Yeah, some of these authors have terrorized their fandoms, others seem basically harmless, just a little confused and pretentious. I didn't make this post to cancel anyone, I made it to be a poll ranking the funniest/worst quotes by authors re: the legality of fic. Genuinely, it's great that he's never harassed anyone with C&Ds. "wild and wanton misappropriation of copyrighted material" is still a hilarious turn of phrase.

If an author went after a legitimate fanfic (as in, not plagiarized or otherwise against the aforementioned TOS) the OTW would be able to back them up. That's kind of what their legal defense fund is for.

I'm for "no kind of writing should be illegal" in 99% of cases, but if something is being paid for by the government, they should be legally required to disclose this fact upfront, in no uncertain terms.

That is my one hard line.
