While upset about what she had read online about herself, Stevie Rae tweeted how unhappy she was — she even mentioned what had been said just to show she had reason to be upset. In reply to her series of tweets, Flannery — the boy who she has been crushing on — replied to her. She was able to tell that he genuinely wanted to make her happy, which had quickly brought her mood up a little bit. However, she was still bothered by the rude comment, and changed the back and forth tweeting, to texting the boy. That’s when he invited her to Dairy Queen where she would receive some ice cream and good company. Of course, the girl agreed to see the boy, not wanting to miss the chance to hang out with him before the big game. So, not too long after the invite, the girl grabbed her car keys and went on her way. She wasn’t dressed in anything special to go visit the boy. She was in a pair of medium blue colored skinny jeans, a zip up hoodie, and her hair was half up half down with a cat ear accessory in her hair. Stevie Rae had a bit of a strange obsession with the cat ears, thanks to a recent photo shoot she did with Casey.
The drive wasn’t long before she made it to Flannery’s place of work and she quickly made her way inside to see the boy. The door swung open, and the second she looked up there he was. The brunette thought he was so cute. Nicely colored blonde hair, the cutest smile, and he was taller than her but not too tall. He had the perfect body in her opinion as well. Not stick skinny, and certainly not fat — he was that perfect weight and had just enough muscle. Walking up to the counter, she smiled at him — forgetting she was upset for a moment — and pushed the hair that was hanging down behind her shoulder. “Hey,” she began, not really sure what to say at this point. She never really knew what to say around him, he made her nervous. Not that he was intimidating, rather that she didn’t want to look like a fool in front of him. Although, she was pretty sure that no matter how she acted she would embarrass herself. Stevie Rae wasn’t the most smooth when it came to socializing, never mind socializing with a cute boy. “are you, uh, excited for the big game?” She asked, trying to start up a conversation. She knew he had invited her for ice cream to try to cheer up her mood, but she didn’t want to go into the place talking about herself or the situation. In fact, she didn’t really want to talk about it at all — she didn’t even want to think about it. She just wanted to have a fun conversation with the boy like she usually would to keep her mind off of things, this way, at least for a little while, she’ll be able to forget how bad things actually are.
It was another one of the slower shifts at the local Dairy Queen Flannery worked minimum wage at — not that there were rush hours often, there weren't much children around town with enough money to frequent the place. The boy was surely pumped for that night's game, and was giddy to simply get out and run some drills or practise some passes — serving someone would surely help him get in the mood of tonight, he was certain. But no one came, and thirty minutes into his shift, Flannery decided to do what he does on these slower days, open his phone and check his social media accounts — especially that special on for Lula, Whisper. Truth be told, the young man wasn't exactly the biggest troublemaker, nor was he the best drama-stirrer — he only enjoyed scrolling through and keeping himself informed on the fights and happenings around Rosemary Grove. Looking up momentarily while the page loaded, Flannery made sure there were no customers around that he had to attend to, and that his boss wasn't anywhere around — he couldn't risk losing his job, not with his grandmother's condition now.
Flannery's week had been alright. Boring, but fine — just like most weeks since the end of summer. Nothing special, nothing new, and everything was tedious — a repeat of school and work every single day. The only thing that excited him were the daily football drills, sadly. With their losing streak, though, he wondered if that would continue, though, for his spot was never secure, even as team captain. Being the football captain and quarterback, most would think he was popular, but it was less cliché at Rosemary Grove — it wasn't exactly traditional, the way Flannery distanced himself from the QB life, girls and all. He refused to go to most parties, and wouldn't budge unless forced to do so — and even then, he'd always be away from the main crowd, finding himself near the corners of the room, most likely on his phone.  But that was all before this year, his senior year. Flannery wanted change — something fresh over the last three years, and to do that, he started talking to more people — which included Stevie Rae, a new student at the school.
As he scrolled through Whisper, Flannery looked past most gossip material, never having much interest in quarrels, but one whisper stood out from the rest — one about Stevie Rae. Over the past weeks, he had gotten to know the other better, and begun to trust her. She was just a really likable person, and she had a pretty cute face, too, the boy thought. Not letting go of what the whispers said — Flannery went on Twitter, where he came across Stevie Rae's sad tweets, which he responded to in good nature. Soon, it became much more than just the whispers, and Flannery was full-on texting the girl, helping her cheer up — recklessly inviting her to Dairy Queen for the time being.
When she first came in the door, Flannery didn't notice her petite frame — he was preoccupied with another one of his silly phone games. His head was tilted forward, and for a moment, the two simply stood in front of each other, not doing anything. It took Flannery about thirty seconds to come to the realization that the girl was standing in front of him, and being the fool he was, he pocketed his phone and began mumbling quite incoherently, "Hey, uh, I'm sorry, didn't see you there. You want anything?" However, Flannery could sense that Stevie Rae couldn't comprehend and proceeded to repeat his statement — clearing his throat beforehand and placing his hand through his dyed blonde hair. "Hey, uh, Stevie Rae. How's it going?" Realizing that the girl had asked him a question, Flannery went on to answer it, saying, "Yeah, I guess. Pretty pumped for tonight, getting a head start in the beginning of the season and all. Hey — did you want to get anything?"
a cheering up -- { flannery & stevie rae }
If there was an award for the worst week ever, Stevie Rae would be nominated and most likely take home the prize. First, school started — it’s not just another year, it’s senior year. Senior year with a bunch of new people in a new town. It was senior year that felt like freshmen year, and for the seniors that didn’t meet her yet, that’s probably what they thought she was. Stevie Rae was no bigger than a freshmen. The petite girl was a merely five foot one inch, and weighed no more than one hundred and fifteen pounds. She believed she still had a baby face, but she doesn’t like putting on a shit ton of make up to make herself look older. It’s unnecessary. A simple natural look with a winged out eyeliner was more than enough, and that’s all she did. Second, she had a really bad day with her depression this week. Having a bad day with depression for the girl is hard enough, but on top of it everything seemed to go wrong. Her friends begged her to hang out. Whilst out, she smoked with her friends like she did sometimes and had a bad trip — which was a first for the girl. And, after she left early because she just wanted to lay down in her own bed, she was caught walking in the middle of a thunderstorm and was stuck out there for quite some time because she was locked out of her house. The last thing that made this a terrible week, was that stupid Whisper App. As she was checking through the recent posts, she saw a whisper that read “Stevie Rae just wants attention. every time she talks, i feel like gouging out my eyeballs.” What a great thing for a depressed, insecure girl to read on a Friday night before heading out to take pictures for a football game.

Of course I think that way, Kenley — you girls are amazing out there. If I were a spectator, I'd be looking forward to the cheer routine and not the game, in all honesty. I've seen glimpses and a bit of things here and there, but no, not the whole routine yet, if that's what you meant.
Tumblr media
No, it’s not that. I’ve always watched football, my dad always made a show of bringing my whole family to every possible game. I’m glad you think so, that’s kind of our objective. Oh yeah, Luna and I have been working the girls really hard this summer, but I think it’s our best routine yet. Did you get a chance to see us yesterday?

Come on, I'm sure there's tons of people out there who think the same thing — you're cool, you know? I mean, I'm obviously biased because you're taking pictures of me, so I definitely think that's neat — and I work at the ice cream place, so again I'm not very objective, you see? But hey, who cares — we're only teenagers, no one cares about our hobbies anyway. You know — I might be the quarterback, but I'm not even close to the best — let alone the star player. That'd be someone actually good at football, unlike me, you know. We have practise almost everyday, really, but mostly just conditioning and the boring stuff — our next real drill's on Monday, early in the morning, about 6 AM. Think you can make it?
Tumblr media
Sometimes I feel like you’re the only person who thinks so, so thank you for that — it means a lot more than you probably think.I also think that you’re the only person who believes that taking pictures of sweaty football players and ice cream is a cool hobby. Maybe that’s because you are a football player, and you work at an ice cream shop. Not that interesting? You’re like the star player— everything is on account of you, I feel. Like, I’m pretty sure you’re the one who calls the shots — that’s both interesting and cool. Alright, alright, Flannery, you don’t have to ask me twice. We can watch it together. It’ll be fun! I will uphold the promise, don’t worry. When’s the next practice? You better come to the sidelines every once in awhile because I’d need some company.

Stevie Rae: Out of your pocket? Oh, wow, thank you.
Stevie Rae: But, you don't have to pay for me
Flannery: No, it's fine — my treat, you know?

C'mon, Stevie Rae, don't put yourself down — you're pretty amazing, you know? You really should know that, 'cause no one tells you that often enough, in my opinion. As for your hobbies — I believe that they're quite intriguing. You see, you take pictures of sweaty football players during conditioning and you like ice cream? Being QB1's not even that interesting, let's be real here. I mean, if you say so — then I'll watch it sometime, preferably with the recommender, though, 'cause you think so highly of it and all. You'll definitely have to uphold your promises, okay? And I'll make sure you do, Stevie Rae.
Tumblr media
Well, you deserve it. You’re, like, a really great guy and someone has to let you know that. I’m not so sure about me being cool. I don’t do anything that’s even remotely interesting, and, well, I’m no QB1. It’s a really great movie, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Casey has mentioned it to you. I think that’s the movie we’ll have to watch because you really need to experience it. I like popcorn and pizza, and a day with you sounds like fun, so it’s more like we’d definitely have fun. Yes, yes, it’s a promise! I promise that I keep my promises, and if I don’t you can hate me forever if you must.

That's true, it's a hell lot of choices — more than anything I've had to make on my own, I'm pretty sure. I'm pretty confused too, with so many majors and campuses — it's a whirlwind of confusion I don't understand. Ah, yes, I'm sure Bolt likes that phrase, 'cheering buddy', make sure you say that to him, alright? Well, if you're sure, then so am I! Looks like Bolt's in amazing hands now — see you soon.
Tumblr media
Psychology? I’ve never actually considered that. I’m still pretty undecided about college, where to go, what to study… It’s just a lot of choices to make, you know? But thanks for the suggestion Flannery, I’ll definitely look into it. Yes! Cheering buddy! It’s definitely a title of sorts, and I’m sure Bolt will live up to it. Oh, well, don’t worry, I’m sure I can handle him. I’ll just hold onto his leash really tightly and try to comfort him if you fall. Of course I’m still in — seeing a game and getting to hang out with a dog sounds like the perfect evening to me. And alright, I’ll text you when I get down there.

He is, yes. Thanks, too, Beau — you've been working real hard this year, you know?
Tumblr media
We’ve got your back QB, don’t sweat it. He’s a piece of work but he’s a good guy and a good player.

Stevie Rae: Free ice cream? Well, now I have to come visit.
Stevie Rae: You wont get in trouble for giving me ice cream right? because I have money.
Flannery: I won't, don't worry, it comes outta my pocket.

I'll do that, definitely — hey, you spit out some pretty neat advice, you should major in psychology maybe, Marisol. That's good then, real good. I'd love for Bolt to watch the first match of the season — even better if he's with you. Cheering buddy? I like the sound of that — sounds like a title or something. They sure are — especially Bolt. He gets a bit angry at times, though, when we lose or when I fall down — so beware. Thought I'd warn you, I guess. But you're still in, are you? I'll hand him over to you when you reach the field — text me.
Tumblr media
Well, just try not to focus on it too much, and take everything you read there with a grain of salt — it’s just mindless gossip and it doesn’t dictate anything about you or how you’ll play tonight. Bolt? Well, I can’t see why they wouldn’t allow dogs in the stadium, and I’ve never read a rule against it so I’m sure they do. So I’d be happy to hold onto him for you during the game. He can be my little cheering buddy! And with a dog cheering you on, I’m really not sure what could go wrong; they are the most supportive animals — and the cutest, in my opinion at least. Do you want me to stop by and pick him up before the game?

Obviously, I know. But I'm really counting on you guys to help me out here, you know. Well, that's good then, I'm glad to hear that. Sawyer — that boy, he's a great member, both on and off the field, you feel?
Tumblr media
You’re the captain Flannery, not the coach. Don’t worry, as far as you’re concerned I’ve done what i need to do! And well, everyone I’ve talked to have been hard at work with their conditioning. Even Sawyer, although some of the times him and I were out he was ridiculously hungover.

Yeah, that app — I really don't know, I shouldn't pay much attention to it, but I do, for some odd reason. I guess that's true, we're all meaner under a mask, just 'cause we don't have consequences to deal with. I mean, I try not to care, but I can't help but look at the pages sometimes, Marisol. You know, I shouldn't care, really. I've got faith in the team after all — and still some more conditioning to do. Hey — I'd love to take Bolt to the game tonight, but no one's there to keep him on a leash, maybe you can do that? Do they still allow dogs in stadiums, though?
Tumblr media
Whisper? I downloaded the app because Caleb convinced me to but I have yet to actually go on it, it just doesn’t seem all too worthwhile… People have been saying things? Well, it’s an anonymous app, everyone is crueler when they can hide behind a mask, without the fear of being caught. I wouldn’t put too much stock into it, Flannery — I’m sure it’s just rumors. And besides, focusing on it will prevent you from focusing on the game tonight. Just try to put it out of your head, because I can assure you you definitely should be the quarterback. How about we talk about something happier?

Wow, I'm getting really flattered now — thanks a ton, Stevie Rae. You're not too bad yourself — you're pretty funny and I like sticking around with you like stickers on paper, if that makes any sense. Come on, you're pretty cool yourself too — you gotta admit it. Edward Scissorhands, haven't watched that, I don't think. Casey's mentioned it once before though, I believe — so we should totally get together, have some popcorn and pizza, and maybe have some fun? Is that a promise I sense, Stevie Rae? Well, you better keep your promises, young lady.
Tumblr media
Well, to me, you are that cool. And, good, that gives me a reason to be happy because I would be sad if you didn’t stick around, to be honest. Like I said, you’re a cool guy— who wouldn’t want to be, uh, friends with someone so cool? Oh, yay, sounds like fun! I really like Edward Scissorhands— it’s one of my absolute favorite movies, and Clueless is really good too. You could be powerful if you wanted to be. Just got to show them who’s boss. Okay, okay. You’ll see me more often at the practices, I promise!
