i couldn't even appreciate the artistry behind the clothing designs this year at the met gala because my bitterness and anger toward the exorbitantly wealthy has grown too much to be contained i try to say ooo pretty gown but all the black hateful bile starts oozing out from under the lid of its container. 7 months of genocide and the largest homeless camps my city has ever seen and food banks in the universities and baby formula locked behind glass and stomach gnawing guilt over a $7 latte and rent is always late and always behind on electricity bills uh ohhhh summer is here time for another wild fire. oooo pretty gown. the next met gala theme will be bear spray and what happens is i bear spray inside the gallery. i can't even force a sort of healthy detachment anymore like "haha oh well i guess that movie actor is rich it's not like they're an ultra wealthy bazillionaire oooo pretty gown" they're all worms to me vile beasts i look at them in their isolated imagine john lennon covid song bubble and i feeeeeel the milk of human kindness curdling within me. how can you smile at the camera. we are all dying girl. isn't there a protest not even a block away from you guys? protesters and riot cops and homeless ppl in the streets. i guess that's unfair you guys deserve a night of glitz and glamour and getting away from it all as if you're not constantly away from it all. girl we are dying. sick sick world. sick dying world. anyway i didn't watch the met gala this year

Actually, while we are at it, can we talk about how awful a lot of the fanbase treats Basil? My man can’t catch a break because almost everyone misinterprets him one way or another.
Where do I even start? Literally everything he does is taken the wrong way. There’s the people who characterize him as an obsessive yandere who only cares about Sunny and did everything in his power to isolate him. On the other hand, we have people who just remove one of the basic core aspects of him as a whole and make him an empty husk with no real personality.
Headacanon him however you want, but also try to understand him? I don’t know how people can say he only cares about Sunny when it’s clear he deeply appreciates his friends. He has a stronger bond with Sunny, but that doesn’t mean he’s a possessive and obsessed person who is toxic.
He definitely fucked up along the way, but his actions were never intended to hurt Sunny intentionally. He was in a panic and all he wanted was to keep his best friend safe. People constantly treat him as he’s a disgusting person for simple fact he shows mental illness signs, which is incredibly disheartening because there IS people in real life who act this way and can’t help it! What a relief it is to know people will treat me or my friends like this if we dare show an ounce of distress or panic!
Being mentally ill does not justify your actions, but this also doesn’t mean you are allowed to treat people who suffer from them like scum. People like Basil deserve to get help, to have people who support them so they can start healing. Basil clearly didn’t have that support, the only person that was there for him being his bedridden grandmother who he eventually lost.
And on the other hand, we have people who just choose to get rid of Basil’s personality altogether and characterise him as this character who is all suffering and trauma based off things that are NOT canon. It’s true that Basil’s life doesn’t exactly fit a “normal” childhood (having to live with his grandmother for unknown reasons) but that doesn’t immediately mean he is beyond traumatized? Basil is a little shy, sure, but a lot of people are. Basil used to be a smart and lively kid who loved his friends dearly. It wasn’t until AFTER the incident that he spiralled to the point he is where we see him in game.
People either disregard his trauma and paint him as a villain (let’s make one thing clear, there are NO villains in OMORI), or try to give him even more trauma for no apparent reason. All we know is that his parents aren’t really present in his life, and while that may bring some issues, from what we can see in cutscenes and the photo album, Basil lived a comfortable life surrounded by a loving family member and friends who cared about him.
You are free to explore Basil’s character however you like, but there’s a point where it no longer feels like Basil.
There is nothing wrong with showing his gentle side, just as how there’s nothing wrong to explore his unhealthy behaviour. But focusing on only one of the aspects of his entire self just turns him into a one-dimensional character with no redeemable qualities.
In my opinion, Basil is one of the best examples of a person struggling with mentally illness in media, yet people choose to ignore the complexity of his character to have either a selfish and dangerous yandere or a cute and shy femboy who’s only there to look pretty.
Write him like the mess he is. He is unstable. He is resentful, he is paranoid. That’s what makes Basil’s character so loved. That’s what makes him feel so relatable and human. Ignoring one side of his self takes away all of that. OMORI is a game about acceptance and forgiving. Why shouldn’t we apply those terms to their characters? It’s rather hypocritical for the fanbase to treat Sunny as a poor boy who only did what he did due to stress and trauma and then mark Basil as a psychopath with no redeemable features as if he wasn’t also a scared child who witnessed his very best friend push his sister down the stairs.

So when are we going to admit almost all of the fandom doesn’t get Mari’s character at all.
#sorry for being all up in your notes bestie (i’m not) ur just so incredibly based and i need to remember to put this in the ppt#when i think abt the characters i usually just think abt sunny bc i too developed an entire world in my head to cope once and i find his#story very interesting BECAUSE he’s so unreliable it’s the same reason i like pjo but the opposite direction#headspace and omori (the character) present a VERY VERY VERY skewed version of events bc THATS THE WHOLE POIJT#sunny believed EVERYRHING was his fault. “if i try harder if i practiced more if i was good enough maybe we wouldn’t have ended up this way’#hs mari is perfect because he saw her that way!!! she died because she was flawed!! and sunny still saw her as perfect after everything!!!#mari STARTED that fight. she (as a ghost or just another figment of hs) ADMIT it was her fault#‘i’m sorry. i just wanted it yo be perfect’ because they both knew she was pushing him harder than he could take#yeah she can be upset but you don’t YELL at someone like that ESPECIALLY if they’ve had intense reactions to it in the past#(i think that last part abt him having outbursts is hc ive ingrained into the canon storyline in my brain so. sorry)#but even more so if they’ve NEVER displayed that kind of reaction. it takes A LOT of build up and intense immediate pressure to cause#ppl who internalize every emotion they’ve ever had to BREAK SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO THEM IN ANGER#i think abt the picture from the truth of her blocking him from leaving a lot. i think it says a lot abt her feelings.#bc she moved there on purpose to keep him from running and then faced the consequences of inertia#he just smashed one of his most prized possessions by throwing it down the stairs and your next course of action is to stand at the top#of those steps? listen we all make bad choices in these kind of moments but my girlie in christ some of that’s gotta be on you#she’s not a bad person or sister and sunny isn’t completely innocent! they both made bad choices! they’re human! that’s the point of living!#i’m truly adding nothing to this thread i just have feelings i can’t get out fully til july#love yall im gonna read the basil take now bc basil and i…we aren’t on speaking terms (i tolerate him but otherwise? hm…)

I really hate to say it but they did Luke's betrayal and characterization better in the show. In the books he's just evil, he throws litter in a river to signify his badness (littering is bad, kids) and then tries to kill Percy in cold blood. In the show he seems genuinely confused and conflicted, like someone who's gone mad and doesn't realize it and doesn't get why the people around him are looking at him like that. He seems hurt that Percy gave the shoes to Grover and also doesn't seem to realize why Percy can't see that it wasn't meant as a betrayal. He seems to believe himself, that it wasn't meant as a betrayal and that he still considers Percy his friend. He only attacks when Percy mentions his father, and the look on his face the moment before is brilliant, this is a person who has snapped. This is a confused kid who has been groomed and recruited for war by something much more ancient, powerful, and evil than himself. It sets up his eventual final redemptive act much better. The Last Olympian will always be iconic but it is kind of strange how he's mustache-twirlingly evil for 5 books and then seppuku's himself in a single moment of clarity at the end and can be considered a hero for it despite all the death and destruction he caused leading up to it. It's setting him up to be much more tragic and likeable as a villain.
