Let us Prepare for TEF Together!
TEF Canada, Prepare For TEF Canada Exam, tef french
What is TEF?
How well do you think you know the French language? One of the many ways of proving your French language proficiency is by undertaking an exam called TEF. You might be wondering, now what is TEF and why is it important when it comes to French? Do not worry we have got all the answers you might possibly need.
Let us start by understanding what TEF actually stands for? TEF stands for Test d'evaluation Français. TEF is one of the many competitive benchmark tests built to assess an individual's skills in the French language. When we take into consideration TEF, precisely TEF Canada, it is a test that comes in handy during the immigration process or obtaining the Canadian PR. Since French is one of the two official languages of Canada, this test can be shown as proof of the applicant's linguistic knowledge of the language. An important federal organisation in Canada, IRCC, has recognized CLB Level 7 in TEF Canada for the purpose of linguistic qualification since 2002. It is deemed valid for the duration of 2 years.
Structure:
Now you must be wondering what TEF comprises? The structural component is discussed as follows:
There are majorly 4 categories that TEF consists which are-
1. Reading Comprehension / Compréhension écrite (CE) - With a given time limit of 60 minutes, this category consists within itself 50 questions given in an MCQ format, which comprise of a total of 300 points. In order to get a Canadian Language Benchmark 7 (CLB 7), the testee has to score minimum marks between 207-232. The testee has to read the test prescribed below and pick the best possible option out of the given.
2. Listening Comprehension/ Compréhension orale (CO) - Total of 60 questions to be attempted within 40 minutes of time period, with an absolute of 360 points assigned to it, this category attempts to appraise the listening abilities of the testee in the French language. In order to clarify for CLB Level 7, the testee has to score points between 249-279.
3. Writing Expression/ Production écrite (PE) - Allotting 60 minutes of time period to complete 2 topics to write on in the French language, this category consists of 450 points altogether. The sub-categorisation consists of Section A which is an 80 word article whereas Section B consists of 200 words. Taking 60 minutes to cover 2 topics consisting 450 points altogether this section measures the ability to write in the French language.
The two topics consist of Section A, which is an 80 word long article, and Section B where the testee has to justify and/or explain your viewpoint in a given situation in 200 words. Minimum of 310-346 points are required to get CLB 7.
4. Speaking Expression/ Production orale (PO) - This category offers 2 topics to be covered within a 15 minute time period consisting of an informal situation of convincing a friend in a made up situation along with a formal situation about enquiring and asking questions/queries and organising information. Out of the total of 450 points that this category is made of, it requires the testee to score 310-348 points minimum for CLB Level 7.
Since French grammar has its own set of specific rules, it is important to remember to thoroughly prepare the speaking and writing sections before attempting the paper.
Evaluation of scores:
We now know all about what TEF is and its structure, but how are the scores evaluated? When it comes to the immigration test, TEF Canada is evaluated according to CLB Levels, there are a total of 10 levels from 4-10. These levels measure proficiency according to the scores obtained and the level reached by the applicant.

When we consider both the national languages, English as well as French, there are 15 points granted in case of CLB level 4 or less in the English combined with a CLB level 7 in French, meanwhile, 30 points are granted in case of CLB Level 5 or more in English combined with a CLB Level 7 in French. When it comes to CLB 7 and more in English along with CLB 7 and more in French, the candidate gets upto 62 points in the Express Entry CRS Score. For applicants with a skill type 0 or A, Level 7 is required. To conclude, one can score upto 62-54 points based on the scores obtained in TEF.
Registration:
In order to register, you may contact the nearest Alliance Française centre that you wish to appear in. There also are multiple sites online to register on, while applying by filling the form provided and submitting required information. The applicants can pre-book their dates of the examination on those websites, and start preparing for the exam with us.
Results:
At last we come to results, during the results a certificate is issued in which the scores, the level of proficiency reached by the testee and lastly, skills in the French Language are described in a perzonalised manner. The results are sent via the mail or email to the testee within 4-6 weeks after it takes place. If a candidate wishes to take multiple tests, they can do so as long as the sessions have a minimum gap of 60 days.
TEF has been taken into consideration for years when it comes to testing the French language proficiency of any individual. It is a crucial test when it comes to Canada and its immigration.

IELTS VS CELPIP - Points About The Two Tests
Learn Online IELTS
One of the six choice measures for Canada super durable residency is language capability. Language capability tests are a superb method for exhibiting one’s capacity to find a place with others in this nation and to have the option to reside and fill in as the other residents do.
Scoring great will let specialists know that you have the requisite language skill to work in their country. While scoring inadequately will hinder you to mingle well in various professional fronts. The country is quite welcoming but with proving your language skills in these tests you are well placed in the Academic as well as personal scenario.
What are language proficiency tests?
Language proficiency tests are specifically designed to test areas of the language that the testee will need to get by in a foreign country. They do not test you on advanced components of grammar. Instead, they analyse the key application of the language and see how well you can manage yourselves in different walks of life, as you become the resident of this country and also prove to be a valuable asset for them. The testee is analysed for the four language competencies: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
What are the different kinds of language proficiency tests?
There are three test providers in Canada, two for English and one for French. The ones providing English proficiency tests are as follows:
1.       International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
2.       Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)
What is IELTS?
IELTS is a test provider that tests you on four language abilities- reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is a test that is accepted by several countries all over the world and is used for general immigration, student and work visas mainly.
The IELTS is not a challenging test, especially for Indian applicants as they have been speaking and using the language their entire lives. Going for classes is a good way to prepare for these exams, however getting familiar with the format of the tests and attempting a few mock exams is usually enough to get a good score.
The IELTS is scored on a band of 9 points. 6.5 points is a satisfactory score to aim for.
What is CELPIP?
CELPIP is not a generalised English test. It is meant to be used for the specific purposes of citizenship and immigration. There is no point in taking this test if you are applying for a student visa, or a work visa that does not involve a professional designation.
There are two kinds of CELPIP exams:
CELPIP General: This assesses your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. It is meant for permanent residence applications and is reviewed by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). You can also take this test for professional designation purposes.
CELPIP General LS: This test only measures your listening and speaking skills and is designed for citizenship applications and professional designations.
What are the differences between IELTS and CELPIP?
The major differences are as follows:
IELTS
CELPIP
The IELTS can be taken for a variety of visa processes, among which are study visas, work visas and permanent residency visas.
The CELPIP is only meant to be taken for permanent residency visas and citizenships.
Four types of language skills are tested here.
In the General LS version of this test, only listening and speaking skills are measured.
There are two versions, one is the IELTS General Training and the other is the IELTS Academic.
There are two versions, one is the CELPIP General and the other is the CELPIP General LS.
Key Components of IELTS
There are 4 sections, with 1 to 9 points assigned to each. You can score whole points or half points.
Listening section: There are 4 components with around 40 questions. This will take around 3 minutes.
Reading section: There are 3 components with 40 questions. This lasts for 60 minutes.
Writing section: There are two components. You are required to write an essay and a letter. This lasts for 60 minutes.
Speaking section: There are three components. You have to introduce yourself, deliver a speech and answer questions. This lasts for 11-14 minutes.
Key Components of CELPIP
There are 4 sections to this test, with a score of 1 to 12 for each section. This is a computer-based test. They are graded according to the Canadian Language Benchmark Levels (CBL).
Listening section: There are 7 components with 40-46 questions. This section lasts for 47-55 minutes.
Reading section: There are 4 components with 38-45 questions. This lasts for 55-60 minutes.
Writing section: There are only two components for this one. These consist of writing an email and responding to a survey. The writing section lasts for 53-60 minutes.
Speaking section: There are eight components to this test, with 8 questions. This lasts for 15-20 minutes.
CELPIP & IELTS band score required for Canada permanent residency.
Canada is now emerging as an ideal choice for immigrants, given the high quality of life offered there. While it is essential to have an IELTS for Canada PR application, the minimum score is different for every program.
Here’s the minimum requirement for each CBL Level:

Both of the tests are equally appropriate to be used for your immigration application, and choosing one over the other can be a matter of personal preference. IELTS is a good choice for the test-takers who prefer paper-based exams and separate face-to-face speaking components, or those applying from outside of Canada. However, based on the analysis above, CELPIP is a better choice for those who prefer a computer-based exam and are looking for a faster and less stressful test experience.
