kansas City deck garden!
Choosing to go with a deck garden design opens a world of tasty possibilities!
Of all the design details already discussed, it’s important to remember that edible and floral gardens require at least six hours of sun to produce the fruits, veggies, and flowers you and your family love. Keeping this in mind, position your garden within the deck design to ensure the plants will receive enough sunlight.
If it’s impossible to build a deck within the budget that isn’t consumed by shade due to trees surrounding your home, adding a patio to the design that extends away from the deck may enable you to garden in the sunshine.
You can even build raised garden boxes on the patio to harvest fresh produce without breaking your back.
If you want an expertly designed Kansas City deck garden that will make it fun and easy to grow fresh food and show-stopping flowers, All-Weather Decks is eager to help you create your dream deck garden.
Adding a garden to your deck is smart because growing your produce will save you money considering the rising cost of grocery items. Additionally, when growing your veggies, you’ll know that the food on your plate is genuinely organic.
You can trust All Weather Decks to create the deck garden you’ve dreamed of. Our designers love hearing your ideas, then incorporating them into unique designs. We couldn’t be more proud of the numerous awards and encourage everyone to read the reviews from homeowners in the Greater Kansas City area who are thrilled to be enjoying the outdoor living spaces we made possible.

Prep Your Deck for Summer Fun! Suggestions from top Deck Contractor in Kansas City
Summertime is when your outdoor living space gets the most use. Whether you’re lounging in the sun with a cold drink and a good book or watching the kids giggle as they leap through the sprinkler in the yard, your deck is the epicenter of summer fun and relaxation.
However, you need to take steps to make your deck summertime worthy before the season officially kicks off.
Sun, fun, and safety: Ways to prepare your deck to make this summer a blast!
All-Weather Decks is an experienced deck contractor in Kansas City and provides the following essential tips on how to prep your deck before the summer fun begins.
Don’t Let an Unsafe Deck Destroy Your Plans for a Spectacular Summer
Please verify that your backyard deck isn’t a safety hazard by carefully inspecting each part. Start by checking for wobbly railings, loose stairs, and failing connections such as rusty and protruding nails and screws. It would also help make sure ledgers are not pulling away from home. Don’t forget to look underneath the deck for corroded connections.
Next, check for rotting wood. Replace all boards and posts that have seen better days.
Lastly, put on a cloth glove and run your hand along the railings and posts to check for rough spots. If you feel the glove snagged, you need to sand the area. The last thing anyone wants is to pause a good time to handle a painful splinter removal.
Protect Your Deck from Nature’s Elements
The summer sun, heat, and rain can do a number on your natural wood deck. Now’s the time to give your outdoor living space protection to withstand the elements.
The first step is to sweep off the surface dirt. Next, you need to use a deck brush and a bucket of soapy water to give the decking boards a good scrub. Now you’re ready to pressure wash your deck. Once you’re finished with this step, use a leaf blower to remove excess water, so the deck dries faster.
Apply a sealant. Doing this will protect the deck from UV rays and keep the wood from absorbing water, making the boards swell and becoming the ideal environment for mold, mildew, and algae that lead to slippery conditions. If your deck has an old coating of stain or paint, you’ll need to sand this off first before applying a fresh coat.
Time to Deck-orate!
Your safe, clean deck is ready to welcome summer, so have a blast making it look the part!
Place colorful cushions on your furniture and set flowerpots in spots that won’t be a tripping hazard.
Even if your deck has outdoor lighting, hang solar lights from the deck posts or the pergola to set the mood for late-night fun and extra safety in the dark. Staking solar lights in the potted plants will give your summer evenings a special glow!
All-Weather Decks Wishes You a Fun and Safe Summer!
Well-known throughout the area, All-Weather Decks is so much more than just a deck contractor in Kansas City. We are your trusted neighbors and want nothing more than for you and your family to spend summertime enjoying your outdoor living space to its fullest.

How to Clean Pollen Off Deck Furniture
There are so many things to look forward to when spring arrives, but pollen isn’t one of them.
In addition to triggering allergies, pollen collects on deck furniture in the form of a yellow dust. While unsightly, the worst part is that it prevents you from thoroughly enjoying your outdoor living space. Once there’s a layer of pollen on your deck seating, you can’t relax without getting it all over your clothes.
The problem with pollen is that it’s designed to stick to things. This works great if you’re a honeybee, but your deck furniture isn’t rolling around the yard pollinating plants. To be successful at removing this powdery residue from your patio furniture, you need to use specific cleaning methods as well as take preventative measures that allow you to clean less often.
Keep your deck furniture looking like the bee’s knees, or not!
When you want to hang out on your Kansas City deck, pollen can be a real buzz kill. Use the following strategies to clean this yellow dust off your deck furniture and keep it pollen-free.
Freshen Fabric Cushions
To properly clean pollen off your deck furniture cushions, you first need to dust them off. This can be accomplished with a hand duster, portable vacuum, or even a leaf blower set on its lowest speed.
Prior to dusting, you should spread out an old sheet in the yard as far from the deck as possible. Once this is done, set the furniture cushions on top of the sheet and proceed to dust off all sides of the cushions. By doing this over the sheet, you aren’t transferring the pollen to your deck’s surface and you’re also keeping the fabric cushions from touching the dirty ground.
Now that you’ve removed the loose surface pollen, it’s time to wash off the stuck on yellow residue. You can make your own warm mild soapy water solution in a bucket using a ¼ cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid or Woolite. Then, use a soft sponge to wipe down the cushions. Be sure to rinse the sponge often.
Next, spray the cushions with a garden hose and set them in the shade to dry on a sheet other than the one you used for the cleaning process.
If your deck furniture cushions are especially soiled with pollen, Sunbrella recommends using 303 Multi Surface Cleaner Spray because it’s safe to use on synthetic, natural, and delicate fabric, plastic, vinyl, metal, painted surfaces, canvas, teak, and outdoor upholstery.
Make Deck Furniture Frames Sparkle
Cleaning pollen off patio furniture frames is a breeze compared to the cushions, but you still need to follow protocol according to the design and material of the frames.
Wicker furniture can be wiped down with a wet sponge. However, a pressurized stream of water is necessary to remove pollen from all the crevices.
If your deck furniture is made of iron, mix a few drops of Dawn liquid dish detergent in warm water, then dip your sponge in and wipe the pollen from the frame. Once this is done, rinse the furniture using a hose.
Teak furniture is the easiest to clean due to the wood’s natural oils. Simply dust off the pollen using a soft cloth or an old t-shirt. If the pollen has become ground-in, it’s safe to use a brush and mild dish soap. Just remember to rinse off any leftover soap residue with a hose.
If your Kansas City deck furniture is made of metal or plastic with attached fabric seating, it’s safe to use a power washer on the lowest setting to get the chairs pollen-free.
Restore Tabletop Transparency
If your outdoor dining and end tables have glass tops coated with pollen, it’s super easy getting them clean and clear. Just make your own cleaning solution by mixing ¼ cup of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. Then, use a sponge to wipe away the yellow residue. Be sure to rinse the sponge often or you’ll leave streaks all over the glass.
Protect Deck Furniture from Accumulating Pollen
When springtime finally arrives, pollen can catch us off guard. Oftentimes, we’re still wearing sweaters when the trees and plants begin releasing pollen into the air.
To prevent your deck furniture from getting coated with yellow dust, cover your chairs and use fitted tablecloths. Doing this after all threats of snow have passed will save you a lot of time and energy because you aren’t giving pollen the chance to settle on your Kansas City deck furniture.
It’s a good idea to get into the habit of covering your patio furniture year-round to protect it from all of nature’s elements. This way, you aren’t cleaning your deck furniture as often and it’s always ready for you and your guests to enjoy.
Clean deck furniture allows for optimum relaxation!
When the pollen is cleaned off your deck furniture, the only yellow you’ll see will be from the sunshine.
We at All Weather Decks want you to enjoy your Kansas City deck all year long. Therefore, we like providing information that helps you overcome seasonal issues that can affect your outdoor living space.
Springtime is when your deck comes back to life. If you notice that it’s showing wear and tear or is no longer living up to your expectations, we are always happy to come out and see how we can remedy the situation or improve upon its design. It’s possible that a pergola would help you enjoy your outdoor living space more than you already do. We’ve made many Kansas City homeowners smile by building a cover over their deck, so they can relax in the fresh air without getting rained on. However, if you love stargazing, we can increase the safety of your outdoor living space by installing lighting on your deck.

Best Easter/Spring Deck Décor Ideas
Springtime is finally upon us, and Kansas City homeowners are eager to start enjoying their outdoor living spaces without the burden of being bundled up.
Once you’re finished putting away your winter wardrobe, use the following suggestions to start planning how you’re going to dress up your deck to celebrate the season.
Nothing puts a spring in your step like a decorated deck, so hop to it!
Decks in Kansas City always look fabulous this time of year as festive homeowners prep theirs for warm weather and all the outdoor fun that comes with it.
Relax Among Fresh Colored Linens
Revive your deck furniture by jazzing it up with new cushions and pillows bursting with color.
Pull your deck furniture ensemble together with other colorful linens. Springtime evenings are still chilly, so place a soft throw over the back of the couch or your favorite deck chair. If your outdoor living space has a cover, hang pastel-colored sheers to make your deck look dashing.
Hang Easter Eggs
Easter isn’t until April 17th, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy decorating for the holiday right now.
Easter eggs are a universal symbol of the season. Give your outdoor living space a whimsical appearance by hanging colored plastic eggs from your deck’s railings and the surrounding trees. If you have a pergola, they’ll look spectacular dangling from the trellis top and headers.
If you’re having a party on your deck, hold a fun Easter egg hunt! Use a Sharpie to write a number on the egg-citing decorations, then have your guests pick a number from an Easter basket. They’ll have a ball wandering around your outdoor living space in search of the egg that matches their number to discover what’s hidden inside.
Festive Garland Captures the Springtime Spirit
Decks in Kansas City are ready to celebrate the season when they have Easter bunny garland swaying in the breeze.
Pops of Color in a Pot
It does not spring without daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips! Placing pots of colorful blooms around your deck and on tabletops will make your outdoor living space come alive.
In the evening, your deck lighting will set the flowers aglow. Plant them in your landscape to enjoy next year when they’ve finished blooming.
Decks in Kansas City are Blooming with Springtime Style!
Homeowners in Kansas City love decorating their decks to celebrate the end of winter. It doesn’t matter if they’re beautifying their outdoor living spaces with bright colors or muted pastels; their family and friends will adore the way they’ve brought life back to their deck.
We at All Weather Decks are delighted to welcome spring’s return and hope everyone has fun decorating their deck. To the Kansas City homeowners who don’t yet have a balcony, we’d love to get yours designed and installed, so you can enjoy celebrating the season with your very own outdoor living space.
There’s truly no downside to investing in a deck. It increases the value of your home, and you’ll love having a private place to enjoy fresh air and sunshine. All-Weather Decks can make this happen for you. We have a stellar reputation as the premier deck builder serving the Greater Kansas City area, and we’d appreciate the opportunity to sit down with you to discuss how we can improve your home and lifestyle. Cool Bench Options for Your Kansas City Deck
Kansas City homeowners who enjoy hosting big parties on their decks often run into the problem of not having enough seating for their guests. Even if you aren’t into entertaining large groups, it’s not a good look to have your outdoor living space cluttered with chairs. Plus, this situation can be a tripping hazard.
When your Kansas City deck has built-in benches, you’ll always have enough seating for every occasion!
Built-in benches made of wood, composite, or stone are practical and convenient. When your deck is constructed with attached benches, you and your guests will always have a place to relax. This is especially true during the off-season when your furniture is covered up or in storage.
Get inspired by these creative bench designs for your Kansas City deck!
While stationary benches may seem boring, they don’t have to be. Many beautifully unique bench designs will turn your deck into the ultimate hangout while keeping it safe and organized.
Toast your toes by the campfire. When you have stone masonry benches around the fire pit on your dream deck, everyone will stay warm and cozy late into the night.
Sexy curves make for a proper seat. For deck designs that don’t have 90-degree angles, curved benches are a gorgeous finishing touch. Your family and friends will be impressed by how this bench seating design completes the deck’s aesthetic quality.
Relax on your decluttered deck. Built-in bench seating can serve a dual purpose when they’re designed like boxes with hinged tops.  They’ll surely come in handy because now you have a safe place to store an umbrella, children’s toys, pool floats, gardening supplies, and anything else you want out of sight, but still easily accessible.
Railings are sometimes unnecessary. When your outdoor living space is close to the ground, lining the edges of the deck with built-in benches instead of railings will make it much more functional. Railings only serve one purpose, but the sky’s the limit with benches! When your Kansas City deck’s border has built-in seating, all your guests have a place to relax. Plus, you have elevated spots for whatever suits your needs. Having a party? You can set a buffet of food on the benches instead of taking up space with tables. If you’re a gardener, place potted plants on the benches. Enjoy getting creative!
Relax in your very own spa resort. If you’re dreaming of a deck with a spa beneath a pergola, don’t forget to imagine it with built-in bench seating. Not only will you have a spot to chill while you’re drying off, but the stationary bench seating also conserves space and creates a relaxing ambiance that will melt your stress away.
Combine wood and stone for spectacular seating. If you can’t decide between wood or stone masonry benches, choose both! The look is very tasteful. Plus, you and your guests will always have a convenient place to set your drinks. If you’re a gardener or want your outdoor living space to have more privacy, the stone masonry can be designed to accommodate plants!
Flanked by greenery. When you have benches on your deck that have planters built into them, you can always enjoy communing with nature. Just be sure to consider the amount of sunlight the bench receives before choosing the plants you want to add. If your area gets full sun, have fun growing something edible like tomatoes!
Bench seating is always a smart feature for Kansas City decks!
When you incorporate bench seating into your deck design, you’ll save money in the long run. Patio furniture can carry a hefty price tag, and it doesn’t have a very long lifespan. Replacing it every few years can put a big dent in your wallet.  Plus, throwing away your old furniture adds to already stressed landfills. When your outdoor living area has built-in bench seating, it’s a win-win!
Another aspect to consider is how chairs take up precious space, which results in your deck feeling small and cramped.  When you have bench seating, your outdoor living area will always be spacious and inviting.
If you’re ready to enjoy the ultimate dream deck, we’re ready to apply expert care to design one that includes all the simple luxuries, so your outdoor retreat will be in a class all its own. Every deck design we create can include built-in bench seating, but it’s important to consider a variety of plans, which we are happy to present and discuss. We will only move ahead with construction once we know you feel confident with the intended results.

Spice Up Your Deck with Railing Ideas from a Deck Contractor in Kansas City
Railings are of course a necessary safety feature of decks. However, they are the first thing you see when you look at a deck, so they define its aesthetic quality. The railings you choose for your brand new or refurbished deck will make your outdoor living space stylish and truly unique. Certain types of railings can even increase the functionality of a deck.
There are several railing designs to choose from, so it’s okay to be particular about which one will allow you to get the most enjoyment from your Kansas City deck.
All things considered, the right railing compliments your Kansas City home and communicates your individual style.
Choose the Perfect Railing to Complete Your Kansas City Deck!
When choosing your ideal railing design, consider the shape of your deck and the style of your home as well as the surrounding area. For example, does your deck have 90-degree angles or smooth, rounded edges? Is your home a log cabin or Cape Cod? Will your outdoor living space overlook a lake or other scenic focal point?
By keeping the above details in mind, the following railing designs are sure to set your Kansas City deck apart from the rest!
Wooden Railing
If you’ve decided to build a natural wood deck, it makes sense to install wooden railings. Just remember that the railings need to be protected from the elements with stain or paint and treated for pests just like the decking boards. However, there’s no rule that says you must stain or paint the railings to match the decking boards, so let your creativity run free!
Composite Railing
This railing design is perfect for homeowners who desire style and stability without all the responsibility of annual maintenance. Railings made of a composite material come in a variety of colors and styles. While they are typically paired with composite decks, they can be installed on wooden decks just as easily.
Aluminum Railing
This type of railing is easy to maintain and will never go out of style. They come in a variety of designs with rods that can run vertically or horizontally, which satisfies the tastes of modern Kansas City homeowners. Since aluminum railings can be designed with curves, they are ideal for decks that have rounded edges. If you’re looking for high style, aluminum railings look stunning when installed on elevated decks that overlook water features such as lakes, ponds, and pools.
Glass Railing
Speaking of lakes, ponds, and pools, glass railings offer a perfect vantage point for Kansas City homeowners that have an outdoor living area that’s combined with a water feature. Glass railings also provide an extra layer of safety for young children and pets.
Cocktail Railing
If you enjoy using your Kansas City deck to hold large gatherings, a cocktail railing will suit your entertainment needs because you won’t have to clutter your outdoor living space with tables. Due to the railing’s flat top design, it’s a real crowd pleaser because your guests can socialize while placing their drinks directly on the railing.
Lighted Railing
These types of railings are wonderful for every Kansas City homeowner who loves being on their deck after dark. Not only does this railing design add a heightened level of safety, but it radiates a soft ambiance that won’t ruin a romantic evening or annoy stargazers.
Put Your Trust in the Best Deck Contractor Kansas City Has to Offer!
The right railing does wonders for a deck. In addition to satisfying necessary safety requirements, specific railing styles enhance a home’s brilliance while increasing the deck’s functionality.    If you’re ready to have an incredible deck that suits all your needs, All Weather Decks is here to make that happen. We are proud to be the best deck contractor Kansas City offers, and we have the awards and accolades to prove it. We have had the pleasure of serving Kansas City homeowners for more than 13 years and look forward to helping you design the deck that exceeds your wildest dreams, including the railing that will make it an architectural masterpiece.      As with any home improvement project, it’s important to consider a variety of deck plans, which we are happy to present and discuss.  We will only move ahead with construction once we know you feel confident with the intended results.

Which Kansas City Covered Deck or Patio Cover Design is Right for You?
Adding a cover to your deck or patio is an excellent way to enhance the overall enjoyment of your outdoor living space. In addition to shading your deck and keeping it cooler, rain and snow will no longer stop you from having your morning coffee outside or cause you to cancel a party.
Choosing to upgrade your Kansas City deck or patio with a cover is a fantastic investment decision. Doing so not only increases the value of your home, but your deck will last longer since it’s protected from the sun’s harmful rays, wet weather, and natural debris such as fallen leaves.
Kansas City Covered Decks Provide Comfort and Style!
All Weather Decks offers a variety of covered deck and patio cover designs to suit the needs of every Kansas City homeowner who wants to love their outdoor living space more than they already do.
Covered Deck Designs
Having a Kansas City covered deck means you have the luxury of enjoying your outdoor living space no matter what nature brings. The design possibilities are endless!
When you cover your deck, you have the option of screening it in to keep bugs away. Don’t forget to add ceiling fans to the design plans, so you’ll have relief from the summer heat!
You can even choose to turn your deck into a four-season room by enclosing it with glass. However, decide beforehand if you want the room to feel extra cozy by installing a fireplace.
Patio Cover Designs
If you’ve always wanted a covered patio, All Weather Decks can make your dream come true!
Covered Deck and Patio Cover Combos
Enjoy the best of both worlds!
Pergola Designs
If you don’t want to cover your outdoor living space with a roof-like structure, a pergola is a great way to satisfy your desire for shade and elegance.
The pergola design dates back 3000 years, so when you add one to your deck or patio, you’re giving it timeless beauty. Pergolas are a valuable form of functional art because their framework provides a shady place to relax and acts as the ideal place to hang flower baskets. It’s not uncommon for people to grow vines such as wisteria on the pergola’s posts and crossbeams to boost its ability to give shelter from sun, rain, and wind. Kansas City homeowners that have pergolas love hanging lights from theirs to make evenings and holidays sparkle!
It’s No Wonder Kansas City Covered Decks and Patios Covers Are So Popular!
You can’t go wrong by choosing to go with a covered deck or patio cover design. In addition to the heightened enjoyment you’ll experience, you will spend less time and effort maintaining your deck. For example, when a natural wooden deck has a cover, it’s protected from the damaging rays of the sun and wet weather conditions that can wreak havoc on the decking boards.
Taking a covered design to the next level by enclosing your deck or patio is even more satisfying because it reduces or eliminates the amount of dirt, dust, and pollen that can blow in and settle on furniture.
As with any home improvement project, knowing your end goal is an important factor in the design process. We at All Weather Decks appreciate every opportunity to sit down with homeowners and hear their outdoor living ideas, then discuss all available options. We will only move ahead with construction once we know you feel confident with the intended results. After all, your deck is more than an addition—it’s a valuable investment!

It’s Time to DECK-ORATE for the Holidays
The holidays are right around the corner, and your deck is the perfect stage to display festive cheer.  With a bit of creativity and imagination, your holiday décor will give family and friends a warm welcome, and they’ll love how your outdoor living space brings the holiday season to life.
Spreading joy is fun and easy when you have a Kansas City deck!
There are countless ways to make your outdoor living space joyful and bright this holiday season.  It doesn’t matter if you’re planning to entertain a large party or holding a small gathering, or simply want to enjoy the festive atmosphere all by yourself.  When your outdoor retreat is tastefully decorated, everyone will be in the mood to celebrate the season and ring in the new year!
Outdoor lighting will give your deck a festive glow.
Stringing lights around your Kansas City deck is the best way to give it holiday spirit.  There are many different types of outdoor lighting to choose from, so have fun hanging traditional white lights or go bold with colored ones.  Twinkling lights are popular, but if you don’t want your entire deck blinking, use them to draw attention to specific features of the deck such as the pergola.  If static illumination is more your style, hanging icicle lights around the top of the arbor will give it a very classy look.
It’s smart to wrap the railings with lights to provide a level of safety at night.  This is especially important if your deck has stairs.
Placing battery operating candles on the sills of interior windows that face the deck is a subtle touch that will add a distinctive warmth to your outdoor living space.
Ornaments aren’t just for indoor enjoyment!
Depending on the holiday style you want to present, there’s a wide selection of ornaments you can accent your deck with that are safe for outdoor use.  You can even make your own!  One way to do this is to collect pinecones and dust them with glitter.  Then, hang them from the slats of your pergola and the deck’s railings.
If you’re going with a whimsical theme, hang Santa and eight plastic reindeer from the eaves of your covered deck.  To celebrate the beauty of winter, it’s easy to find glittery snowflakes to hang from your deck and the surrounding trees.  In the daytime, they’ll glisten in the sunshine, and at night, your holiday lights will make them truly mesmerizing.
Classic holiday décor will always be in style.
Decks in Kansas City that are decorated in traditional holiday fashion invoke memories of Christmas at grandma’s house.  Adding a wreath or two is a perfect way to capture this essence and they hold up well in any type of weather.  If you have access to pine branches, creating your own wreaths is sure to impress, and the scent they’ll bring to your outdoor retreat will be intoxicating.
Poinsettias have been a universal symbol of the holidays for the past several decades.  They look amazing when they’re flanking doors and staircases.  Just be sure they aren’t placed where someone might trip over them.  To keep them healthy, set them in a location where they won’t be receiving direct sunlight.
Another gorgeous way of decorating your outdoor living space in a timeless manner is to wrap garland around the posts of your deck and secure it to windowsills.
If you have a pergola, feel free to drape the garland around the top of it, so it hangs naturally.  People will often weave strings of soft white lights throughout the garland to give it a magical glow.  Add some holiday romance to your outdoor living space by hanging mistletoe from your pergola, too.  This will surely take the chill out of the air!
Don’t despair if you can’t admire your Christmas tree when you’re sipping eggnog on your Kansas City deck.  A decorated mini tree placed in the corner of the deck or on a tabletop solves this problem easily, and you can plant it once the holidays have passed.
Decks in Kansas City are Keeping the Holidays Warm and Bright!
Homeowners throughout Greater Kansas City and Overland Park are enjoying the holiday season and welcoming the new year by decorating their decks.  Even though it’s cold outside and the sun is setting earlier, your festive deck will capture the spirit of the season to keep your guests warm and the hot cocoa flowing late into the night.  If the temperature gets a tad too frigid, family and friends will enjoy gathering around the fire pit to sing Christmas carols or hear the tale of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!
No matter how you choose to decorate your outdoor living space for the holidays, it’s going to look amazing!  Just don’t neglect regular deck maintenance such as sweeping the snow from the decking boards to keep ice from accumulating.
We at All Weather Decks want to wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and joyous holiday season filled with much love and laughter!  May the new year bring us all health, wealth, and unlimited happiness.
