also, as public services funded by taxes, if we don't use up all of our budget by the end of the fiscal year? governments do that thing where they go "oh, well, since you didn't use all that money, you must not need it. here's less money this year." but if we use up all that money? we can say "hey look at how many people are using our stuff! we need more moneys so we can expand what we can give them!" and we sometimes get more money. but at the very least, we get the same amount of money as we had last year.

and unfortunately, it's a system where if people don't use one service, we can't move that extra money somewhere else. our budgets are pretty strict. if something has been earmarked for digital services, it can only be used on digital services. we can't use any leftover from libby to spend on storytimes, for example. at the beginning of every year we have to decide how much money to allot to each thing, and that's the exact amount you have for that service. if you don't use it all up, you have less money for that service next year and have to work on a swiftly tightening budget. or, worse, a cut of the entire service. one library i worked at had to cut all of our research databases because they weren't being used enough, so those students who DID need research access could no longer get it.

so anyway, use our stuff so we can keep having the money to offer all that and more <3

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.

It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).

Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.

One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.

anyway i'm gonna info dump for a second about these two. They started out as not so subtle recolors of Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle main characters but with a much more serious story line, and now i'm trying to define them a bit more

anyway, basic gist: this is Demon King Polaris and Princess Snapdragon.

Snapdragon is the princess of the human kingdom Amaranth. She grew up somewhat neglected as her parents were busy and distant people who were slightly disappointed they never were able to have a son. Mostly she spent time with her childhood friend Dain, a squire from a noble family. Dain was prophecized to become a great hero of Amaranth, and so there was always the sense that he and Snapdragon would have a political marriage, which at the time Snapdragon was fine with; she wasn't attracted to Dain but as a princess she knew she could do worse than marry a friend, who, she believed, would at the very least respect her boundaries.

Anyway, in the meantime, Amaranth started having bad relations with the Demon Kingdom. Everything had always been tense between the two of them anyway, but they were, for the most part, under peace treaties. But then the current king refused to come to the latest peace summit to renegotiate treaties, and invaded some Demon Kingdom lands under false pretenses which were an excuse to just take some of their more fertile border lands.

Polaris, only recently having ascended the throne, ends up deciding to take drastic action in order to get his lands back and save the his people who have since been taken hostage, without resorting to straight up warfare - he's gonna kidnap the princess.

Meanwhile, now that Snapdragon and her friends are older, Dain has started to become very....discomforting. Snapdragon thought they were on the same page about their feelings for each other, but it seemed that Dain actually did have feelings for her, and was mad that they weren't reciprocated.

Slight trigger warning here, but he starts to get very handsy with her, and since they're pretty much engaged, Snapdragon doesn't have much recourse, plus she finds that her still distant parents don't even believe her when she tells them what Dain has been doing.

So one night, when she's escaped Dain's ever increasing bold behavior towards her and locked herself in her room, that's when Polaris appears on her balcony.

And feeling scared and alone, Snapdragon, automatically reaches out for help, which surprises Polaris. He sweeps her away with him to his castle, where of course as a political hostage she is going to be treated very well, while Polaris starts to suspect that something more was going on with Snapdragon back at the castle.

Anyway, yes they fall in love :) they're very soft and gentle and Polaris in particular is very in tune with Snapdragon's needs and when she gets scared so he always gives her a lot of space even before he knows what happened with her and Dain, which makes Snapdragon end up feeling safer and more at home at the demon castle than she did at home.
