I asked some questions about funeral services and family. The nurse reported that they had orders to bury him with a simple headstone.She also told me that his family wanted nothing to do with him and would not even be notified. She only called me so I would not waste my time coming to see him. Suddenly, I understood why I visited Ross.It was for this moment.After some investigation, I discovered that before Ross had become sick, he was mean and abusive. He had lived a regrettable life with little to show that he had ever been here except a simple headstone in a cemetery out of the way in small-town America.It was at that moment that I decided I was going to live a life that was worth more than a stone. Routinely ask these questions to live a life that matters.Did I love well?At the Gospel Rescue Mission where I work, I see many who have burned every possible bridge with family and friends. Some have stolen from children or done other abuses. They feel utterly alone and afraid. Love and connection are a need, not a want. We need love.When we cannot find love in people, we find it at the bottom of a bottle or in a baggie. Love and connection with people bring life. All other searches for love end in the death of heart and soul. I envision a funeral for myself one day that matters. Surrounded by friends and family, they support one another in grief and love.I do not want to end up alone in a nursing home with no one caring. I desire someone to be called and informed that I have passed away, and to them, it matters. If I want that to be true, I need to love well every day. I must seek to talk and play and care about others more than myself. At the end of the day, I ask myself, “Did I love well?”Did I live well?How did I live? Was I a villain or a hero? How did I interact with strangers? Did I live well? Did I give more than I took, or will they remember me as a giver? These are questions I ponder.It is my greatest desire to be remembered as a force for incredible good in this world. Each day I examine my choices and actions. How did I live today? How can I do it better tomorrow? I hate regrets. I choose to ask myself routinely, “Did I live well?”What is my legacy?All men die, but not all men truly live. What will you leave behind that has value? Our stuff will be disseminated. Some will be tossed in the trash, and others will be fought over. However, all that really matters is the impact of your life.Are there people in the world that are still alive and living inspiring lives because of you? If not, examine your surroundings. Who can I impact today? Consistently look around and determine who might carry on your legacy.Where do I want to live?I now live in the home where I intend to spend my last days. Those days are most likely still a long way off. Yet the woods and fields bring me peace and joy. Today I will run a 10K so I am healthy enough to someday play with grandchildren and have the energy to give my family my whole being.Purpose means that there is more to you than just borrowing oxygen for a season. Everyone, yes, you too, has a purpose. Seek it and find it. There is no greater quest. When you find it, you will find reasons to get out of bed and a reason to overcome difficulty. Ask yourself what your life’s purpose is.What have I added to humanity?As a Boy Scout growing up, I routinely heard, “Let’s leave it better than we found it.” We would clean up the campsite and throw out the trash that may have been left by previous tenants. We would be instructed to pick up trash we would see as we walked to a museum or anyplace else our adventures would take us.This was a great character-building exercise. This is also true for those who want to finish our lives well. What are you adding to humanity before you die? Let us determine to leave it better than we found it.Who do I need to forgive?No doubt many have let you down and disappointed you. Some might have deliberately abused you and lied about it or stolen from you and gloated.Regardless holding on to that angst and frustration will not help you today nor in the future. The choices of others might shape the amount that you can trust them, but do not hold a grudge. Do what you can to be a forgiving person.What adventures do I need to have?There is always time for one last adventure. In 1952 my grandfather returned from the Korean conflict by plane. He did not get on a plane again until he was in his 70s. He hated flying.But he wanted to feel fully alive, so not only did he fly to the east coast, he went parasailing with my cousin. That is a great life. Adventures show us we are alive. We need more of them before we die.How will I be remembered?Those closest to me know me. I have been told that I am a good man. But is that how I will be remembered? Is that even how I want to be remembered? Most days that is good enough.But what I really want to be remembered as is a hero and a daring adventurer who spoke to thousands and lived a life that helped others live successfully. If I want to be remembered that way, I still have some work to do.Today you have a choice. Rather than wait until the last moment, start asking yourself these questions today before you die. So, it is important for you to have an elixir against it, which we can access at all times and Self-Motivation it is. This is because self-motivation is ever present right within you. Whenever you get engulfed by stress, you just have to access your inner armor to prevent us from dwindling. Although, you can also carry many external sources of motivation along at all times in your smartphone such as motivational videos and podcasts. It isn’t possible to access them at all times. For instance, if you are in the middle of a conversation with someone and it turns out to be stressful, you cannot just stop and start looking for a motivational video. It is only with the armor of ‘Self-Motivation’ that you can do so. Or, if you want to be a successful singer, just listening to Adele’s new album should do the trick.You don’t have to remind yourself! Instead, write down your dream. Use it as a reference point. Hint: Routinely take time to dream about your dream! Cherish this time! But don’t obsess over it! Don’t worry! You won’t forget it!The Thousand Pieces of a DreamBreak down every dream into “action steps.” List every step, including where you are now and where you want to be. This is the juicy part! This is where you encounter the magical transformation that needs to happen.Once you break down the transformation, it becomes less magical and more real. I don’t know about you. I can’t do magic. But I can be real all day, every day. Hint: Start backward from your dream to now! Be specific about each step! Be realistic about where you are now!Example: Wear a bikini on the beach!Get a bikini wax the weekend before the beach tripVisit the tanning salonSchedule the final weigh-in; take measurementsDo only yoga this week; focus on toningRun 5 miles three days this weekTake a H.I.I.T class twice this week; burn that fatDon’t have a piece of cake at Georgia’s wedding this weekDon’t buy chips or ice cream when you go shopping todayAchieving Goals Involves Setting a TimerStatistics show that achieving goals and deadlines are closely linked. You are more likely to achieve a goal if you give yourself a deadline. However, there’s nothing like a deadline to invite overwhelm!Don’t set a time to accomplish the dream. Set a deadline for the first few steps of your process. How long will it realistically take you to accomplish step one? When will you be done with step two? Plan your timeline out this way! Hint: Work with only a few goals at a time! Only move on after you’ve hit those marks!Commit To Your PartnerFocus on each step as if it were the dream. Devote yourself to step one because it is as, if not more, significant than the last step. Not eating that donut now can feel as good as dancing in that bikini will! But it’s up to you to assign that importance to step one!Respect each step! Hint: Think of it this way. You wouldn’t have planned it if it wasn’t a necessary step. If it’s necessary to your journey, then it’s important!Send Yourself FlowersSince you are treating each step like the dream, then you should celebrate them accordingly! Give yourself a small gift. Go incrementally. Plan a nap. Get a manicure. Buy that Adele song on iTunes. Hint: Make sure your gift doesn’t negate your accomplishment. Don’t gift yourself with a bar of chocolate as a reward for not eating a donut. You know you were thinking about it!Write Love NotesWhen something great happens, you want to remember it. Achieving goals is about experiencing positive memories. After you complete a step, write it down. What did it feel like to accomplish that step?What did you gift yourself with? Engage joyously with your now! Hint: Have some fun with it! Write to your past & future selves! Let your brain connect your past, present, and future.Example: Right now, I am so proud of myself for not eating that piece of wedding cake. You know, I remember when you (your past self) used to have cake every night! I bet you (your future self) eat grapes to satisfy your sweet tooth! I’m not there yet! Ha! But I’m cake-less tonight!Don’t Keep The SecretFor certain steps, assign an accountability report to it. You might celebrate quietly when you don’t eat the cake. But, plan to call a friend after you’ve completed a bigger step. Go public! Hint: Pick a supportive friend. You don’t even have to tell them about the process. Just celebrate that moment with them.Your Mind’s EyeImage boards are highly effective when bringing your dreams to life. But, remember, you are now engaging with your action steps as if they are the dreams. Start collecting images for each step. Feed your mind’s eye with reminders of the process. Hint: Take full advantage of your smartphone here. Snap some shots that you can mentally attach to a step. Use apps like Pinterest to gather images.Enjoy That You Are Gettin’ It DoneYou should feel a sense of pride as you go through this process. It’s set up so that you are constantly achieving and being rewarded. Why? Because we continue to do the things that make us happy. When you follow this method, it will shift all your focus to the process. The more you focus on the process, the more you will fall in love with it. People become enamored with what they focus on.The dream will be a by-product of the transformation that occurs as you move from step to step. You are ready to conquer any Herculean task that is standing in your way to success. You are transformed, and you cannot wait to show the world what you are capable of. The next day, you wake up early in the morning. You turn off your phone’s alarm clock with such energy you know you are going to smash the day.  A week passes by, and you are still smashing it. People around you start to notice. You are a changed man! Another week passes by, you feel a bit drained, but you soldier on. In the third week, you feel kind of sick of anything motivation related — what happened here? I asked myself the same question countless times, and I came to the realisation that mass-produced motivation can only last so long. What happened is that you got a boost in motivation from the self-help book, but you did not achieve sustainable motivation; the one that lasts forever. The only way you can stay motivated is to personalise your motivation. Make it as personal as possible. You must look at motivation from a bottom-up, not top-down, perspective. In this article, I am going to show you how to do just that. You are going to learn a few tips on how you can personalise motivation, building it from the inside out.   1. Diagnose your strengths The first step to personalise your motivation is to pinpoint and capitalise on your strengths. What is your strong suit? There are two ways to find the answer: Analyse the history of your achievements Ask people who know you well For example, when I was a university student, I got the highest grade in public speaking. People also often told me that I had a good way with words (I am saying that humbly!). What does all this mean? It means I have charisma. I am able to inspire others with my words. So, how can I use this to personalise my motivation? Well, if I can inspire people with my words, I can inspire myself with them, too. I talk to myself every day. Whenever I run low on motivation, I use metaphors, similes and personification created from my own imagination to shake off whatever parasite that is sucking strength out of my soul. My words never failed me. Pinpoint your strengths and capitalise on them. 2. Tap the power of personal symbolism Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas. For example, the cross is a symbol of redemption and sacrifice. Motivation and success are the driving forces behind everything you do, and your strengths help you smash through challenges to reach your destination. So, why do you not give all this a concrete shape? When you give what you believe in a concrete shape, it does not just become part of who you are. It becomes who you are. This gives motivation a whole new meaning. For example, a few of my strengths are intensity, passion, physical energy, yearn for self-expression and somewhat deeply buried anger at the idea of anyone being better than me at what I do. I decided that the sun symbol perfectly represents who I am and how I overcome my moments of weakness. I wear my sun necklace all the time. It is part of my motivation. It shows the world my motivation, and I love it when people ask me about it. Here are a few other ways to draw on the power of motivational symbolism: Choose a symbol that best represents your motivational philosophy Create your own ID card. Your picture, name, symbol of your choosing and other information that matters to you should all be there. Rings, necklaces and bracelets with the symbol of your choosing are great ways to materialise your motivation Tattoos are also an option, but I do not recommend them. They are not easily disposable and as you progress in your motivation journey, what motivates and what does not motivate you may change drastically. You do not want to be rigid. “When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.” – Elon Musk 3. Ritualise your motivation Another way to make motivation who you are, not just part of who you are, is to ritualise it. Make motivation a habit, not just something that you do ‘’from time to time’’.  Motivate yourself every day. Wake up in the morning and remind yourself of what matters to you. What you are doing is going to pay off one day. Visualise how you will feel when you achieve your goal and the things it will bring you: money, power, sex and fame. All what is between you and these things is hard and smart work. I have my own personally-written motivation speech read every morning. The speech reflects my deepest desires. Nobody can unlock its massive power but me. I read it aloud and I feel the words reverberate in my soul. Make motivation a habit. 4. Adapt, not adopt While good motivation articles may provide guidance, they do not provide answers because only you can find them. People who write about motivation do not know you as well as you know yourself. Tailor mass-produced motivation articles to your own individual needs, experiences, tastes and intelligence. For example, if a motivation article suggests that you do the task you dread the most in the morning while you are an afternoon person, you are not going to do it in the morning. You can see how a motivation article can provide you with an idea; do what you are scared of the most when you are at your best. However, ‘’when you are at your best’’ varies from individual to individual. Adapt what you read to your uniqueness to concoct personalised motivation. 5. Take breaks and make them count Ignoring breaks — I have been there. You would like to think that you are strong and resilient, and you probably are, but ignoring breaks is not going to get you anywhere. Just like muscles need rest to reduce lactic acid build-up after a hard workout, so does your motivation. However, you do not want to wait until you are burnt out. This mistake cost me a lot. Make time for your break every week or every couple of weeks at max. A full day of rest is also part of your motivation because you will be looking forward to it when you are working hard. Make your breaks count, too. No mobile phones or anything of the sort. You have been straining your eyes all this time looking at screens and documents. You need to give all of you a break on your free day. Light exercising is okay, but it should not exceed 20 minutes. Avoid anything and anyone that may deplete your will power reserves – including difficult friends.   Take breaks and make them count. You will come back stronger. Conclusion Personalised motivation is the most powerful motivation. It is motivation that is deeply attached to your idiosyncratic needs, tastes, experiences and logic. Mass-produced motivation articles provide nothing more than guidance. They are a starting point, not an answer to a deeply personal question; how can I be and stay motivated? If you’re sick of your situation — your partner is driving you up the wall, you’re frustrated with your job, you’re tired of feeling overwhelmed — realize that the stress and frustration you’re experiencing has nothing to do with what’s happening right now in this minute. The stress you’re experiencing is a resistance to what is.  Instead of focusing on the right-here-now moment, the focus of your thoughts is on the projected and imaginary future state in which your current situation remains the same, or is worse. Stress comes from the anticipation that there’s no end in sight. Take any stressful situation you have going on and ask yourself: “Where does the misery exist?” Is it here in this moment, or is it when you’re thinking about the imminent journey that this situation may travel, extending the misery and the strife? Your heightened anxiety arises from the imagined future state.  Now get really present. Shift your attention internally to the sensations in your body. Drop any stressful thoughts for a second. Ask yourself “What’s real this very second?” Nothing is too stressful in the present moment, right? Here are three real ways to reframe your stress: 1. Acknowledge that you’re resisting what is. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed and miserable, many times this simple acknowledgement will transform your resistance into acceptance. But let’s be clear :  I’m not talking about resignation where you’re not going to do anything about your situation. By acknowledging your resistance to what is you can shift from reaction to response. When you’re responsive you can act. When you’re responsive you are present and powerful. When you’re responsive you’re not stressed.  A practical example is when you’re stuck behind a really slow driver. Your reaction is to get angry. Simply acknowledge that you’re resisting what is and see what happens to your anger. 2. Acknowledge that your stress doesn’t exist now. Your stress exists in your imagined future. Don’t paint a miserable future but tell yourself a different story and get present in the now. Forget the past, drop the future, and simply be with what is right now. It’s a moment, and every moment is manageable. 3. Envision a better future. Here’s a bonus step — and it’s definitely my favorite if you want to do more than just find relief: Fast forward to the vision you’d like to be true, whatever you imagine that future state for you is. See the perfect scenario that would make you happy tomorrow, or two months from now, or three years. Now tell the story backwards and explain to yourself how the current situation was absolutely necessary, absolutely on purpose, to get you to this new place. Telling the story backwards is powerful because it doesn’t just remove the stress from the current circumstance (the imagined future state) but it puts the current situation in a light that allows you to automatically shift into gratitude and purposefulness. That’s way more enjoyable than stress. These reframing tips can help anytime you get knocked off your center or feel overwhelmed. Practicing them regularly can recondition you to a state in which stress and anxiety are the exception and not the norm.
