SUBLIME CINEMA #95 - ANTONIONI’S RED DESERT
Antonioni was fixated throughout his career on the modern world’s effect on human nature and the environment, presenting characters who seem at times both helpless and heroic in the face of a dominating industrial encroachment. There is little nostalgia for the ‘time before’, only a frank confrontation with what he saw happening around him. He framed his characters (and often his muse Monica Vitti) against soulless expanses of industrial and post-industrial landscape - most strikingly in Red Desert - still finding an ethereal beauty within it.

Some of the above comparisons probably don’t make sense without providing the context of the scenes of the Antonioni’s films, but here it is. I think it’s amazing how both artists put people against scenery in a very similar way, where the landscapes are often alien, terrifying, and otherworldly.
