The layers of 2x06's title being "Qui"

Considering "qui" means "who" in french, this title is all about the baby being stillborn. Who was he? Who could he have been? Nobody will ever know.

(Also, if you like reaching: maybe Shauna did meet him, maybe she didn't, in her "death dream"/purgatory. If she met anyone, who did she meet? That works for the baby but also for all the yjs she interacted with while "dreaming".)

However, a huge "hidden" layer to this title (and episode) is the song that's being hummed during the end credits. It's "Qui" by Charles Aznavour, a very famous french singer.

First, it's a French song, which links it to the Wilderness. Dead cabin guy was probably French, there was French milk in the cabin. Lottie talks/hears French when she's in deep, Lottie was singing the French lullaby "Frère Jacques" in Shauna's death dream, etc. So, this song is somewhat linked to the Wilderness due to being a French one. And the yj' own "wildernesses" are the parts of themselves which are visceral, uncontrollable and ultimately "shameful". Using French is Serious As Hell in yj. So whatever the song is about, it must be telling us something important.

So does the song say? It's about a dying man anguishing over who will be their lover's next lover. About being forgotten, replaced, once he's dead. Here are some (most) of the lyrics, to make my point:

"Who will touch your lips? Vibrating with fever, surprising your body, will become your master, by making it give birth to a new well-being, another happiness?"

-> This can very easily be interpreted as childbirth. As "who will be your next child?"

"Who will take over, to make your dreams come true, and without a remorse, with a burst of laughter, will know to drive you, to destroy me better deep within your heart?"

"Who might be this other one, who will be this intruder, in everything that was ours, when I won’t be any more?"

"Who, without you protesting, will redo the actions, which are only ours?"

"Who will take your weakness with carresses and the words of love, covering with oblivion our days of madness? Who will take your life at the end of my days?"

"Who? No one can tell. Who? We don't know anything. And my heart tears thinking that someone will take you an "I love you"."

-> This scene in 2x06 is the very first time in the entire show we see Shauna "admitting" she loves Callie.

"And with this "I love you", I know it already, he will take your mouth, he will take your diaper. And will bury me for the second time."

-> Devastating already.

But lemme go crazy on this one... The lyrics are basically "Once you say you love them, you'll bury me again". In the adult timeline, we see Shauna finally say she loves Callie. Not long afterwards in the episode's chronology, we see her son dying, and being buried in the first scenes of 2x07. Sure, it's already happened within the show's universe, but he "dies and is buried again" in front of us very soon after we see Shauna admitting she loves Callie. Idk if it was intentional, but it Hurt Me nonetheless.

=> So the use of this song tells us a lot about Shauna's complicated feelings towards her children.

It shows how Shauna imagines her son would react if she allowed herself to be close to Callie. "It's you and me against the whole world", she'd sworn to him. She fears breaking her promise to her son, "replacing" him and burying him in her heart, if she lets Callie in. Rejecting Callie, in her traumatized mind, in an act of love and devotion towards her son.

It all adds up, and it's so good and so so so sad.

Thinking about shauna and travis (inspired by this post by @taiturner) and gender, specifically "masculinity"

Travis clinging to shreds of masculinity within his reach, shrugging off his own emotions, reacting with anger and threats of violence to seem stronger, but ultimately being too soft and emotional and afraid to ever feel like he's doing it "right," how he hesitates to gut the deer because he does not want to be violent

Shauna's relationship to femininity being, in essence, a series of denials or rejections of her more inherent "masculine" traits, instantly and nonchalantly taking up the mantle of the butcher, keeping cool in times of chaos, effortlessly and skillfully carrying out acts of violence but hiding and denying this part of herself as she tries to fit the mold of heterosexual womanhood

How both are deeply emotional and sensitive characters trapped within the confines of gender expectations and the poison of their own self-image. How so often the expression of masculinity in society is defined largely on a rejection of the "feminine," you are defined not by the masculine traits you possess but by the feminine traits you can successfully reject. How much this narrative is flipped on its head with shauna and travis because shauna must constantly repress her "masculine" traits to keep up her veneer of traditional femininity, how travis is constantly striving towards nebulous ideals of masculinity but ultimately succumbs under the weight of his own emotionality and guilt, the fact that yellowjackets as a narrative asks us to examine what is inherent in all of us and what roles we have been forced to play. What kinds of people we become within those roles.

you know what truly drives me insane about the poppies on the wedding cake? it isn't just how it strongly suggests two completely different weddings. or how it shows that jackie's the reason behind this wedding, and that both shauna and jeff know it.

it's that jackie is represented by a wedding cake. by sweet and beautiful food, created just to be consumed. and as always, jackie's the main event of the evening, standing next to jeff and shauna. again, it'll end with them cutting her open and taking the first bites. the both of them, together, bound by always wanting more of jackie than what they got.
