Sound Assignment Version #2. I had fun doing the first one and wanted to make another version.
The sound of rain and intense wind
created with tapping my nails on my desk for the rain patter, scratching my scarf with my nails for the wind, and playing with a hot sauce packet to give the sound of the rain more depth

Flag of my city, Karachi. Karachi is the biggest city of Pakistan. I’ve kept the colors of the flag the same as the colors of Pakistan’s flag to retain some association to the country. The two things that make Karachi the city it is are:
1) the Arabian Ocean. Karachi is a coast city with a big, beautiful coast line that is our main attraction. The waves are representing that.
2) how culturally-diverse it is. Karachi has people from the entire country living in it and there are a number of languages that are spoken in this city. The top five are Pushto, Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi, and Urdu. The five waves are representing that.

Soundscape #2
Citrovia Manhattan West
There is a building under construction right next to where I am sitting. The building used to make a loud explosive sound around every 20 seconds. It wasn’t the kind of sound that would irritate you, though. It’s very muted and not dominating
The dominating sound was definitely the traffic. Especially trucks; I could easily tell whenever a truck used to pass by
Five minutes into the activity, a machine turned on in the construction building that produced a constant buzzing sound
This installation is a big deal in Manhattan West right now, so there are quite a couple of people and I could hear them talk. I just heard a man say ‘hey mom’ on the phone. For some reason, I really wanted to open my eyes then to just see whose voice I’m hearing
The machine had stopped soon
Two women were talking about going to Whole Foods and I was following their entire conversation
A brown couple passed by and since hey were talking in Hindi, I could make out what they were saying. I really wanted to see what they’re like
Kids were running around and I could hear them laugh
A bike without a silencer passed once creating probably the loudest sound in the entire experience
I heard a fairly loud thing fall on my side. Sounds like it was someone’s personal item. I resisted the urge to open my eyes and see
One of the team members behind me was briefing someone about what the installation is about
A lot of people are snacking around me so I could also hear the sound of plastic bags every now and then
Footsteps, apart from traffic, was another background noise I could hear the entire time
Since I’m in a pretty large space, there are a variety of sounds. The closest sound is definitely construction, the most constant sound is traffic

Reflection on Sound
As a child, my favorite radio program used to be the Late Night Horror Show with Minhaj Ali Askari. People used to call and narrate their ghost encounters. A terrifying audio used to be playing in the background that used to complement the stories a little too well. It was the mix of the stories and the background audio on loop that used to make the show send chills down my spine.
I think I’m over the dramatic audio and exaggerated effects phase now, because currently, my favorite podcast is Kia Kahe Ga Kazi, a simple, yet immensely interesting podcast of the host, Kazi Akber, talking to various guests. I love the podcast because of how calm, non-dramatic, unfiltered, and non-curated it is.
My favorite film sound design has to be Ratatouille’s. It’s mind-boggling how rich, detailed and focused the sound designers’ work is. It always get me so indulged in the movie. I once watched a BTS video of the sound design of the movie and since then I have been in awe of how interesting the field is and how much effort goes into it.
When I think of sound design, I always think of one of the last scenes from Kal Ho Na Ho, one of my favorite bollywood movies. The hero is hospitalized and doesn’t have much time left and so, they put the sound of his heart beating in the last few crucial scenes. Even when the scene isn’t showing the hospital, the sound of the heart beating is there, which would be non-diegetic sound. (Yes, I do my readings). Even though it sounds a little cringey/mushy, it always gets to me. It also makes me feel anxious, as if I’m the one who doesn’t have time left. It starts a sort of countdown in my head, like something huge is about to happen. Kal Ho Na Ho is an early 2000s movie that was also my favorite childhood movie. So I’m not sure if it’s just the emotional attachment to the movie and the scene, and maybe if I had watched the movie for the first time at my current age, I wouldn’t have felt the same way.
---
I don’t think I consume a lot of sound as compared to the people around me who always have their headphones on. I listen to music walking to school and walking back home. And I listen to a podcast while I have dinner. I can’t focus with music playing, so I don’t listen to it while I work. I can’t focus with even lyric-less music playing in the background.
