The sakura blossoms have already begun to fall in Tokyo. Probably this weekend may be the last chance to see Somei Yoshino sakura but there are other varieties of cherry blossoms still blooming. #sakura #sakuratokyo #japancherryblossoms https://www.instagram.com/p/CqewdMQL7Do/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Iida city has stunning ancient edo-higan cherry trees and I think just going to see them is worth the visit. This throwback is a weeping cherry tree at Zosenji Temple in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture. The tree is estimated to be 300 years old, 18m tall, and 4m trunk circumference. This photo is during the day, but I will post later how it looks like at night. #iida #cherryblossomsnagano #naganocherryblossoms #sakurajapan #sakuratokyo #japancherryblossom https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp64ujYL0l-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The cherry blossom forecast has been announced today and Tokyo will start to bloom on March 18 and full bloom on March 25. Today I am putting up an old photo of Shinjuku Gyoen Park at night. This is a great place to go to see the cherry blossoms. #cherryblossom #sakura #tokyosakura #japansakura https://www.instagram.com/p/CpYro2nSk0Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tsuru no Mai Bridge (Aomori prefecture) is a 3 arched wooden bridge made of Aomori cypress. The bridge crosses over Tsugaru Fujimi Lake and it is the longest wooden bridge in Japan. Since the snow was so deep, we couldn't get to close but in the warmer months you can take stunning photos of the bridge and Mt. Iwaki in the background. #tsurunomaihashi #tsurunomaibridge #aomori #aomoriprefecture #woodbridge #snowjapan https://www.instagram.com/p/CocSMgUPFyl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taking a walk through Morioka city and you can see the former Morioka Bank. Doesn't it remind you of another building? It reminded me of the Marunouchi side of Tokyo station. Designed by the same architect, Tatsuno Kingo, who also designed the Bank of Japan. #morioka #moriokacity #ruraljapan #iwatebankredbrickhouse #iwatebank #visitjapan https://www.instagram.com/p/CoOHAJGv1V8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

An otoshi (お通し)of Kibinago (silver-stripe-round-herring) cooked over charcoal. Otoshi refers to a simple dish served at izakaya (tavern) to snack on until the item you ordered is served. It came to be called "otoshi" because it means "conveying the customer's order to the kitchen". You can say that otoshi is a mandatory appetizer which is used as a per head table charge. So don’t be surprised if your tab is higher than expected. It is probably the cost of the otoshi added to your tab. It is usually inexpensive and allows you to enjoy a kind of “pre- tasting” of food on the menu, and it has become a commonplace service in izakaya. #izakaya #izakayas #IzakayaFood #otoshi #japanculture #japancultureexperience https://www.instagram.com/p/CntJoPgL9Fk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hatsumode-visiting a shrine or temple for the first time of a new year. If you have been watching the telly, you will see crowds of people going for prayer on the three days of January 1st to the 3rd. However, it is recommended to visit the shrine before the "Matsu no uchi" 松の内 period is over. Matsu no uchi is the period during which pine tree ornaments made for new year’s are displayed as guides for the god who bring happiness and good harvest every new year to come to each house without getting lost. The Matsu no uchi period differs between Kanto (where Tokyo is) and Kansai (where Kyoto is located), and many places have it from January 1st to the 7th in the Kanto region and January 1st to the 15th in the Kansai region. When Matsu no uchi period is over, god of the incoming year has arrived and the New Year's is over. #2023 #japanesetradition #happynewyear2023 #newyeardecoration https://www.instagram.com/p/CnEkR-uPKmP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
