Back on my Halsin brainrot but but BUT

Do you guys remember that he can draw??

He drew anatomical sketches of that dead drow and the tadpole so the man’s probably pretty good at drawing.

So he’s probably practicing also when he joins the tadfools and draws each of the companions as they train and go about domestic chores. Uuuh such a good prompt for a fanfic drabble!

can I just say how heartbreaking it is that Halsin continuously doubts someone could love him? when he says "my heart does not stir lightly... but it does now" he actually has to take a moment to breathe and close his eyes. like he's scared to admit it. like once he opens his eyes, the PC will be gone. even during his romance scene, you have to encourage him that this was what you wanted and that when he goes into wildshape and back into his regular form, PC tells him "it's okay, now come here" like he's TERRIFIED of scaring the PC because he rambles and apologizes profusely.

and when you solo romance him/decide to leave with him post brain, he tells you in the epilogue:

"Yet you chose me", like he STILL can't believe pc could've picked him over ANYONE SIX MONTHS LATER. This man wants to be loved but STRUGGLES to believe it once someone actually loves him and it's so heartbreaking. He's just a gentle giant. (also thank you @autistichalsin bc you've encouraged me to start analyzing Halsin with your posts)

Hello yes I am once again up in my feels because I am thinking of the fact that Halsin is SO obviously in love with the player.

The other companions care about you, and may or may not feel romantic love for you. Halsin loves you by default. He longs for you. The way he hugs you in the epilogue, the note he sends you if the Shadow Curse isn't broken and he stays behind, the way he's the ONLY character who has ZERO conditions where he will break up with the player if romanced. It makes him so different from the others and it's part of why I love him so much- knowing that that love is ALWAYS there, no matter what choices the player makes.

God okay so I've been playing my Durge run (where I sadly had to 86 Halsin, that shit HURT but at least i got to see the angry walk and see him yell at and completely wreck my squishy little evil sorcerer)

But my friend and I just got to act 2 and we saved the grove in this run. goddAmN i forgot how much this man makes my heart race at the start of act 2

The way rescuing Thaniel quickly became PRIORITY NUMERO UNO as soon as this man said he wanted to "thank me properly" and "show me how grateful he is" once the curse is lifted 🥵 SIR

This man is smitten with you the minute you get to the shadow cursed lands. The hope in his eyes when he realizes a hundred years of hard work is finally going to pay off because YOU HELPED HIM.

My Hc has always leaned towards Halsin being completely touch-starved and doesn't feel like he deserves to have a lover because he knows himself, he knows how obsessive he can get, and finding a partner that's anything more than one shared night of passion isn't something he can allow himself to have until he's lifted the curse.

How long has it been since he had any companionship besides his animal friends at the grove? 😭

I'm sure he was friends with Rath and Nettie, but there's still that barrier that he has to keep up as Archdruid, and I just don't see him breaking that barrier of professionalism to be with anyone at the grove since he can't let romance distract him from his duties, especially since one slip-up ((getting captured trying to find a way to break the shadow curse)) lead to near-disaster for his grove 😭

Halsin who sees you as the center of his orbit. Halsin who keeps you grounded while all other companions have large obstacles to overcome. Halsin who will make sure you're alright above all else. Halsin who is the one who takes care of you, after a battle, after sex, any and every time you need him. Halsin who puts himself last. Halsin who never asks for much. Halsin who others rely on endlessly. Halsin who just wants to be close to you, no matter in what way.

Halsin has my entire heart 💚. I'll peel his fruit for him, braid his hair, wash his back, clean his wounds until they've healed. During the adventures, I'll bring him books to read, listen to his teachings about nature, learn from him how to tell edible and non-edible berries apart, bring him honey and honeycomb every time I see a beehive. I'll show him patience, affection, attentiveness and a shoulder to lean on whenever he needs. Anything for him🥺🌻🍯

Best analysis EVER

I always felt like the man really started to have deep feelings for tav the moment he realised they cared about him.

At first I was like "But.. honey it's YOU that I want, I don't care about anyone else" in a romantic way of speaking

I did a whole game just to end up only with him because the first time I saw him, I knew I would be head over heels for this man. And besides the little reminder about the opening relationship, when he's with you, he always expects to be the second choice. But then, when you show him he's actually more than that, man.. there's just something different going on with him, something that changes from his natural way of thinking

I just love how complex he is and I just know that when this man looks at someone he REALLY loves, he can't see anything else around

Man, in Halsins confession he is SO "I follow my heart wherever it goes, I go wherever nature wills me. Before we start anything you must know I don't want to take you away from anyone else, I don't want to stop you from being with other people or going wherever you go and you cannot stop me from being what I am"

So the very good communication, clear statement: I want a non exclusive connection with you where we share our bodies together but don't try to control each other's paths/decisions/relationships

And its like oh! That's cool. You're straight up, and this sounds like just a physical addition to our friendship, no strings attached, alright. He WAS clear that he sees love and sex as different (I've had many lovers but my heart does not stir easily, it stirs now) so he IS clear he has real feelings but it's presented fairly casually? And very like 'no big deal if you don't feel the same!"

But then you sleep with him.

And oh my GOSH I can't be the only one who saw that man fall HEAD OVER HEELS IMMEDIATELY. And be like, super insecure about it as well as super upfront? The dichotomy is intense!

He NEVER assumes you're going to choose him or want to be around him any more than usual, and seems genuinely grateful and surprised every time you do. It's like he was setting himself up to be a side piece whether you were in a relationship with someone else or not when this started BUT

He ALSO is very very open about his feelings. "My heart. My love. I was lost until you pulled back the veil." And many many more deeply, deeply felt words. He's in love, AND he kind of assumes this whole thing is temporary.

I say that because of his ending. He says he's leaving, and he's clear the way he was in the beginning - no matter his feelings, he goes where nature wills. So there's consistency there. But he is GENUINELY surprised and DELIGHTED if you say you want to come with him.

My analysis is that he never once let himself believe that he COULD have something more with the PC. He never changes who he is, he's always upfront- if he wants to take another lover at Sharess Caress or bang a friend he has that right and he genuinely wants the PC to do the same if that's what they want too, he doesn't want to get in the way and he doesn't want anyone getting in his way. But. But

His heart does not stir lightly. And it does now

I don't think he's fallen in LOVE in a long time, and he can't believe he's going to commitment from a partner, he thinks he's just going to get a taste of you before you move on.

Being Polyamorous doesn't mean not having dedicated partners, it means not trying to stop your partner from doing what they want. It means being free to sleep with others, and to not stop your partner from leaving if they choose to go elsewhere. The way he words it in the beginning sounds like he means " if passions fade you move on, you follow your heart where it leads"

He just never expects YOUR heart to lead to him

And when it does, he is so, so surprised and grateful and lucky and honored.

He's such a complex character and so different from how I've seen romances shown in video games, movies, books so far I really like him.

Emerald Grove Group Timeline

One thing that’s confused me about act 1 is when people have arrived in the emerald grove and left it. We have a lot of moving parts going on so let me list them all out.

Spoilers below for some Emerald Grove quests and secrets

Arriving

The Teiflings - they arrive being chased by a gnoll party as we know many of the Teiflings saw their friends killed by goblins and gnolls before arriving at the grove.

The Gnoll party - this is the group that attacks the Teiflings initially and kills people like Lihala, Alfira’s mentor.

Dissected Drow Goblin party - the drow being dissected by Halsin attacked Halsin and Nettie while they were meditating.

The shadow Druids - the three rats that are getting Kahga to do the rite of thorns.

Aradin’s Crew first arrival - they have to arrive at the grove not being cashed by goblins. This includes Aradin, Remira, Barth, Liam, the three dead adventurers at the bridge, two new dead adventures in the goblin camp (I believe they are new), and Brian the dwarf being roasted.

Wyll- he arrives after the nautiloid shows up because him and Karlach get on it while in the hells.

Findal- the Hafling/Gnome in the underground passage who’s knocked out.

Goblin tunnel party - these are the goblins that are in the tunnel to the grove between the prisons to the left side of the gate.

The Gate goblin party - this is the goblin party we fight outside the grove.

Aradin’s crew second arrival - Aradin arrives outside the grove with only Remira and Barth

Zorru’s scouting party - Zorru and the Teifling who we find being eaten by the Ogrers went scouting and ran into the Githyanki on the risen road near the mountain pass.

Nymessa and Damays - the Teiflings who find Lae’zel in the goblin camp. They get in before the second goblin party attacks.

Leaving

Aradin and Halsin - Halsin joins Aradin’s crew to investigate the abandoned Selûnite temple

Zorru’s scouting party - either left before entering the grove to scout ahead or left right after arriving with main Teifling party

Nymessa and Damays - leave to check out the nautiloid explosion.

Grove Gate Policy

Halsin’s Grove policy - while Halsin is at the grove, anyone can come in. He freely offers shelter to the Teifling refugees and lets Aradin’s crew to set up camp.

Kagha’s and Zevlor’s Grove Policy?

This one is a bit confusing because we know that Kagha wants every non Druid out of the grove but during the ‘open the bloody gate cutscene’ we have Kanon telling us that he was ordered by Zevlor to not let anyone in. If you wait to trigger the dialogue, you can hear Aradin yelling to go get Zevlor and Kanon yelling back that he’s been informed. Once the battle is over and if you avoid triggering the confrontation cutscene, Aradin and Zevlor have dialogue where Aradin says he blames Zevlor for not opening the gate. We also have Remira saying they shouldn’t have trusted the Teiflings.

But we also know that the grove was expecting Halsin to return. Was Zevlor going to keep the gate closed until he could verify it was Halsin? Or was Kagha going to keep Halsin out to preform the right of thorns?

So I believe that when Aradin and Halsin left the grove, they were expecting an easy return but Kagha has Zevlor keeping a tight hold on who comes in and out. This is also why I think Wyll showed up before Halsin left.

Known Grove Activities

What have these people been doing?

We know from the banter between the Teifling couple that the Teiflings were on the road for 3 days before being attacked by gnolls and goblins.

Halsin has to dissect the Drow and realize the tadpoles are different from regular tadpoles.

Zevlor and Aradin get to hate eachother. These two haven’t met before the grove so in that window of time where they meet before Aradin leaves with Halsin, they grow to hate eachother a lot.

Kagha is able to turn the grove mostly against the outsiders. This was probably easy for her as there were multiple stressors on the grove.

Kagha being influenced by the shadow Druids.

Arabella tries to steal the idol and gets caught.

Proposed timeline

Shadow Druids make contact with Kagha and influence her to believe the rite of throne is needed to keep the Grove safe from the absolute cult.

Halsin and Nettie are attacked by the Goblin party led by the male Drow.

Halsin dissects the male Drow and finds out the tadpole is different.

The Teiflings are attacked by the Gnolls and many are killed by goblins as they flee to the grove.

Halsin convinces the other Druids to let the Teiflings stay.

Zorru’s scouting party leaves the grove. (This can happen anywhere between Teiflings arriving to Nymessa and Damays investigating the crash).

Aradin’s crew arrives at the Grove. He most likely didn’t come across any goblins because he didn’t know the temple was filled with goblins.

Aradin and Zevlor have conflict most likely over Aradin being okay with Halsin accompanying him and probably Aradin being confrontational.

Halsin leaves with Aradin putting Nettie in charge of keeping the dissected Drow secure and Kagha leading the grove.

Kagha convinces the other Druids they need to preform the rite of thrones.

Zorru returns from scouting and tells everyone about the githyanki.

Nautiloid crashes at night

Wyll arrives at the grove and endures himself to the Teiflings

Nymessa and Damays leave to investigate the crash and return.

Final is ambushed by goblins while gathering herbs and is knocked out in the underground passage.

Arabella tries to steal the idol and gets caught.

Aradin and his remaining crew return to the grove followed by the Goblin party and the player party.

So yeah, that’s my rough reconstruction of what’s happened at the grove before we arrive. Lots of moving parts so let me know if I miss anything!

Short blurb below

Motes of magic twinkled in the air unaware that their master had just met a righteous gruesome end. The remains of the myrmidons fizzled out of the physical plane with minor fanfare. 

Dame Aylin excused herself and the rest of the group slowly put themselves back together. Shadowheart tended to wounds and Karlach immediately began rifling through the pockets of the newly deceased. 

Sorrel’s heart still beat at a frantic rate. She knew she aught to be used to chaotic rhythm of battle, it had been her entire life for countless weeks now. However there was something about a battle against a mage that made things more dire, the raw power that could be summoned with the most flippant of motions was frightening. Still frightening. 

“Are you alright?” 

His voice was muffled by the ringing in her ears, but unmistakable. Looking up into his bright eyes, any response died on her tongue as a gentle swipe of his fingers brushed over her cheek. 

Rolan looked down at her with a worried expression, tension written into the creases at his brow. He had reacted quickly to the combat and despite his teacher’s failings he orchestrated the weave around him flawlessly. Even Gale had given him a firm pat on the shoulder.

“yes,” the response came out as an exhale. “I’m sorry.”

Confusion overrode his worry, “Whatever for? My mast-Lorroakan chose his fate when he made such nefarious intentions known. You did well to try to persuade him from such routes, but he is-was a vain and cruel man.”

The tiefling dropped his hand back to his side, acutely aware that it had lingered on her skin for quite some time. “You have nothing to apologize for.”

Sorrel winced, “But your apprenticeship, your plans, all of it. I…I mucked around in your life again.” The last part came out a cautious whisper. 

Rolan audibly sucked in a breath, glimmering eyes searching the crown of her head for the words he wasn’t sure he could say. 

“You did. And I thank you for it,” Sorrel’s bright eyes met his, “I don’t know if I could have found the strength to push back against him. I wanted so bad for all of this ...to mean something.”

Just as she was about to open her mouth a crooked grin silenced her. “No more apologizing.”
