FMP Evaluation
Did I meet the brief
My project meets the brief of being a piece of visual communication that has a purpose and a resolved and developed outcome.
I knew from the beginning of this project that I wanted to create an outcome that would raise awareness and make a positive change in society. I believe my book does this. My book educates children aged 7-12 about online gaming and how the game online safely. It teaches warning signs, ways of staying safe online and how to get help and support.
My book is educational and is also fun. I have created a storyline that is lighthearted but holds serious and important messages. I made my story rhyme in order to set a pace for the tale but also to make it more fun and interesting to read.
Target market audience
The colours in my book are bright, bold and eye catching and are appropriate for the young target market audience of my book. The text is clear and easy to read and the typeface is appropriate for the theme and story of my book. It was important that my book was aimed at children aged 7-12 because this is just before and around the time that children start to play online games, therefore it is important they know how to stay safe on them before they go on them. Furthermore, my book is appropriate for families to read together to encourage the discussion of online safety between children, parents and carers.
Did I manage my time well
I managed my time affectively throughout this unit and believe I have used my time well to create a well developed, strong outcome. I found the timetable I created at the start of the project very useful as it allowed me to stay on track with my work and ensure my project developed affectively and consistantly.
What would I do if I had more time
If I had more time, I would consider how I could create sequels to the book or how I could approach other areas of online safety with a new story. I would not personally make any changes to my final outcome as I have developed it throughout the project to an outcome that I am very pleased with and believe is strong, educational and interesting.
Overall thoughts
Overall, I am very proud of my progress throughout this project. It is always daunting having an open brief however I feel I have stuck to what I have wanted to do and as a result achieved what I had initially wanted to achieve. I believe I have made my final outcome to a good, professional standard and have put a lot of effort in to ensure it was successful.

My Final Piece Book Outcome
This is the final printed outcome of my book. I have printed the pages on 300 gsm paper and hard back case bound it with cardboard and bookcloth. I have then cover it with a cover dust sleeve.
Overall, I am very proud of my outcome. I believe it looks professional and visually eye catching and interesting. It is great for the target market audience of children aged 7-12 and families and will encourage the discussion of online safety within families.
It tells a fun but educational story that surrounds the themes of online gaming safety and educates about ways of recognising warning signs, how to get help and how to stay safe online.

My final book cover sleeve
This is the final sleeve cover that I created for my book.
I decided o keep the front design of the cover the same as the inside cover page so that together it wasn't overwhelming and the overall image of the book was consistent. I chose one of my illustrations from my book to present on the back of the cover in order to give a hint of the story within the book. I then used one of my bubble illustrations as an area for me to write a small blurb about the book that would encourage children, parents and carers to read the book. I also  got an image of a barcode off of the internet in order to make my cover look professional. I also decided to include my daisy pattern on the inside flaps of the case cover in order to be consistent to the style and illustrations throughout the book. It was also a really affective way of asking colour to the cover. Finally, I listed three really good organisations that children, parents and carers could go to on the web to find out more information about how to be safe online. I included the title of the page in quotation marks so that the page would be easy for them to find.

Cover Sleeve design
I decided to roughly scamp out two different ideas for my cover sleeve in my sketchbook, both included different ways of displaying my book cover and also included different information I could include on the cover. For example on my second sketch, I decided I could have a section on one of the inside fold sheets on the sleeve, that lists organisations you could go to to get more information about online safety for children and adults. I also included different illustrations that I could present.
Once again, as with the title, I want my book cover to give a hint of the theme of the book, however I don’t want it to give the book away before the reader even opens the book, therefore deciding whether to show all of the characters on the front or just red was a tough decision to make.
There were aspects from both different design ideas that I liked, therefore I decided to take aspects from both when making my final book sleeve cover.

My hardback case cover
This is my hardback case covered book. I am very pleased with the outcome of this book binding method and believe that it has left me with a professional outcome that is perfect for the target market audience my book is aimed towards. I chose red bookcloth to cover my case bound book with because it relates to the red riding hood character in my story and is also symbolic of danger which my book is educating about (dangers online).

Case book binding book process
I then cut out the cardboard for the case cover. This was a rather difficult task as I needed to ensure I made the correct measurements and that each bit of cardboard was the same height and was level. I then spaced this out correctly on my red bookcloth for the measurements of my book, glued it onto the back of the bookcloth and then folded in the inside edges of the backcloth and glued them onto the other side of the cardboard. I then glued the outer inside page to the inside of the case cover and did the same for the back page of the book. This then left me with a hard case cover book.

Case book binding process
Next I glued the material ends to the top and bottom end of the spine of my book. I then folded in half the paper that I was using as the inside page that would attach the book to the case cover and glued it along the edge of my book. I did this on both sides of the book.

Binding my book pages
The next step was for me to bind my pages together. As my book is going to be sitting within a hard case cover, I knew whatever stitch bind option I decided to do, along as it was secure and kept the pages bound together it didn't matter.
First I mapped out the holes on the front of my book and then drilled them through the book pages. This gave me precise, neat holes for my thread to be stitched through. I then bound my book by stitching the thread in and out of the holes. After this my book was strong and each page was bound together.

Printing my book pages
I decided as I wanted to hard case cover bind my book, I needed paper with a high gsm. I purchased paper that was 300 gsm and then printed my pages on it on the large format printer.

My test print
I then did a test print of my final book pages. This test print confirmed for me that the margins were now in the correct place and that there were no further developments I wanted to make to the illustrations, text or page layout.
I was now ready to print my book pages.

Final book pages (2/2)
These are my final book pages. After doing the developments from my previous test trial I am now very happy with the final appearance of my book and there is not anything else that I wish to change or develop further. I feel each page is clear, bright and visually interesting and eye catching. The illustrations help tell the story in a lighthearted but educational way and the layout is clear and fun.

Book Trial 3
For my third test print I was able to see the effectiveness of the previous developments and also realised a few minor, final things that needed adjusting.
The needed developments were:
- To increase the inner margin on both sides of the page as I had now decided to bind my book with binding string rather than glue.
- To adjust any illustrations in order to comply with the new margin size
- To move in the clouds on the first double page spread in order to ensure no illustrations are lost within the bind
- To change around the colours of the bubbles on one of the wolf pages so that they are in a different coloured order to the other bubble page spreads
After I have done these changes I will then do a final test print to ensure my book works affectively and that there are no more changes or developments necessary. Doing lots of different print trials has been really useful as it has allowed me to continuously find things that I could improve and that I therefore developed further.

Book Development Trial 3 (2/2)
I had now done the developments that I found from my second trial and had also added a few coloured backgrounds within the book. This gave the book a lot more colour and made the book more fun and visually eye catching and affective. I believe I have the right balance of background coloured spreads to go well with the white background spreads and also the full colour double spreads, I believe anymore coloured backgrounds would have been overpowering.
I have also now added text (my story) to my book. After experimenting with different fonts, I decided I felt the most affective and relevant was Adobe Garamond Pro. I ensured the text was clear and readable for the target market audience of this book and set it as size 15.
Overall, I am really pleased with my book and believe it is visually interesting and the illustrations really bring the story to life.
