“Mental Modeling” Shore
I believe that as one takes a photograph, they are not always thinking about it and why they are taking the photograph. Maybe you are taking picture of something because it is pretty or it is a memory you won't want to forget. No matter the reason, you have a reason for taking it. The you dive deeper into photograph and taking photos, you begin to think more as you take photos. You plan and you frame certain photographs in different ways to make them most appealing to look at. Your perception can changes as you photograph and when you change environments. You may have had an initial plan going into in and environment, but one you get there it changes based on your perceptions when actually taking the photographs. You may not always be aware of this change, but when you are it becomes a very mindful and learning experience. Photography is not simple at all. “It is complex, ongoing, spontaneous interaction of observation, understanding, imagination, and intention.” This part of the reading is very true. As we see the environment we are going to photograph, our perceptions may change and we take photographs that we originally did not imagine. It is so important to be aware and open to the environment, only then will you truly get the best photographs in my opinion. You must be aware of the ongoing nature of the world as you photograph and be ready to take many different photographs from the different perceptions you may have of the environment.

This picture caught my eye because of the reflection in the puddle of water on the ground. The water is so still in the puddle that it makes the reflection so clear and vivid. The reflection is a gorgeous reflection of the buildings and the beautiful sunset. The colors that are coming from the sun and are reflecting in the picture are stunning. The sun coming through gives the image a gorgeous orange/peach tint that gives the buildings and atmosphere a very calm feel to it. I also love how the people in the photograph are just going about there business. They are just living their life. You an tell this was not a staged photograph which I love. It is real life and it just happened. The photographer saw the ability for this gorgeous photograph and took the chance to model it beautifully.

“The Mental Level” Shore
As reading The Mental Level in the Stephen Shore text, many different parts stood out to me. The sentence that stated, ““Pictures exist on a mental level that may be coincident with the depictive level – what the picture is showing – but does not mirror it” really stood out to me. Talking from my point of view, I do not always think about the behind the scenes of the picture and the fact that it is more than a picture. The picture is its own depiction of the scene and not just an identical replication of it. You as the photographer focus on certain parts of an area and photograph that. Different people then, can focus that picture in on in many different ways. The way that people focus their eyes and view on pictures is not something we think about typically. Sometimes there will be a lot of mental space for us to focus on and sometimes there is less. The amount of mental space all depends on the photographer and how they frame the image. It is up to the photographer and their perception and decisions. No picture will turn out the same for two photographers because of the different viewpoints they have. Changing just the main focus of the image can and will completely change the mental space of the photograph.

I chose this photograph for a few different reasons. First of all, I chose this photograph because of the light that the photographer captured. The light coming through the trees really stood out to me. You can tell by the light coming through that it is getting close to dark. Yet, there is still some light shining through the trees to keep the picture well light. I also loved the way that the car lights looked in the darker space near the ground. Another reason I chose this photograph was the shadows that are present in the car windows. These shadows really jumped out at me and added another detail that I thought was interesting about this photograph. Overall I just really enjoyed the different pieces and levels of this picture and how well they worked together.

The photo that I selected for this assignment to examine is one that was taken by a friend of mine while we were in Disney World. This picture showcases probably the most iconic castle that there is, Cinderella’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom. The detail and lights that are in this photo is what draws me to it. I love that you can see the laser lights that shine through the sky from behind the castle during the show. Also, the projections on the castle are so vivid on the castle. This photo has beautiful color and detail that really bring to life the magic that Walt Disney World tries to bring to every persons day. This photo also includes many people in front of the castle as they admire its beauty and colors. I love that this photo captures the people who are there and not just the castle itself. The people truly show how popular and wonderful this place is. I think it is also important to point out the light pole in the bottom left side of the photo. The part of this photo that really just continues to stand out to me are the laser lights in the background and the way that they frame the castle in this photo. This photo is a product of beautiful set up, lights, and perfect timing.

“The Depictive Level” Shore
As I began to read the 3rd chapter in this book, one statement immediately resonated with me. This statement was  “where as a painter starts with a blank canvas and builds a picture, a photographer starts with the messiness of the world and selects a picture.” I just believe that this is so important to note as we take photos and find new ways to look at things. We, as photographers, all have a different view on the world and photography is a very special way that we get to showcase our view of the world around us. We all see the same things, but maybe not in the same way. With photography we get to frame, time, and focus on different things that we personally see and find interesting. Throughout this project it was really interesting to see this in action for me as I took photos with my friend. We went together to different places and took pictures of similar things, yet our photographs are completely different since our perspective is different. It was cool to see the different ways to fame different pictures we took. I also love how the text brought up the fact that if you “take one step and something hidden comes into view.” This is also very important to remember as you take photographs. I realized it a lot as I was taking photographs for this assignment. I would be focused on a subject and then move slightly and notice yet another possible subject. It can be very interesting to me to see how many different subjects are all within a small amount of space. Many times I do not notice this, but when I am looking through the lens of camera I do. One last part of this chapter that stood out to me was when it brought up how, “ the world of a photograph is contained within the frame.” This was very relevant to myself and the photographs I took for this assignment. Framing is very important to photographs. I love that I get the opportunity to frame each picture and what I want to showcase around me in them. It can be very interesting to me to see the different outcomes of a photograph as you change your framing of it.

I chose this photo because of the detail in the photograph. The photographer took them time to notice the colors in the leaves and bring them out within the photograph. The leaves all have different textures and details in them that are brought out the photograph. I was drawn to this photograph because as I have been taking my own photographs I have been trying to bring out as much detail as possible in the photographs. I think a lot of the times people do not notice the smaller details of things around them and it is important to notice them. Photographs like this one work to help you notice the beautiful details of the world around us.

“The Physical Level”
The second Chapter in The Nature of Photographs by Stephen Shore focuses more on the physical aspect of what photographs are. Chapter two is called “The Physical Level” and looks into the specifics of how a photograph can be captured. The chapter looks into the way that color plays into the perception n of a photograph. Color “adds a new level of descriptive information and transparency to the image” (Stephen Shore). This is very important to remember when taking photographs of the world around you. If a photograph contains no color, then it is going to be perceived differently than if it had color in it. When taking photographs sometimes it is best to just go with your instinct and see what that gives you. Not always giving a photograph a lot of thought before taking it is important sometimes. It is very important to just play with angles and see how they turn out. Having the intent to take a certain photograph can also be important. If you want to display a certain object or place in a specific light, then most likely, you will want to frame the picture in one way. This way, you will get the picture that you have designed. Trying different ways and taking that chance sometimes though will lead you to an unexpected, but wonderful photo. Until you take the photograph, you do not know what you might have been missing. Both chance and intent photographs are important for developing beautiful photographs. Using both together helps you to develop your best quality work.

Serious Play and Redefine Smartphone Photography
In the article, “Serious Play” by Teju Cole, the writer talks about Stephan Shore’s work. Shore photographs focus on the world around him. He focuses on the things that are familiar to him, but photographs them in a sophisticated manner to express what he sees. Now he is even on Instagram and has found a way to continue photographing what is around him. Shore helps “us think about the place of the unspectacular image on Instagram, because he has for so long defended the value of that kind of image elsewhere” (Cole). Shore also uses Instagram as a way to share his photographs. For many photographers, Instagram is used as a gallery for their work. This gives their work more opportunities to be viewed and shared with the world. Shore has been an excellent example for what this class focuses on so far. The photographs that I took were of things around me. I was able to use my iPhone to easily photograph and edit photos no matter where I was.
In the article, “Redefine Smartphone Photography,” many different points were brought up about the evolution of photography alongside technology. The article states that, “every shift in photography has been linked to a shift in technology.” As technology has shifted and become more advanced, so has photography. If you look at photography now it is very advanced and even smartphones have the ability to take photographs that have very high quality. Along with the advancements and photograph quality, smartphones have also made it increasingly easier to share your photographs. A photographer can easily share their work from their smartphone in a matter of moments. It has become a new way of photographers to reach their followers by using their smartphones to share on sites like Instagram or Tumblr. For this assignment, this article was very relatable as I used my phone to photograph things around me. Using subjects from my day-to-day life, I was able to look at them through a different perspective and find beauty in simplicity of the things I see everyday.
