୨୧˚ . ✷ › MOTHER (2010) TV SERIES. Portraying Rena Michiki / Tsugumi Suzuhara

Kairi made her acting debut at the age of 5-years-old through her role as Rena Michiki, also Tsugumi Suzuhara, in the hit Japan TV series, Mother. Despite being young at the time, this really solidified her impact in the acting industry for upcoming child actors, as she managed to show off that children her age were more than capable of taking roles that weren’t just typical, happy children.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › CONFESSIONS (2010) MOVIE. Portraying Mirai Natsume

Though this role was no big role for Kairi, nor did it play a prominent part in her career, it’s one of her favorites she’s ever had to film her. At the time, she didn’t understand the plot nor did she take any particular interest in it, but after rewatching it as a teenager, she names it as one of her favorites of all time. This movie really changed her preference in TV dramas, and now as a teenager, Kairi overall prefers thrillers over comedies.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › MUROMO NO OKITE (2011) TV SERIES. Portraying Kaoru Sasakura

Admittedly, this series was one of her favorites to film. The cast and production were really kind to her, and she made a life-long friend with her onscreen brother. It’s not really known internationally, and though Engenes have watched it to support her past works, it never garnered enough attention to say “oh, this was a big part of her life.” However, in Japan, the impact of the movie on her career formally determined that Kairi was an incredibly diverse actor for someone of her age.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › BUNNY DROP (2011) MOVIE. Portraying Rin Kaga

Now this film is not amongst her favorites, however it’s one that she thinks about a lot these days. She had a lot of fun filming it back in 2010, but she quite honestly didn’t understand the difference between being someone’s natural child or adopted child, so when she first learned of it, she didn’t like being exposed to how differently a person regarded someone’s child depending on their blood. It really taught her that blood isn’t thicker than water.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › BEAUTIFUL RAIN (2012) TV SERIES. Miu Kinoshita

This one, more than any of the other films or series’ on this list, has really left a mark on her life —— both personally and professionally. She was six at the time of filming, seven when the show was first aired, and only 2 years into her career, but it officially made her a well-respected child actress in the Japanese acting industry. The show itself was really emotional for her, because it heavily reminded her of her grandmother, and therefore a series that she holds very close to heart.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › PACIFIC RIM (2013) MOVIE. Portraying young Mako Mori

Quite honestly, this a movie that Kairi does not really care much for or have any memories of. It did really well in Japan for a couple of weeks after it was released, however, had no impact on Kairi’s career because her role wasn’t that important in anyone’s eyes. That being said, this was the first time Ni-ki ever saw her on screen and the first time he ever had a “celebrity” crush.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › ASHITA, MAMA GA INAI (2014) TV SERIES. Portraying Kirara Sasaki / “Post”

The biggest thing that stayed with Kairi after filming this were the friendships that came with it. The three other leads in the film were all within her age range, and therefore incredibly easy to get along with and form tight bonds with. To this day, Kairi keeps up with them on an almost daily basis, and they’re the first people she visits whenever she’s back in Japan. However, the recognition and initial buzz that followed her name following the release of this series did have a relatively negative impact on her life. Viewers were not appreciative of the inaccurate portrayal of Japanese orphanages and received a lot of criticism from welfare organizations. Kairi didn’t really care because she wasn’t the one who wrote the script and she was only 11 anyways.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › WATASHI WO HANASANAIDE (2016) TV SERIES. Portraying young Kyoko Hoshina

Despite it being fairly recent (not really, but it wasn’t ages ago, either), Kairi has no recollection of ever filming this series nor watching it after it aired. It generally had no impact on her life, and she doesn’t care for it all.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › MIXED DOUBLES (2017) MOVIE. Portraying Nanaki Hidaka

Similarly to the previous listed show, Mixed Doubles is not a movie that Kairi cares much for. Though she enjoyed the filming process and got to film with her first on-screen brother again, she doesn’t remember much of the script or the impact that it had on her life.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › YOUR NAME (2016) ANIME. Voicing Yotsuha Miyamizu

Her first ever voice-acting role, and therefore one she holds very close to heart. Admittedly, prior to getting this role, she hadn’t read the manga series and did not initially understand the huge positive impact it would have on her life. It opened up a whole different world of acting and exposed her works to international audiences, and she’s still receiving praise from fans to this day. Jay, not knowing that she voice acted in the anime, was quite surprised when he heard a younger Kairi start talking on screen.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › ANOHANA: THE FLOWER WE SAW THAT DAY (2017) ANIME. Voicing Meiko Honma / “Menma”

Her favorite voice acting role of all time just because she reread the manga over and over again. When she was first offered the role, she quite honestly lost her mind and fan-girled over it for days after that. She can’t really rewatch the anime without getting weirded out from hearing her voice, but it’s still something she’ll talk about in high regards when recommending animes to her friends.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › POKÉMON THE MOVIE: THE POWER OF US (2018) ANIME. Voicing Margo

Although Kairi does not know a single thing about the Pokémon universe, she recall finding the entire script to this anime extremely funny. It exposed her to international audiences and garnered her more attention from casting agencies. However, this marked her final role in the Japanese acting industry before announcing a halt in any future projects. She moved to Korea soon after, prioritized becoming a trainee, and no longer pursued any acting roles.

୨୧˚ . ✷ › THE KING OF PIGS (2022) K-DRAMA. Potraying Lee Jihyun

Though it was a minor role, and though she was credited as a guest star for the appearances she made, this drama truly blew up Kairi’s popularity in Korea and internationally. This was the first time that most of her viewers were able to see her skills in acting and how diverse she was when it came to her roles. It also marked the end of her acting hiatus, with HYBE Labels stating that she would return to the acting industry while juggling her responsibilities as an idols upon request from her.

Admittedly, this was her absolute favorite to film because of how comfortable the atmosphere was and because of the friendships she made. Truth be told, she was extremely nervous to be casted as a main lead in a romance-thriller drama —— as was her love interest —— because she didn’t know if it would be well received by Korean Engenes specifically. Either way, she really did enjoy stepping out of her comfort zone when it came to portraying Harin, and learned a lot. It was received well by International audiences, and has called for more casting offers. Kairi and ZEROBASEONE’s Park Gun Wook were casted as the main leads in this drama in early 2024 alongside Park Jihu and Choi Hyunwook.
