|| Temple Series || Tamilnadu || Srivilliputhur || Vaidyanathar Temple || The temple dedicated to ‘God of healing’ || The temple dedicated to ‘God of healing’ Madavar Vilagam Vaidyanathar temple is a Shiva temple located in the village of Madavar Vilagam at Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. This temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Constructed during the 16th century in the Dravidian style of architecture, it had a five-tiered gateway tower dedicated to lord Shiva who is worshiped as Vaidyanathar "God of healing" and his consort Parvati as Sivakami. As per Hindu legend, this temple gets its name when Lord Shiva appeared for a staunch devotee in the form of her mother to help her in delivering her child. Also, to quench the lady in labour’s thirst, Shiva is believed to have split his toenail that resulted in a spring in the form of Siddhamritha tank. And that’s how the holy water of the Siddhamirtham tank in the temple complex is believed to have curative effects, and a holy dip here is believed to cure all diseases. As per local legend, the Nayak king Thirumalai Nayak suffered from a chronic stomach issue for which he stayed at Madavar Vilagam there for 48 days. He was completely cured and as a mark of his gratitude, he constructed the Natarajar hall as in Madurai Meenakshi temple. Showing his respect to the great lord that cured him, the king built drum halls all the way from this Shiva temple at Srivilliputhur to Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and his palace (present day 80km away) as he would take his midday meal only after hearing the drum sounds indicating the completion of mid day worship in the temple. The temple timing : 6 am - 12 pm and 4-7 pm on all days except during festival days when it is open all day. Knowing about the history and legend, we wanted to visit this temple. Unfortunately we reached around midday and we couldn’t see inside the temple, but what a marvelous gateway and the reflection of it in the tank adjacent to the temple. We had a magical time surrounded by nature and with the most incredible 200+ degrees of uninterrupted views. We relaxed and soaked in a lot of evening sun, had a romantic sunset picnic in the private garden of the villa and played with the doggies. We did what we most missed in Chennai - 8 plus hours of sound sleep and best of all afternoon naps. What more would one need on a relaxing holiday? The first picture you see is Bakers' House.. The house where the Baker family lived for four generations, along with 100 acres of land in Kumarakom, was sold to the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation #ktdc in 1982. Later, it was leased out to the #tajgroup that converted the bungalow into the first modern tourist resort in Kumarakom - the Taj Garden Retreat now known as @tajkumarakom The second and third picture are the rooms developed around the lagoon. Though renovated, the building still retains a rustic beauty and stands as a beautiful monument to the Baker family’s contributions to a land they created and developed.
