Collection Spotlight: Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - Cherry Bomb (12" Single, Red vinyl; 1985)
The original Runaways' version of Cherry Bomb is one of my favorite songs of all time! My mom and I even have matching cherry bomb tattoos on our shoulders. I am more of a Cherie Currie girl, while my mom loves Joan Jett (I do too though!).
So, when I saw a 12" inch red single for this song on eBay, I just had to have it! It is one of the few times that I was checking eBay every few minutes to ensure I was the top bidder. Most of the time, I just put in my top bid and let it ride - but not this time! Luckily, I won without having to turn out my pockets too much. It is absolutely gorgeous!

Album Review of the Week: Smash Mouth - Fush Yu Mang (1997)
Fush Yu Mang is Smash Mouth's debut album and it ended up going double platinum! Not bad. Their sound is inspired by punk rock, ska rock, reggae and speed metal.
We open with Flo, a fast paced ska track that sounds very mid-90s in a great way! Beer Goggles continues in the same tone, just with a bit more rock than ska and a touch more melody. I really enjoy the cadence during the chant of "I want someone anyone". They say 'anyone' in an interesting way!
Next, we have Walkin' On the Sun which is certainly the most recognizable song on this album and my favorite by far! It has such an iconic 90s sound, I absolutely love it! The instrumentals are really fun and have a unique sound to go along with the bouncy melody. This is one of those tracks that hides a depressing subject with a bouncy melody. It was inspired by the unrest in L.A. after Rodney King was brutalized by police. They thought, we may as well be walking around with the planet on fire the way things are going.
Let's Rock goes back and forth at a breakneck speed between reggae and (I think) that speed metal influence. It is quite confusing to listen to! Although it sounds as though they definitely had fun with it, can't fault them for that!
Heave-Ho is a song that any young musician can relate to, I am sure. It is detailing a "whiny" neighbor that complained about the noise they were making so the landlord raised their rent! The lyrics are pretty funny and it is a solid-sounding rock track!
The Fonz is a solid rock track as well, but compared to what we have heard so far it is actually kind of boring. Just your standard rock instrumentation with the tiniest bit of ska in there every so often.
Pet Names brings back the personality with some manic vocals! The lyrics are an interesting take on the demise of a relationship, I really appreciate their songwriting. I like it when people write outside the box. Sure, most songs are about relationships, but this is a rare one that has a unique take that leaves me amused.
Padrino has a little Latin rock influence along with the fast-paced ska. I love the chorus with the chant of "Padreeenooo". They also reference Al Pacino in the chorus, who had inspired the album name. It is a reference to his slurred delivery of "F*ck you man" in Scarface.
Nervous in the Alley starts with the kind of guitar riff that scratches my brain, I don't know enough to name the technical sound - if a pedal creates it or what - but it is my favorite way for a guitar to sound. Other than that, it is a relatively standard track given its neighbors. Fast lyrics, ska beats.
Disconnect the Dots goes super ska. At this point in the album, it is starting to become background noise for me - meaning that the excitement is dwindling and things are starting to sound the same.
Push brings me back in a little bit. This is more of a standard rock sound again, but still unique enough to appreciate their talents.
Why Can't We Be Friends is a cover of the 70s song from War. It is fun at first, but become repetitive really quickly and just keeps going after it wears out its welcome! This one is very nostalgic for me because it was featured on the Lizzie McGuire TV soundtrack.
Overall, most songs are very entertaining and highly energetic. I can definitely see young guys going gaga for this at the time!
