this is weirdly insightful

I low-key love the fact that sci-fi has so conditioned us to expect to be hanging out with a bunch of cool space aliens, that legitimate, actual scientists keep proposing the most bizarre, three-blunts-into-the-rotation "theories" to explain the fact we're not.

Some of my favourites include:

Zoo Theory: What if there are loads of aliens out there, but they're not talking to us because of the Prime Directive from Star Trek? (Or because they're doing experiments on us???)

Dark Forest Theory: What if there are loads of aliens out there, but they all hate us and each other so they're all just waiting with a shotgun pointed at the door, ready to open fire on anything that moves?

Planetarium Theory: What if there's at least one alien with mastery over light and matter that's just making it seem to us that the universe is empty to us as, like, a joke?

Berserker Theory: What if there were loads of aliens, but one of them made infinite killer robots that murdered everyone and are coming for us next?!!

Like, the universe is at least 13,700,000,000 years old and 46,000,000,000 light years big. We have had the ability to transmit and receive signals for, what, 100 years, and our signals have so far travelled 200 light years?

The fact is biological life almost certainly has, does, or will develop elsewhere in the universe, and it's not impossible that a tiny amount of it has, does, or will develop in a way that we would understand as "intelligent". But, like, we're realistically never going to know because of the scale of the things involved.

So I'm proposing my own hypothesis. I call it the "Fool in a Field" hypothesis. It goes like this:

Humanity is a guy standing in the middle of a field at midnight. It's pitch black, he can't move, and he's been standing there for ages. He's just had the thought to swing his arms. He swings one of his arms, once, and does not hit another person. "Oh no!" He says. "Robots have killed them all!"

unpopular opinion: personally not a huge fan of the dark artifices series as idk it just isn't great imo

however it will always like this book and i could never hate it. partly because i love the shadowhunter series so much and it was the reason for me really discovering what books i like. but partly because it was the first time i cried whilst reading.

tavy's reaction to livvy's death just broke something inside of me. now i don't remember the exact quote but it was something along the lines of "can't we bring her back" and then someone (maybe helen?) was like "oh no baby it doesn't work like that" and that just did something for me.

that's probably why i could never truly dislike this series <3

Today I am overanalyzing the early The Last Hours official art to see what might have been changed. Tomorrow? Maybe I'll finally get around to finishing reading it

This piece of art right here is, I believe the first appearance of many of the characters, from what I can see in the comments of this page, and I am fairly certain that certain changes were made and personalities were moved around.

Ok. So. At the very bottom in the boat you can see Herongraystairs having a nice time. Good for them.

Standing by the shore you can see a woman I am fairly certain is Tatiana. The dress, made in a style more appropriate for the 1870s than for the Edwardian era confirms it.

In front of her are who I believe to be the prototype Lightwood-Collins children. I believe the figure in the suit is Thomas, even if he is considerably smaller than what we know canon Thomas is, but Thomas's growth spurt was a relative late addition to the lore, iirc. In the early stages of planning, it is possible that his sickliness might have played more of a role. The two girls in front of him are probably Eugenia and Barbara. One of them seems to have black hair, it is possible that they inherited Sophie's darker hair.

Next to them is one of the details that caught my eye the most, the redheaded man and the boy who we know is Christopher. His design remained more consistent than others. Prototype Charles's body language just strikes me as more relaxed than end product Charles's, something about his languid pose, sitting on the grass. Christopher seems to have a more serious manner, or maybe it is him being sort of spacey but looking like he is serious??

But.

The fact that they're sitting together and that you can see the blond man at the far left, who we know is prototype Alastair, is looking at them makes me believe Alastair/Charles/Christopher might have been the original love triangle. Which is absolutely insane and maybe I am seeing shrimp colors but the way that they are accomodated in this introductory piece, where we first got names for the faces, all of them in quick succession, makes me pretty confident in that they might have been connected. Add to this that Thomas is nowhere to be seen in the original batch of main characters...

Front and center we have James and Matthew/Colin (it's heard to say whether Colin had already been dropped by this point), while we can see Lucie and prototype Cordelia gossiping. James and Lucie are recognizable, they already had a canon design by this point from what I gathered, as I believe their tarot card had already been released, according to the comments I saw on the page linked above.

The Blades in the Shadowhunter tarot cards are the Suit of Swords, and according to Google, this is what the Four of Swords means:

UPRIGHT: Rest, relaxation, meditation, contemplation, recuperation REVERSED: Exhaustion, burn-out, deep contemplation, stagnation

When ascending this card can mean going into a cocoon like a butterfly, opening up your third eye. Getting in touch with your purpose in life. It is mostly associated with a peaceful, still place. It reflects withdrawal, getting away and shifting the focus inwardly so that recovery and healing can take place.

Behind James and Matthew you can see Grace and Jesse. Something I think is very interesting is that in most of the art released around this time where Jesse featured he was almost always shown laying down in Grace's lap. Perhaps as symbolism of him being dead?

Behind the blond, prototype Alastair we can see a woman and a child. I believe this might be a prototype of Anna and Alexander. I had originally thought that the man with the speculated Lightwood-Collins sisters was Anna, but then this left the spot vacant. I remember seeing some people back in the day say that this might be Cecily, but Cecily would have no reason to be featured in the art, so I am fairly certain that this is Anna taking Alexander for a walk.

So, and this is just my speculation on who each person might be, from left to right:

Alastair (blond man), Alexander (little boy), Anna (woman in a dress), Lucie, Cordelia (red headed white girl), Matthew (maybe Colin), Jesse and Grace, James, Charles (red headed man), Herongraystairs, Christopher, Thomas, Eugenia and Barbara, and Tatiana.

Bringing back this introductory piece, there are some things that caught my eye. It seems that Will was originally meant to encourage an Alastair/Lucie match, while Alastair was probably in some love triangle with Charles and Christopher, which is still so absolutely wild I know there's an alternative universe where I am reading a 30 page google doc analizying their relationship. It also seems that Alastair originally had Cortana? While Grace had some sort of daggers/sabers. Every other character seems to have retained the attributes originally given to them; Charles with the book of law, Lucie with the typewriter, James with the gun, etc etc. It seems that by this point Anna may have already made the switch to a more masc presentaton.

The first image was published on May 6, 2013. The introductory piece was published on February 23, 2014. The Midnight Heir came out on November, 2014; by this point the only two characterizations we have are Grace and James (as a drunk lmaooo funniest way to introdice a character). Then, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy was formally published on November, 2016, which makes me believe that whatever significant changes happened to the plot and/or characters occured around this time.

There's no conclussion here, really, I just fell down a rabbit hole. I think this would make for a pretty interesting au though. Prototype characters meeting the final version save me... Prototype characters... Save me prototype characters
