Outside, two lone figures were standing in the dark.
"It's in here, Koehler," one of them spoke in a hushed voice, leaning towards his companion. "I can feel it in my gut."
"Aye," Koehler replied slowly, "me too."
It had been four months since the crew had last found some of the golden pieces they had been hunting for nearly two long years – they had to attack a merchant ship, a lot of hassle for just a handful of coins. So when that very morning the men had heard a faint but familiar humming sound in the distance, all of them had felt their mood suddenly improve. The hum turned out to be coming from San Juan, Puerto Rico – less than a hundred miles away from their then position. Considering the town's size and means of defense, Barbossa had decided that the best strategy would be to avoid any chaos. They had reached their destination late in the evening, and both Twigg and Koehler had been assigned to make for shore in a longboat and retrieve what they all sought. A duo, after all, was less likely to be noticed than a larger team.
And here the two of them were, standing near a fancy place where an equally fancy party seemed to be held, having followed the soft yet unmistakable throb sent to them by the cursed gold. It seemed like the Aztec gods, in a supreme act of generosity, had given the lot of them some kind of supernatural sense – a clear sign that the divinities wanted the gold back where it belonged. Koehler might have snickered at the irony of the situation, if the part of him that was capable of it hadn't died a long time ago.
"What're we waitin' for, then?" Twigg's voice had grown impatient, desperate. "Let's go in, grab the damn thing and be off!"
"No. Remember the Captain's orders: no unnecessary bloodshed."
"An' you just look where his orders got us," Twigg replied in a poisonous tone, spitting on the floor.
Koehler didn't blame him; honestly, he felt the same way. Two seasoned (not to mention immortal) pirates against a few rich folks – it would have been so easy. And defying Barbossa's command... the idea was tempting. Still, he might have respected a piece of stale bread more than the man, but he had to admit that Barbossa was smart. Very smart. He had told the crew that if word got out that a ship of murderous pirates targeted Caribbean ports and towns, it could make their quest much harder than it already was.
Koehler licked his lips pensively.

"Let's just lay low for now and hide. We'll take care of whoever has the gold when they come out."
Hopefully it wouldn't take too long.

The problem with this party was … that it was actually very difficult to call it one. ‘Party’ gave the impression of at least some sort of merriment and fun, but while the bunting was hung, the candles lit and the band playing cheerfully in a corner, the attendees were remarkably lacking in zest.
Knots of people gathered in different corners of the room. Some were making half-hearted conversation while their partners tried not to doze off on their arm, while those men without company milled around the liquor tables, either drinking themselves to glee or circulating through any women not sitting along the walls and hiding behind their fans.
Which was how Thera came to be under the dubious care of Señors Abello and Cardoso, the first lamenting his wife’s ill health and the other the pitiful state of the fishing industry now that new regulations were in place. She in turn was listening politely, given there was really little else to do, though she mostly hid behind a glass of wine and her jaw was beginning to ache from holding back a yawn …

You always know when an angry person is angry, but someone who always seems calm could be 3 inches away from stabbing you in the throat with a toothbrush handle and you’d never know.

which Greek God/Goddess do you reflect most?
Tumblr media
Hephaestus
Hephaestus is the Greek god of blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes. As a smithing god, Hephaestus made all the weapons of the gods in Olympus. He served as the blacksmith of the gods, and was worshipped in the manufacturing and industrial centers of Greece, particularly Athens. He was strong, intelligent, and respected by many, but not all.

Despite what his aloof, brute-ish demeanor might lead one to think, Koehler actually possesses a sharp mind and understands people, their motives and their reasonings very easily - especially since he’s so often in an observative position. It’s a skill that he really only uses to avoid any unnecessary risks or drama, as opposed to just probing people for the hell of it (he doesn't care enough to anyway)
He really doesn’t trust anyone, but he’s even more distrustful towards people he can’t read (like Jack Sparrow). They make him very uncomfortable and the sooner he gets away from them, the better

The main reason why the crew were so incredibly bloodthirsty and violent (even by pirate standards) was the very curse that had rendered them immortal: deprived of every comfort in their (non-)lives, trapped in an impenetrable fortress of isolation from even something as seemingly insignificant as touch, destruction eventually became the only pleasure left to these already violent men. Slaughter drowned out their worries and anger, and when caught in the heat of battle they couldn’t stop to think about their hopeless situation.
This particular mindset only became worse after spending years looking for the very last remaining lost coin - Bootstrap’s. Though all of them kept holding on to their own personal reasons to go on, it’s fair to say that the vast majority of them had probably all but given up hope by the time the medallion called out to them from deep within the waters of Port Royal’s bay.

Of courseCaptain Teague would notice. In spite of his apparent dispassionate nature, theman somehow seemed to always be awareof even the most insignificant happenings in town – especially when it came tohis crew.
Koehler reflexivelywiped his nose on his sleeve; when he lowered it at his side again, it wasstained red. The left side of his face was numb and sore and he was walkingwith a slight (yet, apparently, noticeable) limp. He found himself silentlyhoping that the bullet that had bitten through his shin hadn’t made anypermanent damage. For now, though, his surprise visit to the surgeon would haveto wait: there were explanations to be given. Koehler swallowed a bitingcomment and looked his captain in the eye, his usual sullen expressionunchanged.
“Justa run-in with some drunken swab. Nothin’ much,” he said, ignoring themetallic taste permeating his mouth and the throbbing in his left eye.
He had survivedmuch worse.
