The rivers that surrounded the city were basically sewers.
Tumblr media
That's why we do water-sportivism. That single sport turned those waters clean, it transformed the polluted rivers into vibrant, thriving ecosystems once again.
Because I was new to the city, they explained the concept of "water-sportivism," a novel approach that combined recreational activities with environmental restoration efforts. "Imagine kayakers and paddleboarders coming together as eco-warriors," they continued. "They not only enjoy the rivers but actively work to clean them. It's a sport that not only rejuvenates the waters but also fosters a sense of community and environmental stewardship."
I heard scientists are regrowing coral by reproducing the sounds of corals when populated by fish. The almost dead coral thinks it's very busy out there, and starts to grow. Scientists made a soundtrack of this, as if they were musicians!

a mathematician is selling a book of prompts (300 prompts to get you writing) on a yard sale in the south side. he says he was not able to write, even if he had 300 questions to pick from. i said, let's let math tell us what to write, and he said that we could pick the random method. we opened the book with the eyes closed, fanned the book, and let an open page reveal itself to us…
Tumblr media
Amidst the vibrant backdrop of the South Side's eclectic yard sale, I stumbled upon a mathematician, his wrinkled eyes peering through a pair of antique spectacles as he displayed a worn book titled "300 Prompts to Get You Writing."
He confessed that despite having an abundance of questions at his disposal, he had been unable to put pen to paper. His predicament intrigued me, and I proposed that we let mathematics itself guide our creative journey.
With a nod of agreement, we closed our eyes and reached for the book, its pages whispering secrets of inspiration. Fanning the book gently, I let my fingers guide me to a random page, and as if by mathematical fate, a prompt appeared before us: "Write about the dance of prime numbers."
In that moment, as we stood amidst the eclectic yard sale, the world of mathematics and creative writing converged.

lanternflies are species that we don't listen to. we have listened to others about having to kill them, but the lanternflies also have something to say:
Tumblr media
In the midst of a fierce debate about the invasive lanternfly species, I found myself pausing to listen, not to the cacophony of voices advocating for their eradication, but to the lanternflies themselves. In this solarpunk world, where biodiversity and coexistence were paramount, I discovered that these often-misunderstood insects had something important to communicate.
As I sat under the shade of a towering tree, I observed the lanternflies, their iridescent wings shimmering in the dappled sunlight. In their delicate, mesmerizing dance, they seemed to be sending a message, not through words, but through their very presence. They were a testament to the delicate balance of nature, a balance we had disrupted through our interventions.
The lanternflies' message was one of resilience, a plea for understanding. They reminded us that every species, no matter how alien or invasive they may seem, played a role in the intricate web of life. Their presence was a reflection of our own impact on the environment, a call to reevaluate our approach to coexistence. In this solarpunk world, where harmony with nature was the ultimate goal, the lanternflies had become unexpected ambassadors, urging us to listen and learn, rather than rush to judgment.

An enchanting ritual had taken root, where urban explorers like me sought out hidden treasures in the lush parks that adorned our metropolis.
Tumblr media
"We roamed among the towering vertical gardens and solar-panelled pathways, armed with portable scanners capable of unraveling the personal stories concealed within discarded objects. Our pursuit was a blend of curiosity and environmental consciousness, a modern manifestation of the ancient tradition of scavenger hunts.
As I wandered through the park one sunny morning, I stumbled upon a tarnished keychain shaped like a dragon. I scanned it with my handheld device and uncovered a story of an artist who had once created intricate sculptures of mythical creatures. The dragon had been a prototype, a symbol of his unyielding passion for creativity that had eventually led him to found a thriving art collective in our city.
Another day, beneath the canopy of a vertical forest, I discovered a weathered journal. Scanning its pages, I was transported to the daily musings of a poet who had frequented this very park, finding solace and inspiration in its green embrace. The verses painted vivid pictures of changing seasons and fleeting moments of serenity amidst the urban chaos.
These found objects were like fragments of our city's collective memory, hidden stories waiting to be uncovered. With each discovery, I not only unearthed tales of the past but also forged a deeper connection with the city and its inhabitants."

In one of the hearts of the city; aroma of freshly baked bread; a corner bakery.
Tumblr media
Luck and curiosity are our guides. I will introduce you to seven people that I met in Pittsburgh (one for each person waiting in front of us).
First there was my ex-husband (a street performer at a summer festival); then my ex-baker (now an urban beekeeper); my realtor (met at a local art gallery opening); my health insurance agent (at a shared bench on a riverside trail); my neighbor with the glasses (overheard a conversation about the city's history outside a coffee shop); the person I adopted my dog from (met during an unplanned stop on a winter walk); and this baker (looking and looking for a new baker). I met everyone by chance, all of them connected to a walk in the city.
