DPxDC Idea
I had a little idea an have no time to actually write a fic, so I just wrote a sorta-summary and am posting it like this.
This is inspired by the game Home Safety Hotline and may contain hints to spoilers for that game. It's really clever, I really like it. I recommend you play it if slightly spooky without any "real" horror appeals to you.
Alright, Danny's been Ghost King for a few years and has realized more than just his usual rogues make their way to the living world, and a lot of those ghosts don't stay in Amity. By himself, it'd take forever to track down all those spirits and specters that are out causing mischief. Luckily, not many that escaped his notice are all that powerful and could only cause minor disturbances, just enough to get noticed by the living.
Many people outside Amity don't even recognize the activity as ghosts, so they blame other sources. Scratching in the walls is mistaken as mice, whispers and apparitions are mistaken as hallucinations and carbon monoxide hallucinations, attempted overshadowings mistaken as stokes or migraines. In this day and age, where does everyone turn to when looking for advice or how to solve problems? The internet.
Team Phantom devise a method to try and track down ghosts that are stuck or tormenting the living by building a website meant to look like a help hotline, and with some algorithm trickery make it one of the top options when searching for signs similar to ghost presences. Add some bits and bobs to make it appear as a more normal-looking website on any computer affiliated with government organizations, and you’ve got some protection from the GIW.
Calls start slowly, so the three of them can handle it by themselves. Once more people are calling, they decide to start a call center. They hired some trusted people around Amity and even a few ghosts who want to help. To get around worrying about the ghosts messing with the tech while personally taking a call, they decide to automate the system to record caller’s reports for the employees to listen to, and then send a report back, offering their services to bring the spirit back to the Realms.
It’s been surprisingly lucrative, and Danny hasn’t had to dip into his kingly funds much other than at the start. He still keeps prices low, just enough to not garner suspicions at offering a free service while paying his workers fairly (he doesn’t want to know why some of the ghosts want mortal money). What he’s started having more trouble with is not enough employees to take the calls. Sometimes ghosts lose track of time and don’t show up for their shifts (he doesn’t blame them, time gets weird in the Ghost Zone), and he’s run out of people he trusts who want the job.
Eventually he decides to put out an ad, deciding he’ll slowly trust whoever takes the job with a little more information over time, see how they react, and measure to see if they’re trustworthy.
What he doesn’t think about is how posting it on the website will let more people than just those that live in Amity apply.
Meanwhile, in Gotham, one Cassandra Cain is looking for a job. She doesn’t need the money, B gives her access to way too much, but she wants the experience. She’s at the age she’s heard most kids get a job, and she wants to see what it’s like.
And she quickly found out retail and fast food are NOT for her. She doesn’t think those conditions are fit for anyone, honestly. She’d have to see if she could get Bruce to work on that. But that still leaves her out of a job. She got overwhelmed with a lot of people, so virtual options would probably be best, and something that let her interact with people without having to speak. There weren’t a lot of options out there, and she wasn’t skilled enough with a computer yet to take programming ones.
That’s when she found the listing for the hotline call center. Based in a small Illinois town, but had virtual options, listen to recorded customer calls, diagnose their issue, and send an information packet on potential next steps. It was indirect, could also help her practice her reading, and flexible. It was perfect.
It didn’t take long to hear back after she applied (Danny was freaking out, he didn’t think anyone outside Amity would apply. He’d turn this kid down, but she’d mentioned her difficulties with speaking in her application and SWEETY YOU DONT MENTION STUFF LIKE THAT ON AN APPLICATION. But she said the job would be perfect for her and he just couldn’t…) and she got the job!
Her first day rolls around and she’s given access to the database. A lot has been redacted, but she has descriptions for common problems like mice, carbon monoxide, black mold, etc. she gets her first call recording and carefully reads through the entries before selecting the one that sounds right. She sends it off and waits for the next. The calls come a little too regularly, with too similar intervals between them, so she figures her new employer is testing how well she’s doing (Danny’s giving her previous resolved calls that weren’t anything supernatural. She even got the ants right! He had even gotten that wrong!)
Eventually, her shift ends and she tells her family how well her first day went at dinner. They congratulate her and go on patrol as usual. The next day, things ramp up a little.
She logs into the database at the beginning of her shift and noticed some new entries. She now had access to descriptions of shades, blob ghosts, will o’ wisps, and more minor spirits. She gets a recording reminding her all this info is confidential and that she’s not allowed to share it with anyone. She’s a little confused, but she reads through each just as carefully. The calls come less regularly, so she figures she’s actually connected to the system now (Danny gave her access to the most common ghosts they get calls about and is listening in while he’s handling ghosts to make sure she doesn’t get anything she’s not prepared for).
Her shift ends and over dinner, she mentions that she’s had to diagnose some odd things. They assure her there’s more pests and hazards out there than you’d expect. She doesn’t tell her family about the distraught woman haunted by the Ecto-Echo of her husband’s habit of making her coffee every morning after he passed a few weeks ago. Or the person who had a Shade masquerading as their shadow. Just about one of her caller's cockroach problem.
The next day follows a similar pattern; more entries, slightly more powerful ghosts, reminder that the info she's been given access to is confidential and could get people hurt if it got in the wrong hands, congratulated for her good work, read through carefully and learn signs of each, diagnose calls, before calling it a day (Danny was so proud of her, she'd only confused a blob ghost with a ghost animal once, and it hadn't caused him any trouble when he went to collect them).
She'd used the bat-computer to check up on some of the callers she'd diagnosed, and they seemed to be doing fine. Some had posted about their weird experiences on their social media and how her employer had somehow helped them, but often didn't quite know how (Danny liked to hide his powers, so most of what customers saw was him using ghost tech. When it couldn't be solved with just a quick souping, he had to pull a little ghostly trickery while the customer wasn't watching). She didn't know how her boss was somehow across the world multiple times a day to help clients in different countries, but he seemed to at least be helping people. She started not having any stories she could tell her family at dinner.
At some point, she heard reports that one of the speedsters probably messed with time travel again before clocking into her shift. She had almost all the available entries and had gotten very good at recognizing tricky cases. She answered a recorded call, just like at the beginning of each of her shifts, but this one was a little different. Danny had sent out an announcement to be on the lookout for a specific phenomena that often occurred after shifts in reality, as they were highly dangerous and needed to be dealt with swiftly.
She studied each entry and paused on what she was supposed to keep a careful eye out for. Revenants, corpses that came back to life, often seen shambling around the graveyards they were buried in. Something about that sounded familiar. A section in their entry said the person brought back often had a ghost in the Realms (which she still didn't know what that was) that was in terrible pain from shifts in reality trying to pull them back to their body, but the separation of dimensions preventing them.
Expectedly, she did get a call from someone convinced there was a zombie wandering somewhere along the east coast. She double checked it couldn't be anything else before submitting it and notifying her boss.
Curious, and she knew no one would be in the batcave around this time of day, she brought her laptop with her down to the bat-computer. She found cameras in the area the caller reported, and froze at what she saw. Shambling across an abandoned street was a rotting corpse. It really did look like a zombie. It was covered in dirt, wearing an old-fashioned suit, and had skin sloughing off its bones.
But what Cass could only focus on was how much its movements read that it was in pain. It was suffering in such a horrible way its mindless being didn't even deserve. It was horrible.
Then, there was a flash of green and an area of the cameras were covered in static. The glitched portion somehow read with kindness and pity. It slowly approached the corpse, simple reaching out gently (what was presumably a hand), ignoring the way it lashed out. It suddenly fell, caught and slowly lower to the ground by the strange being she couldn't see. It closed the thing's eyes before carrying it off in the direction the map said a graveyard could be found.
After that, she finished her shift and went to dinner. Her family asked if she was alright, and she only replied it'd been a long day.
She clocked in early the next day and messaged her boss for more information on Revenants. Dinner that night was one of the few times Jason agreed to come by, and if he noticed how she kept glancing at him, he didn't say anything.
A week later, she asked her boss what might happen if a Revenant was exposed to, as it was called in its entry, a "Corrupted Ecto-Spring" ("...an ugly hole in the fabric of reality that connects the world of the living to the Realms. The ectoplasm that leaks through the tear stagnates and festers into toxic pools that kills humans and makes ghosts sick."). Danny requested a video call.

Wrote a little bit for my halfa!tim au. I’ll probably just write some one shots of the scenes I have in my head, but I have some background ideas I might post about here. Feel free to ask if you have questions or ideas.

Hey! I’ve been gone a while. I started college and have been a bit busy, but wanting reasons to procrastinate studying for finals is a great motivator to be creative and write.
Dp x dc au, very Tim Drake-centric, mostly me projecting my stress onto blorbos.
The bats had found blueprints for a strange machine that seemed to be powered by Lazarus water while investigating a secret government agency. They began constructing a prototype in the bat cave to test if it really could do what it said in the details. The technology is beyond what they could understand, so they were forced to built it as the instructions said, and as mostly expected, nothing happens when they tried to turn it on. They’re all busy with their duties, so they plan to disassemble it later.
One night, Tim is working on the bat computer, trying to solve a case before patrol, when he feel a familiar knot tighten in his chest. The stress of vigilantism, being a CEO, dealing with his family (especially Damian), and investigating has been building up and wants to be let out now. Not wanting to be seen or caught on camera, and not able to go back into the manor since he already had on some of his Red Robin gear, he found a place out of sight of the cameras and where he’d have a bit before anyone found him: the faulty portal.
He’s stepping in and his breath is catching in his throat. Tears pick at his eyes, so he reaches to peel off his domino mask. In the split second he can’t see, his foot catches on some loose wires and he trips, accidentally hitting an internal button when flailing for balance. He knows he’s in trouble as the portal starts to rumble and glow. His foots so tangled he can’t get out before the he disappears behind the newly torn, unstable vortex.
A few moments later, a stuttering, clawed hand reaches out and grasps the edge of the portal.
Tim Drake pulls himself from the the device, tearing wires out to get his foot out of the portal, making it destabilize and warp shut behind him, and he is not the same.
His hair is now glowing white, sparking with electricity and instability; his Red Robin uniform is inverted, shifted, and warped to be virtually unrecognizable from the original. Lazarus water leaked from his mouth as he silently sobbed in agony and a green miasma seeped through his glowing green mask instead of tears.
His chest hurt like there were shards of something broken stuck behind his ribs, but it didn’t seem to hurt nearly as much as the fact that his heart wasn’t beating. He was gasping for breath and expelling green-tinged clouds and toxic liquid, but there was no relief tied to it, nor need as if he was lacking oxygen.
He knew he was dead, he just didn’t know how he was still there.
He immediately froze when he heard the elevator door to the cave open and familiar boots step out.
How was he going to explain this to Bruce? He knew Bruce cared for him, and the entire reason Tim became a Robin was because one of the Robins died and Batman was going to get himself killed out of anger and grief.
Reflexively, he pushed his overwhelming worry and stress down, and it had an odd effect. Glowing lines sputtered across his body, taking all the ghostly weirdness and leaving behind a very confused but ultimately relieved Tim. He was just happy he could feel a heartbeat and could breathe for a moment.
Pushing the event to the farthest part of his mind, he lied to Bruce, claiming he was checking the machine and escaped just before it turned on and destabilized again, did his patrol, and finished some late night paperwork before it all came uncontrollably flooding back and he found himself a distressed ghost once again.
—————
Basically the premise of this au is Tim that gains an unfortunate addition to a stress disorder he likely already had, making him turn into a ghost whenever he loses his composure with no control of it other than his emotions. He is highly unstable since he is a ghost formed in a moment of high stress, he was created with impure ectoplasm, and from an imperfect machine. Seriously, they don’t know how to purify Lazarus pit water, so they did the equivalent of running it through a brita filter before using it. Danny at least got the pure stuff, not the yucky nasty sludge.
I have more ideas for this au, but I have a final at 8am tomorrow, so I need to get studying.

@mortiferumsomnum his human body drops dead. His parents weren’t exactly gentle while rummaging through his chest cavity, and even if it was while he was in ghost form, the damage translates to his human body. There could have possibly been two Dannies, and it been like a sort of “one isn’t complete without the other and they want to be put back together, sorta Steven Universe” situation, but his body was so damaged that his human half died. Luckily, both with his full death and regaining consciousness really slowly, he won’t experience much of the “one half of a whole” distress, he’ll just have to mourn the fact that he died and can’t un-go ghost.
For the past few days, I have developed a minor addiction to playing Stray. Of course, the first thing my brain did upon developing this new hyperfixation is combine it with another. Thus, my Stray dp x dc au formed.
It begins with the Fentons capturing Phantom and dissecting him. They discover his core and put it in a tube of ectoplasm and seal it. Without the energy supplied by his core, Danny’s body turns back human, shocking his parents so much the accidentally drop his core through the open ghost portal, losing it to the ghost zone.
Through another portal, it ends up in a different dimension. It ends up passed through different hands, each worse than the last. It’s first considering an otherworldly battery, capable of powering thousands of homes, until eventually its icy properties are discovered. Eventually, it becomes the interest of some ice-based villains and they begin preparations to turn it into a weapon.
Around this time, the largest villain team up in history was taking place. They had take over a huge building in Gotham for whatever their plans are, and the Bats were planning to infiltrate. However, before they could, they’re ambushed by a magic user that makes them split up. The magic user decides to tail and capture Robin, turning him into a cat for easier containment.
To me Damian would definitely be a black cat with cute white paws and a spot on his nose. He’s a kid, so he would still be a kitten. He seems like the type who would have long hair for that regal look, but I remember how scraggly and wispy my long hair cat was when she was a kitten, and that would be even funnier.
When he wakes up as a cat in an enemy base, he decides he’s going to take them down single-handedly as revenge. After escaping from the cage he was in, he starts sneaking around until he notices lights flickering trying to guide him somewhere. He didn’t trust it, but something in his gut told him to follow
Danny’s core had been stuck in the tube for years at this point, and a bit of his consciousness was starting to return, sans memories. He could feel that he was being plugged into machines and power was being drawn from him, but he didn’t want to reveal that he was conscious to these people. They didn’t seem very trustworthy. He had reached out into the system and gained access to the cameras one time when no one was around. There he heard his captors mention capturing an enemy and putting him into a form he couldn’t escape as. He also saw a black and white kitten leaving behind a cage that looked forced open. Feeling for this potential ally, he reached out his ghostly influence and tried to lead him.
When Damian finds Mr. Freeze’s room, where Danny’s core was being kept, he found one of the prototype drones that the core was meant to power, model D, version 14, and hooked the tube of ectoplasm up to it. It didn’t have any programming yet, so Danny had no trouble taking over it with his ghostly influence.
I don’t have a solid design for D-14 down yet, but my original concept is for it to look a bit like a firefly with the tube as the part that glows.
After this, I don’t have much planned out yet. Damian and D-14 go through the base, finding clever and creative ways to defeat the villains and recover Danny’s memories. Maybe the base is in a tower and they have to work their way up, and at the top, Danny gets to see the stars as he remembers everything.

I would love to and already have ideas, but I’m a little nervous to since the majority of my Batman knowledge comes from dp crossover content and fan works
Halfa Jason Todd au where he somehow ends up in the ghost zone and all the ectoplasm around him fixes him up but he turns into a ghost. Unfortunately for him he reverts back to the form he originally died in.
Danny finds this strangly colorful ghost kid freaking out and comes to investigate. Somehow Jason convinces Danny to give him a lift to the world of the living since he can't fly. Danny softened cause he interpreted this as "I'm so freshly dead I don't even know how to fly yet and I maybe wanna see my loved ones one last time"
They make it back to the living realm and Jason tries to use his communicator to contact Batman...only it doesn't work. Nothing works. He manages to use a computer to search up the Justice League, Gotham, Batman, the Flash, anything but its like they don't exist.
Jason is so stressed that he subconsciously changes back right in front of Phantom, who is shocked. Jason actually starts hyperventilating when he realized he changed back but didn't get any taller. In fact his clothes are practically drowning him. He rushes to a nearby bathroom to look in the mirror, only to see his very much alive 14 year old self staring back at him.
This had to be a nightmare.
On the bright side Danny now has someone to fight ghosts with him! He even has a cape! A cape!
Jason strait up lives in one of the Fentons spare bedrooms and eats with the family. The parents just think he's over a lot. Danny and Jason basically adopt eachother.
The batfam are thoroughly freaking out, especially after a month with no word from Jason. Bats thinks he failed Jason again. Meanwhile Jason is having the time of his afterlife driving a flying four wheeler the fentons made while taking pot shots at Skulker. He can fly now, this is just more fun. Plus it angers the Fentons whenever a ghost uses thier tech, so bonus points!
And if Skulker pops up less often after Jason dismantled his suit with his fists and raw fury before threatening to skin him and turn him into a hamsters coat...well no one can prove anything.

Ok, I still want to write a bit for this, but I don’t feel confident enough to write a full form fic, but I’ll write a little more in depth drabble-
Gotham already had a higher level of ambient ectoplasm than most other cities. The amount of death from the high level of crime in the city had increased it more and more through the years.
In an alley in a part of Crime Alley that had seen far more than its fair share of murder, a small wrinkle between dimensions was forming. On the flip side, in the ghost zone, a squabble had broken out between some minor ectoplasmic entities. Their attacks clashed, and one managed to snag the wrinkle, creating a tear that echoed through the Infinite Realms. The beings scattered, knowing better than to risk being sucked through the portal into a world without enough ectoplasm to sustain them.
In the world of the living, one of Gotham’s knights patrolled his streets. He was attracted towards the alleyway by the glow, the sound, and something deeper that called for him to find the portal. He entered the alley and was transfixed by what he saw. He reached for his communicator to contact his allies to investigate this familiar colored unknown when when it started.
The natural portal had no technology or base to stabilize it, so after a few moments of it staying open, it began to destabilize. It formed a vacuum, absorbing anything that might have crossed into the wrong dimension.
Red Hoot hit the gravelly pavement trying to find purchase on anything to keep himself from being pulled into the swirling vortex that felt like the Lazarus pit, but it was like the vacuum of space pulling him in.
As he crossed the threshold and was plunged into a dimension full of the very substance that brought him back to life, his senses were flooded with contractions. Up was down, down was up, there was no gravity but he felt pressed on by all sides. He felt like he was being burned alive and frozen to death. The Pit in his blood was screaming, but its dark cries were being drowned out as it felt like he was something lighter was filling its place. He felt like he was drowning and at the same time he was taking his first clear breath after recovering from pneumonia.
The portal he was slowly drifting away from finally closed with a soft whoosh, before exploding out into a powerful shockwave, sending the vigilante flying into the abyss as he was quickly losing consciousness.
Returning to consciousness was similar to losing it. Jason felt like it took several minutes to wake up at the same time it felt he startled awake quickly. His body felt foreign but also like it had returned to what it should have been and hasn’t for years.
Taking stock of his situation, he saw that he was still floating in the green abyss. There was nothing around him for what seemed like miles except for some random doors and floating islands. The next thing he noticed was that his helmet was gone.
He froze when he went to evaluate what else he had managed to lose in the portal explosion and saw his hands.
His regular gloves had been replaced by a pair he could recognize anywhere, even if the colors had been inverted and seemed to be glowing.
A quick glance at his body revealed that somehow he had indeed been put back into the Robin costume he had died in, cape and all. The red and the green had been switched, the yellow was purple, and the black was white.
The next problem he noticed was that he actually fit into the suit. He had long outgrown it years ago, so it shouldn’t be able to fit him like he had never taken it off.
It was while the panic was building over the changes in his physique that he caught movement out of the corner of his eye. A black and white shape was drifting through the green expanse he was stuck floating in. Squinting his eyes, he saw that it looked like a teenager.
He shouted to get his attention, voice sputtering a bit when he heard how young he sounded. Still, it got the strange kid’s attention. The stranger changed course, heading towards him.
When Jason asked the kid where he was and what happened to him, he regretfully explained that they were in the Ghost Zone, an infinite dimension where people’s ghosts go when they die.
Not knowing how to feel about that, Jason asked the stranger if he could take him back to the land of the living since he could move around in Zone. A sad expression passed the kid’s face, but he agreed.
On the way to what he explained was his parents’ portal, he introduced himself as Danny.
When they crossed through another vortex, Jason was surprised that gravity didn’t seem to affect him, leaving him still suspended in the air. Even if he was a ghost, his Robin costume still had a communicator. He tried it, turning it on and asking if anyone could hear him, but all he got in response was static.
He asked Danny if he knew where Gotham was, wondering if he could ask for him to take him home. He pulled out a green smartphone, looking up directions. When no results for anywhere called Gotham showed up, Jason grabbed the phone from him and started searching for anything. No results for Batman, the Justices League, not even any for Wonder Woman.
In his growing panic, he didn’t notice the increasing glow around him until there was a bright flash around him and suddenly gravity pulled him to the ground.
He felt like a metal bucket had been dropped on his head and he pulled it off while feeling his heart pounding in his chest for the first time since he woke up. He wasn’t complaining that he was suddenly brought back to life, especially since it wasn’t nearly as bad as the first time, but it could have been when he wasn’t several feet off the ground.
Once he could see, he realized that the bucket was actually his helmet, and his temporary halted panic returned full force. He was swimming in his Red Hood uniform, the leather jacket’s leaves going past his hands and several gun holsters had come loose since they weren’t snug against him anymore.
He scrambled for the phone he had dropped when he fell and found a camera app. When he saw his reflection in the device, he wanted to scream. Staring back at him was his fourteen year old face, cheeks still with traces of the roundness of youth. The white streak still sat at the front of his hair, only now it seemed to glow faintly.
Belatedly, he remembered that he had an audience and spun to look at Danny. The expression on his face was impossible to read, but he slowly drifted to the ground. Glowing rings passed over the ghost and in his place was a normal looking teenager with all the criteria to be adopted by Bruce. After many moments of staring at each other, finally Danny spoke, tone so sadly hopeful.
“I’m not alone.”

I’ve been having a lot of thoughts about this prompt since I first saw it.
Jason would obviously want to get back to Gotham, but he has to admit that protecting Amity Park with Danny is a pretty good gig. No bats bothering him about his methods, plus all his enemies are already dead, so he just has to make sure to not hurt them enough to kill them again and they can all take a beating. Plus, with the nasty ectoplasm out of him, he’s feeling better than he has since he died. Only downside is that he is now in the body of his fourteen year old self in a different dimension with no one keeping an eye on crime alley.
Most of my thoughts come from if the batfam manages to find their way through the infinite realms and to amity park. Jason and Danny would probably see them while in ghost mode and Jason would freak out.
“Danny, they can’t see me like this”
“They’re your family right? If they found a way to navigate through the infinite realms, which are literally infinite, to find you, they most likely won’t mind that you’re a little ghostly now”
“No you don’t understand. I was the second oldest. I at least had that I was taller than Dick to hold over him, but now I’m shorter and younger than /Tim/. I can’t handle the embarrassment”
“Oh”
Meanwhile the batfam is curious about the ghosts of this dimension and why they can’t find any undistorted pictures of them when they get access to a computer, so they don’t have any way to properly see them until they see them in person.
They pick up that Red Hood’s tracker came back online and leads them to the Fentons’. Since Bruce Wayne doesn’t exist in this dimension, they can’t use the investment ruse, so they’ll have some of them break in. Jazz or Danny chase them out with a Fenton Broom. So the batfam is just circling this house, repeatedly trying to break in but somehow getting caught and kicked out. Damian wants to just fight his way in but Bruce forbids it since he thinks they’re just normal children who might have stumbled across Rad Hood’s gear and brought it home, but they don’t listen to him trying to explain while they’re shooing him out. Every time after they’re kicked out, Jason reappears with a relieved sigh.
Eventually they see a ghost fight and see the inverted Robin ghost fighting with a familiar style, even if flight and ectoblasts are added, and Bruce thinks his fears have been confirmed.

I’m writing my own fanfic idea, bois. It’s gonna be a while before I release it, but it’s a bnha crossover with my favorite game. I’ve got a lot of the story elements mapped out, just needs some polishing and then writing. Wish me luck and motivation, lads.

Gordon commits minor arson (but only to hide evidence)
Another little thing for @forsea‘s professor Freeman au! It’s really fun to write for! I hope y’all enjoy it!
Gordon was having a surprisingly good start to his Friday morning. Him and Benrey had found the perfect position for early-morning cuddles, and even then, he’d been allowed to get out of bed to go to work; his usual rush to get ready after staying in bed for far too long went really smoothly, his arm wasn’t hurting, Joshua was being dropped off at school by his ex, and Benrey had ordered him some food to be picked up at lunch.
The only hiccup in his day was that the bus he took to the university was running a few minutes late. It was never early or on time very often, so it didn’t bring down his good mood; his students were used to him coming in right on time or a minute late. The ride was quiet, allowing him to do some paperwork before class. At a stop, he saw one of his students get on and sit closer to the front of the bus. He could tell that she knew he was there, but she was too tired to try and spark up a conversation. They saw each other on the bus a lot, but didn’t acknowledge it.
When they reached their stop, Gordon took a few more seconds to get up, putting his papers away, and was pretty far behind his student. He trailed behind her on the way to his classroom.
He was slightly zoned out while walking and basked in his good morning, and, for what felt like the first time in months, he wasn’t thinking about what happened or worrying about what could happen. He barely registered his student turning to walk into his door.
He was snapped out of his haze when he heard a crash from his classroom followed by a scream.
He started sprinting for the door, throwing his satchel off. He stopped himself on the doorframe, taking in the scene before him. Almost all of his students were at their seats, but were now all stood up and looking towards the front of the room. Next to a large cabinet in a front corner of the room, the student he shared the bus with was pressing herself against the wall, cowering from what was sitting in the dust of a broken ceiling tile.
In the middle of his floor, crouching and preparing to leap at his student, was a Headcrab.
Thinking of the consequences only caused him to hesitate for a moment as he remembered the zombies at Black Mesa. He pushed up his sleeve before pulling off the realistic silicone glove that covered his robotic right hand. It clicked and spun as it shifted back into a gun. He took aim and felt a sizable explosion as it fired, leaving a smear where the Crab once was.
He stood in place for a moment, panting as thoughts swirled in his head. He looked up to his class of shocked faces and the tearful face of the girl he’d saved.
Through the open door behind him, he heard the running footsteps of someone approaching. Thinking fast, he shifted his arm back and slipped on the glove while rushing to the cabinet. It was a spare storage space for the chemistry department and held many different chemicals. Digging through it, he took the first bottle that had a flammable warning label that he found and dumped it over the corpse.
“Get the fire extinguisher,” he told the girl, pulling a lighter out of his pocket. She rushed to the box on the wall that it was stored in as he set it alight. He took off his coat and pretended to pat the fire out when one of his colleagues ran in the door.
“I heard an explosion! Is everyone okay?” he asked.
“Yep!” Gordon replied with a nervous fake smile. He got ahold of the fire extinguisher and started spraying the flames. “I got startled by the tile falling and bumped into the cabinet. Don’t worry, I’ll clean it up.”
“Okay,” he sighed. “Good luck.”
Once the other professor was gone, he put the fire out completely. There wasn’t much left of the alien, but there was too much for Gordon’s liking.
“Hey, everyone,” he said, getting all the students’ attention. “Please… please don’t tell anyone about this. Any of this.”
“Dr. Freeman-” one of his students started.
“Please,” he interrupted. “I’ll bring you pizza, I’ll bring Joshua to class more often, I’ll let you meet my roommate, just, please-”
“Mr. Freeman.” the girl said firmly, setting her hand on his shoulder, cutting him off. “We won’t tell anyone.”
“But you’re going to have to answer some questions!” a student in the back shouted in a light tone, getting a chuckle.
“Yeah, I will. But only what won’t reveal too much,” he groaned. “For now, class is canceled. I’ll send out an email so you won’t be counted as absent.”
After the class was cleared out, he took out his phone.
“Hey, Tommy?” he said into the receiver. “How well can Sunkist smell? Wow, really? Do you think y’all could help me this weekend?”
The next Monday morning, the class excitedly chattered amongst themselves while waiting for their teacher to show up. There were only a few scorch marks left on the floor and the hole in the ceiling was covered with duct tape.
A few minutes after class was supposed to start, Gordon stumbled into the room with his hair down and light bags under his eyes. He glared at the damage to his room on his way to dumping himself into his chair.
“Well, I have some good news,” he announced. “We don’t have to worry about any more aliens trying to kill us. Sunkist helped us track down the last of them that escaped.” At the silence that followed, he reached into his sleeve and pulled off his glove before resting his chin on his right hand. “So, you had questions?”

Gun-no-more (most of the time)
This is my first piece for hlvrai! This is based off @forsea‘s professor freeman au and my headcannon that Gordon still keeps the gun-hand after Black Mesa, and that he can turn it into a robotic hand in a Transformers-esque transition. I wrote this in a few minutes, but I hope you enjoy this short tidbit!
---
“So, Feetman,” Benrey greeted, closing the door behind him. He had gone to the store for Doritos and had been gone for two hours, so Gordon was getting a bit concerned, but not too worried. “You know how you’ve been looking for a job?”
“Yeah?” he responded, turning his laptop around to show the countless tabs he had open and the job site he was on at the moment. “Not much has changed since you left. None of them sound right. I’m far too over qualified to work at a fast food joint, because they might want to know why someone with a PhD is going for such a low-paying job, but if I apply to one of the fancier places, they can dig deep into my background and find out that I'm responsible for wiping out the US military.” he ranted.
“Yo, that sounds like it sucks,” Benrey deadpanned, “but-”
“Not to mention,” he interrupted, “how am I going to get a job with this?” He motioned to the gun taking up the majority of his right forearm. “Why couldn’t that potion have just given me a normal hand? It was useful for a while, but now-”
Benrey shut the laptop and slapped some papers on top of it.
“I found you a job, Feetman,” he said, watching as Gordon picked up the papers before looking up incredulously at him.
“At a school?” he asked. “Do you understand how horrible of an idea that is?”
“What do you mean?” he questioned. “It’ll be fine… I think. Just audition or whatever it is you do.”
“I literally have a gun for a hand!” Gordon exclaimed. “I can’t even legally set foot on a school campus! We may have robbed a bank, but I won’t go that far. If I showed up for an interview, I’d be arrested on the spot! I could get my arm unprofessionally amputated again, but I can still feel shards of bone in it from last time, and I don’t want more. But if I don’t do that, what other options do I have? I can’t exactly hide my entire arm for the rest of my life, now can I!” He threw his arms up in frustration, but he sucked in a sharp breath as he felt something shift in the gun, thinking he would accidentally fire bullets into the apartment above.
When all that followed was mechanical whirring, he looked at what was happening. Metal was spinning and shifting, popping apart and clicking together, forming joints from tubes, leaving five fingers where five barrels once were.
They both blinked at the limb as Gordon experimentally moved his new hand.
“Well, uh, you were saying, Cringeman?” Benrey grinned.
“Uh, w-well,” he stuttered, thinking. “Being a professor does sound pretty inconspicuous…” he trailed off.
---
“Mr. Freeman?” he heard whispered next to him, snapping him out of the memory. Gordon turned to face one of his more quiet students. “Sorry, I tried getting your attention, but you didn’t notice.”
“No need to apologize,” he comforted, noticing how they must have been tapping the realistic glove over his right arm. “I don’t have any feeling in this arm, so I didn’t notice. What did you need?” As they asked their question, he noticed the conspiracy-prone students in the back typing away furiously at their computers.
